Advantages: Economical and tasty
Disadvantages: Offputting sleeve!
I absolutely love and adore Houmous! I love it with crudites, on sandwiches... all-sorts rally! I saw this 'Basics' one in Sainsburys priced at 75p a tub and was intrigued to try a 'cheap' version of it but right up until the last minute I almost set it aside and didn't purchase it to be totally honest with you cos I did think it would be gross being so cheap!
Clear plastic, round tub with a white cardboard 'sleeve' that slides on and off it. In white and bright orange writing on the top of the sleeve I'm told it's Sainsbury's Basics Houmous 'Less tahini still great for dipping' and there's a scribble in orange of what I assume is meant to be chick peas! There is a display till and use by date on there and I'm told to keep it refrigerated and there is an at a nutritional chart on there for ease of glancing at and purchasing if you approve! On the back of the sleeve I'm told how to store it, contact details for Sainsbury's are given, a full nutritional rundown is there, ingredients and allergy advice is also listed, I'm told it is Vegetarian and Vegan and finally there is a bar-code on there. Yes this is very cheap looking packaging but once the sleeve it thrown away all your left with is a plastic pot with no labeling on it so no one would know your a cheap skate type of thing! lol.
I'm shocked I'm telling you this but I really loved it! As I mentioned before I actually didn't hold out much hope for it but this is a fabulous economy buy and just...well... really tasty!
Appearance wise it looks a bit like stiff porridge! Creamy beige in colour, rather smooth as a stiffish paste, smells heavily of garlic and doesn't appear oily at all but simply moist.
If you dip into the pot or take some houmous out it is really is of great consistency. Quite moist so it's spreadable and I like the way it isn't all lumpy!
The whole thing is moist with a hint of lemon to it and a nice amount of garlic added and it's all very well blended. Like I said this isn't an oily houmous but if you like it that way add a little olive oil or something to it! Tasty and easy to eat this is and for me it lacks nothing at all, particularly flavour and I thoroughly enjoyed this cheap offering I can tell you that much!
Contains Sesame Seed.
