After reading a host of cycling magazine reviews I opted to purchase a high end road bike from Partridge Cycles (only Cannondale dealership close by). Having purchased the bike and ridden it less than 2 miles the gears were playing up & then the chain snapped. I phoned the store immediately & took the bike in the same afternoon. I was told it was my fault for not being familiar with the gears & overloading them! (I've had similar bikes for the last 12 years which I have raced with no issues at all). As I had notified them immediately the problem occurred & had only ridden the bike for less than 10 minutes I asked for a refund (they didn't have anything similar to exchange) they refused point blank & pointed to their refund policy. I am currently in the process of taking them to court & will keep everyone informed of the outcome! Avoid, avoid, avoid!!!
Was in the market for a new bike this year so after doing some research I thought I'd pop into the shop and try some bikes out. Initially the welcome wasn't great, the staff that were about seemed more interested in talking among themselves, so I took it upon myself to browse the bikes that were available. One chap did come over not too long after and seemed interested in helping me as best he could. To be honest he wasn't the most knowledgeable chap I'd ever spoken to, in fact he was quite the opposite, but he readily admitted to this and said he would drag someone out of the workshop who knew high end mountain bikes a lot better than he did. Anyway this young lad came out and got chatting to me, before we even started talking to me about the bike I was after we were lost in conversation about anything and everything to do with bikes and local riding. This was the kind of service I was after; friendly and relaxed. Eventually narrowing it down to the right type of bike for my riding I took the bike for a quick test ride outside, unfortunately it was dark and the shop was shutting so we quickly wrapped up and went home.
Eventually I did manage to come back and spotted the same young lad that had helped before, before I even said anything to him he recognized me and came straight over telling me about some fantastic deal on the same bike I had tried out the previous time. Turns out that this bike is a factory seconds as he explained it and had a scratch on it so had knocked off the best part of 500 quid!
Anyway, cut to the chase! I bought the bike which was a fantastic deal, much cheaper than anywhere else (including the internet) and the service I received was brilliant! A couple of the staff did seem a tad miserable and uninterested but when I did get help it was brilliant! I am unsure of this lads name but he works in the workshop and does a lot of mountainbike races- highly recommended! Also I must express my appreciation to the older fellow who first approached me, he didn't know to much about bike but was as helpful as he could be!
After spending a once in a lifetime £2695 on a Road bike from Partridge Cycles I left very pleased with my purchase, although the owner had been rude to me while I was in there but I just put that down to him having a bad day as the man that sold me the bike was very helpful and not pushy at all, well just under 50 miles later and less than 4 weeks since I bought my bike happily riding along a nice flat road by Dartmouth Golf and Country Club
a spoke snapped in my back wheel so I stopped straight away and called a friend to pick me up, and then phoned Partridge cycles the next day to say what had happened and that was it okay to have the free service that came with the bike at the same time as they mended the wheel, yes that would be fine and they would only charge me £20 for truing the wheel as I had managed to get a new spoke as I was told they were hard to get hold of sometimes and to me to be charged for this seemed unfair so I will now spend my money elsewhere in future as I really did expect this to be done for free. BEST TO JUDGE A FIRM AFTER SOMETHING GOES WRONG AND HOW THEY DEAL WITH IT WELL 1 OUT OF 10 FROM ME .
I would strongly advise anyone who is considering spending any considerable sums of money at this store to use other retailers due to my own experience which has left me feeling very bitter detailed below. If you are in any doubt, please call the store and ask them about their refunds policy.
I bought a bike here for £1250 which was returned the next day due to an issue. To my dismay I was told that there was strictly a no refunds policy and I would be given a credit instead of a refund even though they were more than happy to take the bike back. Against my will I had to choose another bike which I didn't want to do. The bike was £200 cheaper and again I was told that I would have to take a credit and not be entitled to my money. I complained and spoke to the manager 4 times who advised (with attitude) that once the money is in their till, the money is no longer yours and belongs to them under all circumstance. I have a 5 week old child (who staff had seen) and £200 is a lot of money to me, I told them before I left that if they would refund, or even partially refund me I would walk away happy, but they were not concerned that a customer would leave the store feeling bitter. Considering I bought my bike here to support my local store rather than use the net, I left feeling very hard done by and have vowed never to buy from this store again and would urge others to do the same.
Did you know that other main online retailers will enclose a returns bag with your order allowing you to return items free of charge for a full refund?
Finally when I returned today to spend my unwanted credit I was given attitude from another member of staff for taking a picture of a cycle light with my phone.
I took my bike in to the store to ask for a nut to be drilled out which I had snapped off in the brake caliper of my bike. This is something I had done once before a few years back and the guys at partridge sorted it for me for a reasonable price so I thought I would go back there. I live 14 miles away from the store but traveled the distance because I was very pleased with the previous work they had done for me and I thought I could trust them
How very wrong I was.
I took my bike in on a Friday and asked the person behind the desk how much it was going to cost. He said to me that the replacement bolt would be a couple of quid and that the labour charge would be about £10. He also said that if it was going to cost any more than this that they would ring me first before doing the work.
I never received a phone call over the weekend so when I went to pick my bike up on the Sunday I assumed I would be paying just over £10 for the work which is what was agreed when I went in the shop on the Friday.
After being given my bike I was told that the charge was over £30! Three times more than the agreed price. When I queried the price I was told that there was nothing they could do and that if I didn't pay the money that they would keep my bike and that I would have to go back up later in the week to speak to someone else to query the price again. As it is almost a 30 mile round trip for me to visit the shop I reluctantly paid the money and left.
If I had known the price was going to be £30 I wouldn't of had the work done as I can buy a brand new brake caliper for that price.
So basically if you want an honest, trustworthy and helpful bike shop to take your bike to to have some work done. Then do not under any circumstances visit Partridge Cycles.
Ove the last 4 years we have bought at least 6 bikes for Partridge Cycles and they have been faultless. We've just had to swap out a road bike that my Son wasn't getting enough use of for a mountain bike, and it was done without any issues. We've also traded in bikes along the way - and it makes the whole process of buying and selling easy. Can't praise them enough.
Bought two very expensive bikes from Partridge, within a couple of months both bikes developed a problem the the Shimano gears, returned to the store with the bikes and you guessed it they didn't want to know. If you want poor customer service and a company that is only interested in taking your money and delivery poor quality sub-standard goods with absolutely no chance of them rectifying the problem then Partridge Cycles are your company. Stay well clear buyer beware!
I recently came into the store to look at bikes for myself to replace my 15 year old mountain bike aswell as getting a bike for my 8 year old son whose birthday is next week.
When i arrived i was greated by a staff member who was very helpful and asked if i needed any help and carried on browsing the store.
Although i initially came into the store with a view at buying a new full suspension bike, i was amazed at the range of bikes that were available although seemed to be a pain for the staff member to get a few out of the racking and manouver other bikes around. The staff members who served me were more than helpful and dealt with my questions well. The bikes are arranged well in their appropriate different styles etc but there is simply too many in the shop and the walkways are hard to navigate round and there were just too many to choose from.
After viewing the full suspension range i then ventured into the 'kids section' as shown by one of the staff. Again i was met with a confusion of bikes and again couldn`t see one bike to another properly! But im sure my son will be able to find a bright and colourful bike amongst the bikes they had available.
I put a deposit on a new full suspension bike which i will pick up when i bring my son in to choose his. All in all a good experience apart from the amount of bikes which was at times confusing but the staff did help with thining out the choices on offer to meet my needs.
the review below suggests that partridge cycles is a local family run business. you would guess that it would have a cusomer service focused approach ensuring that it keeps its loyal clients happy thusgenerating repeat business. this is not the case!! In my experience The owner is rude and arrogant. Although the staff are helpful during the sales process they suddenly dissapear when any after sales is required. i spent £1000 on a pair of bikes, and when i returned for my free service, i was told that because I was 2 weeks late, i would have to pay. I pointed out that during this visit I was also intending to buy a whole range of accessories, but this seemed to have little impact on the owner who can obviously do without the business. who-ever wrote the review 'you wont get taken for a ride' must either have a stong sense of irony......... or work for the company. even a bike rep has told me he doesnt like going there!
The sales staff were good, (until i had paid). the "expert" had to go on the internet to investigate how to set-up the suspension (which he got wrong!).
The after sales service was terrible. i took my £2500 MTB for it's 6 week free service, with minor faults and adjustment to the brakes. when it was returned it hadn't been touched. the faults were not rectified. i was then told the brakes were still being worn in by 1 member of staff (that's why it's rubbing) and another i had damaged to disc. the squeaking front brake because i had... maybe oiled it!!!
cycling home i spent most of my time re-adjusting the bike and re-tuning the gears.
once the bike was purchased and they had the money the staff had no interest in helping. They were insulting and surly.
good bike, terrible after sales.
I won't be using the shop again for my daughters bike or any accessories and i wouldn't recommend it. I'll be using the bike shed in

In the main body of the superstore there are hundreds of bikes on display such as mountain bikes, road bikes, town & trail bikes, specialist bikes including ex-demo and factory seconds, so you will be sure to find the right bike for you at the right price for you. Partridges also buy and sell used bikes too.
You will also be able to purchase all bike accessories, clothing, parts and cycle carriers.
At the rear of the store is a cycle are where you can take a bike out to try out and see how suitable it is for you.
MY RECENT VISIT
I recently visited the shop to view the bikes with the purpose of buying one for my daughter for Xmas this year. Upon entering the store I was greeted with a hello, but wasn't pounced on in a salesman fashion, which I liked.
My daughter loved the array of bikes and she liked several of the many bikes on display and was easily able to jump on them to see which size was best for her, without being frowned at by staff for soing so. The sales assistant we dealt with was very friendly, well informed and very helpful. I explained to him that I was after a new bike for my daughter but she was still unable to ride without stabilizers. The assistant enquired as to what bike my daughter currently had and advised me to stick with that bike for the time being as it's a bike she
is familiar and confident with therefore making it perfect for her to progress to riding without stabilizers. !!!!
The point is, this store gave me personal advice instead of trying to get me to spend my money there and then, they seriously had my daughters best interests at heart. What a novel experience!.
So I didn't purchase a bike with them on this occasion but I will be buying her next bike from there when she is ready.
Can I top this review off by also adding that their prices are great too, the bikes I looked out for my nearly 9 year old were in the range of £75 + which I believe is what you would expect to pay anyway.
