Sainsbury's Peanut Butter Crunchy
by whatwhywherewhen
I love peanut butter. I have it on plain bread or on toast. It HAS to be the crunchy variety though. None of this this smooth stuff! I'm overly loyal to what brand of peanut butter i buy, i normally just pick out best valued brand in whatever supermarket i'm in.
I got this version of sainsburys crunchy peanut butter recently. ... It cost around 90p for a 340g jar. The jar is glass with a red label and red plastic lid. The label also have a list of ingrediants and nutritional information.
Twisting the id off is easily enough. Then theres the plastic film layer, which is good because you can be sure nothings got inside it before you have. You can tell from a bit the peanut butter on the knife that its very thick with peanuts. Just the way i like it! But because its thick i have to perhaps use more in order to cover the bread. The butter is a golden colour with a firm texture. The taste is really great but not anything to set it apart from the others, but certainly not the worst i've tried before so i am happy with for the time being.
The glass jar can be washed out and recycled.
All in all this is a good peanut butter. I like to think of myself as an expert on peanut butter and i know a good one from a bad one. This is a good one. Nothing to set it apart from a dependable brand of peanut butter. Read the complete review |

Sainsbury's Basics Lemon Curd
by annav
At only 22p for a jar that has 411g, you cant really go wrong. I had a quick jaunt into sainsburys one afternoon as I was nearer there than tescos. I like to eat toast in the mornings and this caught my eye. I do like jam but thought I would try as part of the downgrade brand challenge.
It really tastes very nice, it is so ... lemony and the texture of the curd is not too thick, not lumpy and is very smooth. It spreads on the bread easily and does not taste like it cost 22p.
It comes in a plain glass jar, you can see the yellow curd inside. It has a sainsburys basic label and this also shows the nutritional value. As you can imagine this isnt great. It contains a lot of sugar and quite a bit of fat, therefore you shouldnt eat too much too soon I guess.
It only contains lemon oil and not any actual lemons, so this is the only fault really.
It works well in cooking as well, you can add it to things like cakes either before or after baking. It also tastes good on pancakes to add a sweet flavour without adding pure sugar.
This jar has lasted me about 6 breakfasts so far and a couple of cooking sessions, and its still not even half empty because the flavour is so strong you dont need to use too much.
Do try this as alternative to the normal lemon curd because I really cant tell any difference apart from the boring packaging. Read the complete review |

Sainsburys Basics Crunchy Peanut Butter
by Vixstar
From being a peanut butter hater a few years ago, I now get through plenty of the stuff especially for breakfast. Seeing as it has become a staple in my diet I thought I'd try out a few brands to see which I prefer.
I'd tried many of the more expensive brands and decided, with them costing £1.40 upwards, it may be time to ... drop a brand level and give the Sainsbury's basics crunchy peanut butter a go, especially at only 62 p a jar. I haven't tried much of the basics range but generally find Sainsbury's own brand stuff very good.
With the basics range you are not paying for superfluous packaging - just a simple plastic label and a plastic jar for this nutty butter (although the plastic jar can also be found on Sainsbury's next brand up PB too).
On opening the jar I was greeted by what I was expecting lumpy peanut coloured spread - although it did look a little shinier and runnier than other brands I'd tried. A quick investigation of the label explained this slight anomaly, only 87% of this butter is peanuts with two different oils - rapeseed and palm - being added to it (along with salt and sugar). Hmm was I about to try peanut oil? I spread some on my toast - easy to spread, a little going a longer way than other brands (sometimes slightly further than I'd wanted thanks to the runnier nature) and plenty of nuts - and tucked in. The peanut butter did not taste at all oily, it tasted pleasantly nutty and ever so slightly sweet, without the mouth gluing effect of thicker peanut butters. I've tested the next brand up of Sainsbury's peanut butter and I can't really tell the difference between the two as far as taste is concerned.
Nutritionally a large amount of peanut butter is never great for you and this brand is no exception with 610 cal per 100g (just under a third of the jar) and 52.6 g of fat (9.8g of which are saturates). But it's not a total nutritional nightmare with 22.2g of protein and 5.6g of fibre.
Looking at these figures I must stop eating teaspoons full of the stuff, having said that the runnier texture did stop me doing that to some extent. Although I did find it excellent as a dip with celery sticks!
All in all I would definitely buy this peanut butter again, I did miss the thicker texture of other brands but there was no degradation in the taste. And for the price you definitely can't do 'butter'! Read the complete review |
