“ Type: Cheese Spread „
My Dad is known within our family for being the 'Tesco's bargain hunter'. He goes to Tesco's most evenings, at around 8pm and finds all the stock that is being reduced. He finds some real bargain and it means that the rest of the family get to try things that we would normally be too tight to buy if they were full price. Last night, my Dad got Tesco's Cheese and Spring Onion Sandwich Filler and gave it to me to have for lunch today.
The cheese and spring onion sandwich filler comes in a see through plastic pot which is similar to the sort of pots you get potato salad and coleslaw in. The pot has a label on the top of it giving a product description and the usual set by dates. The tub I have is 200g.
Well my Dad got this for 21p but normally it would set you back £1.05.
What Does It Look Like?
The sandwich filler has a very thick consistency, sort of like a paste which makes it really easy to use as sandwich filler as it's not too runny and the perfect consistently to pop straight into your sandwich. The mixture itself obviously contains cheese and spring onions and you can clearly see both of these ingredients in the filler. The rest of the ingredients consist of mayonnaise and the cheese and spring onion is mixed into this to make the paste.
This sandwich filler does smell quite strong and you get a whiff of it the moment you take the lid of. Personally, I think it's a very pleasant smell. You can definitely smell the cheese as the main scent with an underlying hint of the spring onion. I found this odd as I thought the onion would overpower the cheese but this isn't the case.
I absolutely loved this. It's really quite cheesy which I liked as I love cheese and the onion, again is sort of an underlying taste although still plenty strong enough to taste. I often find with cheese and onion products, the onion can overpower the cheese but this product has the perfect amount of both.
The consistency of the filler is also pleasant, not too runny so that it runs out the side of the sandwich but not so thick that you are unable to spread it into your sandwich. The cheese in this product is grated which means that the cheese flavour is consistent and you don't get sections of the sandwich that taste really strong of cheese where it hasn't evened out properly.
I would definitely recommend this product. If you are lazy and can not be bothered to make your own sandwich filling, then this is an item you would like. I think that £1.05 is a fairly reasonable price for this, as the tub I have will easily do three sandwiches. It taste delicious and is easy to spread. The only downside is that it's not particularly healthy for you!
I Hate making sandwiches, I'm sure most people feel the same, why would we want to waste our life grating cheese, chopping onions and mixing in mayonnaise? Well we don't anymore, because Tesco does it all for us!
I was mooching around Tesco the other day, and was drawn to the sandwich filler section, the thought of all those nights slaving at the work top making my lunch for work came back to me. These could be the end to all my problems!
For £1.96 you get a 400g tub full of ready made filler, ready to be slapped onto some bread for a sandwich. The filler contains cheddar cheese, onion, and spring onion, and is all mixed with mayonnaise. It seems to have two cheese types, but reading the ingredients it is actually coloured cheddar cheese.
It is very easy to use, it's nice and thick and can either be spread with a knife or even a spoon into the sandwich, I usually get around six sandwiches out of this, but i do have it pretty thick. I don't use margarine on the bread when using this filler, the mayonnaise does the job perfectly, and saves more time!
When it comes to taste, it is lovely, Nice and cheesy and you can definitely taste the onion too. If you have ever bought a cheese and onion sandwich ready made from the supermarkets, you will instantly recognize this stuff, its obviously what they use to make their pre packed sandwiches.
A 50g serving of this filler contains 177 calories and 16.6g of fat, this is quite high, but it is cheese we're talking about so we will let it off. The packet states that it should be kept refrigerated, and once opened used with two days, for me, i would never eat this pot within two days and i always have it open much longer, as long as you use it before the use by date i don't think it will do you any harm.
I will definitely be going back to Tesco to try more of their fillers, you can literally make a sandwich in 30 seconds. All the time saved i can now spend knitting, or writing reviews on other products on the Dooyoo website!
Four stars due to the high calorie content, apart from that it's brilliant.
One of my weaknesses when I want to treat myself is having sandwich fillers. I say weakness s they generally contain a lot of calories, and this Cheese and Onion one is certainly non different.
The Tesco sandwich filler comes in a 200g container, and costs around £1.30. You can often get offers on multibuys for these so they are worth looking out for.
The cheese and onion filler tastes very indulgent it has to be said. Its very creamy and thick, and can be quite hard to spread if you have soft bread, as its that stodgy. That's because of all the mayonnaise mixed with this product, and it can sometimes overwhelm the taste of the cheese. You can taste bits of onion in this product, but the overall taste of it makes it very moreish.
I can see would be a great product for people in a rush, who haven't got time to make their own-all you have to do is spread it on for a delicious sandwich. I don't think it's the best thing to make in the morning and take to work though, as the filler has quite strong smell to it. The bonus however is that none of the filler is going to fall out, like if you had just grated cheese.
As I say I really like this product, but I always feel guilty after eating it. If you consider you were to have a couple of slices of bread, then combined it with the calorie intake of this filler, it would easily push you over 400 calories, and it has a extremely high amount of fat.
The other thing to remember about this is that it needs to be refrigerated and eaten within a couple of days of opening. Me being someone that doesn't like waste, means that in feel the need to scoff it all and really load the sandwiches up even fuller, which makes them even higher in fat.
Overall, I would say you need to have this in moderation, otherwise say hello to a spare tyre(or two) round your waist!
This sandwich filler comes in a re-sealable 200g plastic tub.
You will pay around £1.30 for one tub and £2.50 for two tubs.
The filler has a strong smell of cheese, onion and chives will hits you as soon as you open the tub.
You will have to spoon this product onto your sandwiches because it is mixed together with a thick mayonaise. It does go quite a long way and because it is so strong you won't need a lot to taste it.
It has a nice cheesy and onion taste to it and cheese lovers will adore this item, but for me it was a little bit too strong and slightly bland. I got a bit sick of the cheese taste by the time I'd finished my sandwich.

If you just glanced at this product then you might not realise how many calories are in it. I also think that the green packaging gives the impression that it's a healthy product when it is far from healthy. I won't be buying this again, because although it is tasty, it's just too calorific for me.
As you might guess, this is available at Tesco!
It is a convenient ready made sandwich filler, and it will be found in the chillers cabinets.
The packaging that it comes in is a 200g plastic tub sealed only by a sticky paper label with the ingredients and calorific values. Easily spotted on the shelves with its green labelling!!
When you open it up you can really smell it, very strong of cheese and chives, a pungent aroma but nonetheless pleasant. It is creamy in colour as it contains mayonnaise in the mix and you can make out little shreds of cheese and very small greenish whitish onion bits.
The consistency is very thick and gloopy and will need to be spooned out! It looks nice and creamy when you are putting it on your sandwiches.
It spreads very well and you may not need margarine when using this sandwich spread. It is slightly difficult to do a thin layer on the bread with it being a little bit chunky cos the volume of ingredients is pretty high.
It does not go very far unfortunately, maybe a few rounds of sandwiches, however much cheaper than buying pre made ones!
The taste!! Well the whole combination of the small shredded bits of cheese and tiny bits of onion and the mayonaisse all stirred together is really nice and it is quite a powerful taste, this aint no weakling spread!! The creaminess is provided by the mayonaisse and the cheese is pretty mature tasting which I absolutely love, the oniony bits add interest and makes the whole complete, it is definitely better with the addition of these.
I remember last time I looked at the packet I noticed the humongous amount of fat in this product. I mean, colossal amount. I can't even remember what it is but I remember being horrified and thinking no way can I ever buy this again, and I have not bought it since. I am actually quite tempted to go and get some next time I am out just for old times sake!!!
In summary, needs to be consumed purely in moderation and I couldn't face eating it all the time because of the frankly crazy amount of fat and calories in it!!! But now and again I recommend getting it with the weekly shop just because it is so yummy as are all the sandwich fillers.
Taste, 10 out of 10
Healthiness, 0 out of 10.
~~~ LUNCH TIME ~~~
We're doing the bathroom at the moment ... the plumber who was supposed to fit the bath, sink and toilet last weekend still hasn't turned up and I am up to my eyeballs in tile cement and grout. I am not a professional either and what started out as a "fun project" has very quickly turned into a nightmare !!!
Today, my dad has come round to my house to "help" and my 19 month old son keeps popping in to "help" too ... which in reality means that one is "supervising" and the other is "getting under my feet" !!!
As you can imagine meal times have gone out of the window and it's been a week of take-a-ways and snacks. This lunchtime I popped down to Tesco for some milk and came back with a tub of Cheese & Onion Sandwich Filler. I've got a spare half hour now whilst my dad goes to collect a few more tiles for me so thought I would write a review ...
~~~ TESCO CHEESE & ONION SANDWICH FILLER ~~~
The 250g tub of Tesco Cheese and Onion Sandwich Filler made five sandwiches in total (two for dad, two for me and one for the little 'un). This surprised me as the tub itself looked quite small. They weren't small sandwiches either and the thickness of the filling on each was pretty impressive ... maybe Tesco use the same technology for their packaging that Doctor Who uses for the TARDIS ?
Anyway ... I absolutely loved my sandwich. The filling had a delightfully light and creamy texture and it tasted wonderful. The mature cheese that has been used in the recipe gave this a lovely rich taste which was complimented perfectly by the onions. I mention this because I have tried other brands of cheese and onion sandwich fillers in the past and I've often found that the onion taste over-powers the cheese ... this was not the case with the tub I bought today from Tesco.
This sandwich filler was, in my opinion, a fantastic hassle free way of creating a quick and simple sandwich which was packed with flavour. My dad informed me that he had tried it with a jacket potato too ... which seems like a great idea for a simple but tasty filling.
Sadly, my little boy didn't seem that impressed as he spat his out but then he is going through a stage of being "an awkward little so and so" when it comes to food ... so I'm not sure his opinion can taken seriously to be honest !
As for my dad I think he thoroughly enjoyed his sandwich too ... I say this mainly because his plate was soon empty and he didn't complain. Mind you, between mouthfuls I think he was too busy analysing my "achievements" ...
Dad: You seem to have broken more tiles than you've put on ...
Me: I know.
Dad: I'll have to go back to B&Q now and get another couple of boxes for you.
Me: I'd realised that ... thanks.
Dad: How much did you say you get for writing all these reviews ?
Me: It depends really, it's mostly based on getting ratings from other members.
Dad: Well they'd better get bloody clicking then because them tiles cost £1.50 a piece !
I love my dad ... because he always says exactly what he thinks !

~~~ FINAL THOUGHT ~~~
If only everything in life was as simple and straightforward as a tub of Tesco Cheese & Onion Sandwich Filler !!!
Seeing as my family usually eat a lot of bread, sandwiches etc every day, for packed lunches or as a quick snack and instead of the usual ham or cheese I thought I'd pick up something different as I was getting a bit bored of the same meal at lunchtime each day. I saw these at Tescos, 2 tubs for £2.50, or one tub for £1.25 which I thought wasn't too bad, might aswell give it a go as they looked quite nice and turned out they definitely were!
The tub is quite large, 200ml, doesn't look like it will go a long way but it does! The packaging is a light green colour with nutrition information and stuff on the front, and the tub is clear plastic with an easy open lid.
The cheese and onion flavour is both one of mine and my daughter's favourite flavours for a sandwich filler. It looked appealing and the taste was really good and flavoursome, of cheese and onion with a hint of garlic. I don't lack in the amount of this I put into a sandwich or cob as I like to taste the filling more than the bread and it still lasted quite a while!
I was really happy with this product, great for the family and has a predictable taste, it doesn't have any strange tasting flavours also not too pricey for what you get. Definitely give this a go.
Everyone in our house takes packed lunches - to school, college, work, wherever.......lunches need to be filling, they need to be healthy, and they need to be reasonably priced.....and it is very easy to buy the same old lunchbox components every week.
I have to admit I am not overly adventurous in the packed lunch department. Sandwiches form the mainstay of lunchtime, and fillings comprise generally of ham, pate, cheese, and tuna.....or if we are having a "skint week", jam, marmite, and chocolate spread. Alternatively pasta and couscous dishes, make regular appearances at lunchtime (often leftovers from the previous night's meal).
I try not to buy convenience food - it generally works out more expensive. Why buy prepacked tuna and mayonnaise, for example, when a tin of tuna mixed with a bit of mayonnaise at home takes just a few minutes, and costs a third of the shop bought version?
However, I was given a tub of Tesco Cheese and Onion sandwich filler by someone who had bought it and wasn't going to use it. So, of course I was happy to give "free food" a go.....and have been pleasantly surprised.
The tub is a different design from the one above (which is an old picture) but it is obvious from the tub that it is Cheese & Onion filler. The weight is 250grammes and they are 2 tubs for £2.50 - so £1.25 a tub (for anyone reading this late at night whose maths brain has gone to sleep!).
The tub doesn't look as though it will do more than one or two sandwiches - making £1.25 a tub quite expensive. After all, you can go to the sandwich shop or deli and get a sarnie made up for not much more than that.....with no effort!
But, the reality is very different. I like a chunky sandwich - I like to be able to taste the filling, not just know it is in there! My husband says I am too generous with my fillings, but there we are - the point is, that I am not stingy with my portions......and yet I still get a good 5 or 6 sandwiches (ie 5 or 6 lots of 2 slices of bread) of generously filled sandwiches out of this one pot! Fantastic!
So, if you get five sandwiches out of this tub, that makes it just 25p a go......I am liking this sandwich filler more and more!
But of course, value for money is worth nothing if the product doesn't taste nice.
This is cheese & onion - and yes you can definitely taste the onion, so if you don't like onion much, don't buy this.
But I do! So on we go!
This is cheddar cheese, onion, and spring onion, in mayonnaise. The mayonnaise makes up 48% of the product, which sounds an awful lot, and may lead you to thinking you are going to have no flavour to this. But there is also 40% cheddar cheese - of which over half is mature - so you get a really good taste of cheese. The cheese is coarsely grated, so you get a good amount of "chunk" without it being difficult to spread.
The onion element comprises 7% white onion and 4.5% spring onion - so over 11% is onion.......that leads to a strong flavour of onion, so as mentioned above, if you are not that keen on onion, give this one a miss.
For those of you doing the maths, we are up to 99 and a bit % from the basic ingredients - mayo, cheese and onion. The remaining fraction of a percent is dijon mustard. Nice and simple.
This is suitable for vegetarians, and generally, once opened it should be used within a couple of days.
So, all in all, we have here a deliciously flavourful sandwich filling, easy to spread, substantial in texture, suitable for even the hungriest of lunch eaters, and at a very reasonable price. It doesn't seem worth me getting my cheese grater out now that I have been presented with something like this, and I will definitely be buying it myself in the future.
For the perfect sandwich, my tip is to add slices of really ripe tomato.....just delish!
We often have Buffets at work, and although I normally make myself in charge of the Sausage Rolls, sometimes I bring some Sandwiches. After all you need a couple of sandwiches if you are skipping your normal lunch and munching at a Buffet. Although it would be great just to eat Crisps and Sweets, but I guess we all need something a bit more filling.
I've bought the Asda version of this often, but recently came across the Tesco version. I'm sure that it is probably pretty much the same product, just with a different sticker to denote the shop it is sold in.
This comes in a see through plastic tub. It is quite a deep tub and is a square shape. There is a sticker over the opening of the tub, and the way you open the tub is to pull the label off from 1 side of the tub and the lid lifts easily off. The sticker on the tub is alright. It has a picture of the product in use in a sandwich, and the colourings are greens and yellows, probably to indicate the Cheese and onion colourings. The tub is 200g and costs £1.05 full price. often there can be an offer on the selection of Sandwich filling, but the best offer is 2 for £1.80. I know it is always a saving, but I personally love Buy One Get One Free's.
So what does this taste like? It is nice, but I couldn't eat a lot of this, as I would find it sickly I think. It s quite thick, but when spread on bread it can be spread pretty easily, or you can make this nice and thick. There is chopped up bits of Spring Onion, and bits of grated Cheddar and this is mixed through the paste-like substance which is made up of Mayo, Creamed Cheese and a sprinkling of Chives. The taste is pretty strong, and the mixture just seems right. it tastes Creamy, Cheesy, Tangy and Zingy.
Perhaps not to everyone's taste, but a nice change from the norm!
Sandwich spread. Cheddar Cheese, Onion, Spring Onion and Chives in Mayonnaise.
