I'm nuts about this peanut butter!

Tesco Smooth Peanut Butter
Advantages: Price, taste, recyclable packaging
Disadvantages: None for me
There are very few products that I'm exclusively brand loyal to. Obviously there are certain brands I prefer above others, but will usually try something new if I receive it as a gift or see a good offer on something (or, increasingly since joining Dooyoo, read a good review of it). The only exceptions to this for many years have been Cadbury's (Mmmmmmmmmm) and Sunpat peanut butter. I had a bad experience with an American peanut butter called Jiff many years ago that scarred me for, well, many years! Since that awful day (yes, it kept repeating on me ALL day, eurgh!) I vowed never to try another peanut butter other than Sunpat and assumed that all other brands would taste as bad as that evil one!
Cue me making the mistake of asking my husband to pick some peanut butter (pb) up on his way home from work. As we've been married for over three years and never had any other pb in our house it never even occurred to me that he wouldn't choose Sunpat...novice mistake really! Because, in case you hadn't guessed by now, obviously he came home with Tesco's own brand of smooth pb because "it was so much cheaper than that yellow one you normally get". Ok, so he's not a pb addict like I am - I readily admit to sneaking the odd teaspoon of it whilst cooking! - so I tutted and let him get away with it (he'd just better not try the same trick when I send him for chocolate...if he comes back with Tesco's own rather than Cadbury's he can sleep in his beloved shed!).
The Tesco version comes in a glass jar (nicely recyclable) with a blue screw top lid and branding (the jar is now a straight sided one as opposed to the one shown in the above picture), with lots of nuts bouncing around on it. There is also ingredients and nutritional information and, ironically a warning that it may contain nuts!!!
I usually have pb on toast for breakfast as I have to eat quite early and I find it's the only thing that keeps me full til lunchtime. Plus I read somewhere once that it was low GI which is supposed to be a good thing and healthy so who am I to argue (although I'm not 100% sure how something that has 'butter' as one of the only two words in its name can be healthy - but if someone tells me one of my favourite foods is also healthy then bonus as far as I'm concerned! Can you tell I'm thinking wistfully of Cadbury's again?!)
I wasn't looking forward to trying this pb, I have to admit. Memories of the evil one came flooding back the first time I spread this on my morning toast. My husband watched as I sniffed it cautiously, rolling his eyes and shaking his head. I was initially relieved to find that it definitely had more of a Sunpat aroma than an evil one so I proceeded to nibble the corner of my toast, reluctantly getting a splodge of pb with it. WELL! Wasn't I pleasantly surprised! Whilst I knew that it wasn't Sunpat because I'd seen the jar, if I'd been doing a blind taste test I highly doubt I would have been able to tell the difference. It was just as creamy, not runny but not too thick, tasted nice and peanutty and was just generally delicious. The surprise must have been obvious because he looked at me with an "I told you so" expression on his face - something usually reserved for use by my face in our household so he was really revelling!
I was so impressed by this pb that I've been buying it ever since! For the purpose of this review I've now studied the jar more intently and do you know what? Peanut butter doesn't even have any butter in it!! Honestly! It's only ingredients are peanuts, peanut oil, cane sugar, vegetable oil and sea salt. Ok, I know the oil and the sugar isn't great, but they make up less than 5% of the overall contents and this is more than compensated for by the fact that there's no butter in it in my humble opinion. It is also much less calorific than I assumed it would be at only 95 calories per tablespoonful, which is around the amount I have on a morning. So those health people knew what they were talking about after all which means I can now have more chocolate every day seen as my breakfast is so healthy :)
Seriously though, I have been very impressed with this pb. No doubt there is a slight difference between this one and the leading brand, but unless you do a direct comparison I don't think you'd be able to tell. Even if I could tell the difference this is a very nice tasting pb. It's rich without being sickly, thick without being claggy and peanutty. More importantly, for me anyway, a couple of slices of toast spread with this is enough to keep me going until lunchtime without having to resort to snacking. Pricewise it comes in at £2.64 for 700g compared to £1.99 for 454g of Sunpat. As this jar will last me over two weeks worth of breakfasts it really is extremely good value so this will be my pb of choice from now on.
PS I also use this peanut butter in one of our favourite treats...a little American "candy" called Buckeyes. Little peanutty chocolately treats that look like conkers and taste like Reese's! Unfortunately though, there's no way I can claim these to be good for you :( But if you like Reese's and fancy trying them message me and I'll gladly give you the recipe!
Summary: A cheaper alternative to the leading brand with no compromise on taste or quality
