I love the whole St Dalfour range because, as someone with multiple allergies (gluten, egg, milk) and an aversion to artificial sweeteners, preservatives and thickeners that seem to be prevalent in a lot of jams and preserves these days, this range was refreshingly natural, using traditional methods of manufacture. I first came across their marmalade on holiday in France and on returning to the UK, searched for it finding it at Waitrose. What a nice thing to see the French style jar and label design again which instantly took me back to my holiday! The blackcurrant preserve was a nice discovery - I wanted to reproduce a delicious fridge cheesecake I'd previously had in a restaurant that had a tangy blackcurrant topping to compliment the cream cheese below and was wondering how on earth I could do the same - well, this preserve does it all for you. Yes, it's a cheat but the taste is just what you want - just the right level of tartness, not too sweet as so many jams and preserves are these days, a taste that cuts through the richness of the cheese which is what makes a good cheesecake. Whether you're baking or just spreading on your toast, this preserve is perfect. There are so few pleasures in eating sometimes for those with food allergies that the simple things, like ordinary buttered toast can be made an extraordinary experience and all the better knowing that you don't have to worry about being accidentally caught out by some hidden ingredient in the small print. All natural ingredients, lovely packaging and great tangy taste. Vive la France!
