Advantages: Everything to do with sports under one roof
Disadvantages: Quality of the items aren't fantastic
I've been purchasing things from sports direct for over a year now. Before that I would buy my sports gear from next, new look and random shops that are round and about in town. I wasn't too bothered about the brand, as long as I liked what saw and I got exactly what I was looking for. I was then out and about in Altrincham one day and dropped into sports direct which seemed quite busy and popular.
It is a huge shop jam packed with sports gear. The first impression for me was that it is way too over crowded. There are clothes and shoes piled all the way up to the ceiling, there are racks and racks of clothes for all men, women and children on the shop floor and I felt a little swamped to be honest. So in terms of organization, although they have divided men's clothes, women's clothes and children clothes separately, just the fact that they are so packed together made me feel like it is quite a messy shop over all.
They have a huge variety of things to choose from like camping equipment, special football shoes, yoga and gym equipment, and biking, they have it all. Although the store is very big, I think they need something a lot bigger just to keep things organized. Also because they don't have many stores around the city, I would think they would have one big shop and keep it in order so that people from around the city would feel more comfortable and chose sports direct as the 'Go to' place for sportswear.
I noticed that their prices were not very cheap, but less than what you'd normally pay elsewhere. Because they have all the major sports brands like Nike, Adiddas, Puma, etc, they are expensive. But if you have a good rummage through, a lot of items they can be found on offer as well. So you can bag a good bargain in sports direct for branded things. They also have more local brands which are cheaper like Lonsdale, Kangol, LA gear, etc. They have very similar things to the big brands, only cheaper.
My first purchase from Sports direct was two pairs of jeans. I got two for twelve pounds and that is ridiculously cheap. One year on, I still wear them. I wear them for everyday use and over time I have noticed that they have worn out a little in the sense that despite using fabric softener, they have a rough texture. When I bought them they felt like normal rough and tough jeans but as I've washed them over the year and wore them, the texture of the denim has gone quite hard which makes it a little uncomfortable to wear. I still wear them though!
Recently I got a few things that I found were quite cheap and worth getting. I was in need of some lounge wear so I got a pair of jogging bottoms by Slazenger for 4 pounds, a pair of three quarter jogging bottoms by LA gear for three pounds and a training vest by Nike for 12 pounds(usually priced 20+ pounds) . I loved all of my purchases, they were exactly what I was looking for. But only two weeks later, I've noticed that both my jogging bottoms have got holes in them in the seam area. Nothing that I can't sew back together but the fact that both of them got holes really disappointed me. I only have washed them twice in the past two weeks and I was expecting them to last a lot longer. I've also noticed that they are developing little baubles which I don't mind if there are only a few considering it is lounge wear but I did expect a lot more in terms of the quality of the products.
Over all, I do see myself going back to sports direct for sportswear but I don't think I'd go for the very cheap things because I now know that they don't stay in very good condition. I am also skeptical about trying their footwear and think I would rather go to an actual Nike or Puma store considering trainers are an expensive purchase and I want them to last me a good two years before I have to get a new pair.
I would recommend sports direct for a sportswear lover, or even for someone who loves to lounge around in their pyjamas all day. You really can bag a good bargain. But, keeping in mind, you get what you pay for, if you expect a 4 pound pair of jogging bottoms to last forever, they won't!
They do have a very good online web page where you can order online and have your things delivered but I have never done that because I prefer going to the shop, looking at the items in person and having peace of mind before buying. I save myself the hassle of sending things back and then having something go wrong! Unless you are 100% sure of an item, don't order online as it is a big disappointment if it's not what you had in mind. You also end up paying standard delivery charges which you don't get back!
Summary: For the convenience and variety of sports direct, I do find myself going back to shop
