“ Brand: Morrisons / Type: Chocolate Spread „
For quite a while, Borgeth and Borgette had been asking me to buy some chocolate spread. 'It's really nice, Dad,' they would say. 'Mum has it at hers!' My reply was usually a wordless grimace, or a simple: 'You are NOT having chocolate spread! You might as well just eat chocolate for lunch (to which they'd say 'Yes please!')
Then one day I was shopping with them in Morrisons, just for a few odds and ends and they came across Morrisons Value Chocolate Spread. It was on 50p. 'Dad, look, and it is only cheap, can we dad? It's nice! Can we? Can we?' I succumbed...
Into the trolley it went.
A few bits:
The spread comes in 350g jars, has a white lid and the standard Morrisons Value yellow label. The ingredients are sugar, vegetable oil, fat reduced cocoa, whey powder, emulsifier and flavouring (sounds yum, doesn't it?)
Allergy Warning: It contains milk and soya and it is made in a factory which uses nuts ingredients.
So I took the chocolate spread home and for lunch a few days later I made toast for us all, putting the chocolate spread on theirs. Borgette told me to try some on one of mine, so I gave in... I had two without and one with the spread on it. When I came to mine and took a bite, my mouth was filled with the toast and chocolate and two words sprung to mind:
I must say I have eaten my words as well as the chocolate spread. It is a rich, chocolately taste and is quite smooth to spread. I guess you can taste the cocoa mostly.
I have since had a few night time callings whilst watching TV to go to the kitchen and make a few slices of toast with the chocolate spread on them. You can also spread it on bread and cakes.
So, I was impressed on the whole. This stuff is pretty cheap, and in this day and age where you have to shorten the purse strings and watch what you are spending, Morrisons Value Chocolate Spread is a steel at only 50p! It tastes lovely as well.
I feel like a bit of a kid really. I mean! A grown man having chocolate spread! How old am I! But then...
What the hell...
This chocolate spread is a major bargain, you get quite a big jar for about 55p and it's yummy. You can tell it's not Cadburys but I don't think anyone would know it was a proper cheapo brand if they hadn't seen the jar.
I love it because it's a pure chocolate taste, there aren't any nutty flavours in this chocolate spread and that's good because it's hard to find a tasty NON NUTTY chocolate spread at the minute. The chocolate spread looks nice and glossy in the jar and it spreads good on anything because it's not majorly thick and sticky. Nutella rips dead fresh bread apart because of how sticky it is but that doesn't happen with this Morrisons Value one because it's got such a nice smooth texture.
The taste is milk chocolate and it tastes mega chocolatey, it's a wickedly rich and that shocked me because cheap chocolate spread has usually got a strong chocolate flavour but it's not rich usually. I had some on crackers about 5 mins ago and I can still taste the chocolate in my mouth, it's got a yummy after taste like after you've eaten a proper bar of chocolate.
Another thing I like about this chocolate spread is that it's not madly sweet like a lot of them. It IS proper sweet but all chocolate spreads are, some are very over powering though and get sickly too quick but this one is just right. I love the feel of eating it as well because it's creamy and just feels yummy in my mouth.
For the price I don't think you'll EVER find a better jar of chocolate spread. Look at the mad price of Nutella and then try this and see the difference, if you want something with a hazlenut flavour then you might find this a bit boring but it's not really. If I don't have Nutella I'll go for Cadburys chocolate spread and this one isn't that much different, I know that sounds mad but I think Cadburys chocolate spread is a bit TOO rich sometimes and this Morrisons one is even better in that way.
On a recent trip to Morrison's I noticed their own brand Chocolate Spread which I couldn't help but notice was packaged in a similar style to the Cadburys version, a glass bottle with a purple lid. Due to the massive price difference I decided to give it a try, I was able to purchase two jars of Morrison's Chocolate Spread for the same price as 1 jar of Cadburys Chocolate Spread.
The first thing I noticed about the spread when I removed the lid was the appearance, not only did the outside of the jar remind me of Cadburys Chocolate Spread but the colour and consistency appeared to be pretty similar too. I have only tried Nutella once and my knife literally got stuck in the jar due to the heavy consistency so we always buy Cadburys and tend to go through a jar a week; however, due to the discovery of Morrison's own brand that is going to change !
Morrison's own brand Chocolate Spread is really easy to spread, the consistency is very smooth and at last I can spread some chocolate spread on a slice of bread without tearing it ! Although the consistency is smooth it isn't thin so you can create a nice, smooth covering regardless of whether you're using it on bread, toast, waffles, etc. The taste was a very pleasant surprise, due to the price I wasn't quite sure what to expect but the chocolate was very milky and my kids haven't noticed the difference between the Cadburys version and Morrison's own brand ... result !! I have tried the spread myself and I have to admit that it is lovely, the taste certainly doesn't reflect the price tag as it doesn't taste cheap at all. The spread has just the right amount of sweetness and is a perfect 'milk chocolate' to taste. I think I would also struggle to taste the difference between this spread and the Cadburys version if I did a taste test as it is just as nice, if not nicer due to the smooth consistency which allows you to get the perfect covering.
I would definitely recommend you give Morrison's own brand Chocolate Spread a go, you'll hardly notice the difference apart from the price !!
We picked up a couple of things from Morrisons recently, it was a matter of going in for a quick shop on the way home from visiting friends. Ordinarily we shop at Tesco, but we were really very impressed with Morrisons and happy to spend a few pounds in there.
One of the things we picked up was this Morrisons Value Chocolate Spread. A jar was only 50p, so we thought we couldn't really go far wrong at that price. That's a fair few pennies cheaper than the Tesco Value versionm and it looked as though the jar was about the same size and the content appeared to be similar too.
Well, we certainly weren't disappointed, and in fact we were quite impressed for the price! This chocolate spread gets a big thumbs up from me on the texture front alone. It's really smooth, soft and very easy to spread, which is something that bothers me about the more expensive chocolate spreads. Yes they taste thicker and nicer when they've got a heavy consistency, but you can't spread them without tearing your bread for love nor money! This stuff glides on easily and doesn't give any resistance.
The taste is slightly milkier than the Tesco Value version, and dare I say it, almost as nice as the brand name versions like Cadbury! I do notice a difference, but not enough of one to warrant the £1 mark up per jar that you have to pay to get Cadbury Chocolate Spread over Morrisons Value.
For 50p a jar this stuff deserves five stars. It's lovely and cheap, easy to spread, has a great milky chocolate taste and despite having a soft, thin texture, you don't even have to use loads of it at a time to get a decent flavour. Top stuff.
