Advantages: Some great prices
Disadvantages: Untidy and unloved stores, staff rude and useless
Sports Direct is a chain of sports stores that sporting goods a cheap prices. They have over 470 stores under various trading names including Sports World, Lillywhites, Gilesports and Donnay International. Stores are located all over the UK as well as in Ireland, Belgium, Holland and Slovenia.
Sports Direct is quite far down the social scale of shops - it's a akin to the likes of Poundland and Primark... cheap and nasty. It sells sports clothing and equipment for men, women and children, with the biggest departments being footwear and football. There's also large golf department that sometimes has some great offers on too.
The stores are often huge, sometimes spanning 2 or 3 floors and are usually filled to the rafters to stock. It'll be hung on walls from floor to ceiling (usually with the thing my wife wants at the top), and rails of stock will be plonked in the middle of floors, making it difficult to get about and actually look round the shop.
The staff are usually young (straight out of school or college), rude and fairly useless at their job. The shops are untidy, with clothes thrown all over the floor and at times the queues for the tills can be horrendous.
So why do we shop there? Simple really, price. Sports Direct sells designer sports goods (Nike, Adidas, Reebok etc) at excellent prices. The trainers in particular are well-priced and much cheaper than competing sports stores such as JD or JJB. And this is the trade-off you have to make... if you want a clean tidy, all-singing, all-dancing sports shop, go to JJB or JD. If you want a store that's unloved and messy, but sells quality merchandise at cheap prices, Sports Direct is for you.
As a side note, if there's not one near to you, or you don't want to brave the shops, you can now buy online at: www.sportsdirect.com
Summary: A good shop for sports bargains
