Flora Extra Light Margarine
Advantages: Much better for you than a lot of spreads, not much difference in taste
Disadvantages: Doesn't melt very well and can be a bit thick
I've been using this margarine for a long time now, after switching to it in one of my healthy eating spells. I'm not good at dieting, and I find the best way of managing my weight is to make small changes like buying reduced fat versions of things, and saving a few calories that way, rather than banning items of food which I think leads to a bit of a negative relationship with food.
Anyway, this spread has served me well, and I see no reason to change it. Especially when you look at the facts and figures compared to the full fat versions on the market. The main selling point of this margarine is that it contains less fat than most spreads, with a 10g serving containing just 19 calories. It contains Omega-3 and 6 fatty acids which replace the saturated fats we all know are so bad for us.
I usually buy this in big tubs as we get through a fair bit in our house. It costs around £2 for 500g tub, but obviously this depends where you buy it and whether it's on offer or not.
The packaging is slightly different to the one pictured above, it's now blue in colour. But nobody really cares about the colour of their margarine tub really. The tub is standard with a plastic lid and foil cover to keep the margarine fresh when you first open it. I usually discard the foil layer once it's open, and I've had no issues with the margarine not being fresh.
As for the taste....well in all honesty, I rarely notice any difference in margarines. At the end of the day, they're not butter, so they all blend into one in my opinion. I rarely have margarine on something which doesn't then go on to be covered with another item of food, so I don't really taste this margarine in its own right. I tend to use it on sandwiches or if I'm having something on toast (jam, beans, peanut butter), so the margarine isn't the overriding taste. That said, when I do rarely have toast just with margarine, it tastes like any other margarine, and I don't feel like I'm missing out because it contains less fat.
The only downside of this margarine is the consistency. I find it a little difficult to spread sometimes, and it doesn't melt brilliantly. Usually, when you spread margarine onto hot toast, it melts fairly quickly, but with this one it can leave lumps which don't melt. I find the solution is to spread it more thinly than I normally would, or you can spread it for longer until the lumps melt into the toast. This also applies to sandwiches, you only need a thin layer otherwise you'll have big thick lumps of margarine overtaking your buttie. I only really use this to avoid my sandwiches being too dry, so I only apply a thin layer.
Overall, I see no reason to stop using this margarine, and it's an easy change to make which can make a real difference to your diet. This is why I always buy this margarine, and it's one of the few items I'm loyal to regardless of whether it's on offer or not.
Summary: A worthwhile switch to make your diet healthier
