Asics Gel-Trabuco 14 G-TX Womans
Advantages: Comfortable with good stability and support
and forest trails a lot more than I ever enjoyed jogging round the streets or park. As this seems
to have been more successful at holding my interest I decided it was time to buy a pair of trail
running shoes rather than wearing whatever trainers happened to fall out the cupboard that
As my friend works in a running shop and with the promise of his staff discount I was persuaded
to go along and get some advice on the correct pair for my needs rather than my usual buy cheap
on the net and hope for the best policy. After a few tests involving running up and down the street
and on a treadmill, close examination of my old wrecked running trainers I was advised that I'm
slightly prone to over pronation as my foot tends to roll inward slightly as I run.
After being advised on what shoes I should consider I decided the Asics Trabuco were
the most comfortable and went for the Gore-tex version as thanks to the discount they were
only £10 more expensive than the standard pair.
The Trabuco are light and dark grey in colour with bright pink accents on the upper and sole.
As running shoes go these don't look too bad while I probably wouldn't wear them out casually
likewise I wouldn't be embarrassed if I nip to the shops after a run. Thankfully the Trabuco have
avoided the multicoloured clashing design overkill of many running shoes which look like a 3 year
old was let loose in Paintshop!
The Trabuco have a Gore-tex upper which means they are supposedly waterproof while
remaining breathable. I've since discovered this is pretty pointless as although the shoes are
really breathable and do keep the rain out if you run through wet grass or hit the odd puddle
obviously water goes in the top of the shoes so your feet get wet anyway although on the
plus side the shoes do dry out quickly.
The sole on the Trabuco is quite chunky with a trail specific wet grip sole to provide traction on
all surfaces you might find yourself running on off road. off road I find the sole works really well
with only occasional slipping on wet roots and stones. My usual off road running includes
everything from gravel tracks, muddy paths, grass and woodlands and the shoes cope well
in most situations. The shoes can be used running on the road as well as off road but the anti
slip sole is not a fan of the huge white lines our council insists on sticking at the bus and cycle lanes. Running along on the road due to the pavement being dug up found me doing a rather bad
impression of Torvill and Dean after sliding on the white cycle path marker lines in the rain.
These days it seems every pair of running shoes has multiple claims of technological wonders
that are going to make you run faster with more comfort and less injuries and fatigue and the
Trabuco are no different. The Trabuco have gel inserts in the forefoot and heel for maximum
comfort and shock absorption along with a rock plate in the sole to protect your foot from any
sharp objects on the trails. The shoes also have Asics high abrasion resistant rubber in critical
wear areas of the shoes to prevent the shoes falling apart on you. The dual density midsole
material is designed provide support and stability by correcting the degree and velocity of the
pronation while the plastic bridge arch support gives stability and strength to the shoe without
affecting the flexibility.
I'm not sure if any of the above have any real life effect but the Trabuco are extremely comfortable
to run in and I find they give good support and stability no matter what surface I'm running on. The
heel foam molds to fit your heel and the lacing system provides a secure and comfortable fit with
enough room in the toe area so your feet don't feel cramped and restricted.
I don't cover huge distances during my runs usually 3-6 miles so I can't comment on how they would
feel after several hours for anyone that does long distances but I've had no problems with sore
feet or pressure points during or after my runs. I've owned these for just over 8 weeks and they
are used around 4 times a week so far they are standing up well with no major signs of wear on
the uppers and only slight signs of wear on the soles.
The Trabuco 14 GTX cost me £70 with my friends staff discount and usually cost around £85 -£100
for this years models. Previous seasons shoes can be found online for as little as £50 from Ebay
or sports outlets such as Sport Direct depending on the size you require being in stock so it's
worth shopping around if you know these shoes are suitable for you.
Summary: Great trail running shoes
