      A top notch basic food

      I have been a fan of Whole Earth ordinary peanut butter for a long time (not only is it delicious it is also an ethical product that doesn't destroy the rainforests).

      I found this on my supermarket shelf a couple of months ago and now am a complete addict! It has the crunchy peanut taste (that isn't oversweet like many brands) but with the added bonus of chocolate chips. It is lovely on toast or for use in baking (or if you are glutton like me straight of the jar). The chocolate doesn't give it a kiddie taste that is full of sugar but just an additional extra flavour - not unlike Peanut Butter Cups (Hershey's?).

      It is slightly more expensive than supermarket brands but the quality is far better and the difference in cost is minimal.

      I would buy this product if a) you like peanut butter that isn't oversweet b) you like chocolate and/ or c) you care about using ethical products. Definitely recommended and constantly in my fridge or cupboard!

      A spread to die for.

      If like me you are a lover of peanut butter then I might just have found something which is even better. Chocolate chips are hidden in this jar of Whole Earth Organic Choc and Nut Spread, which combine with the tasty and crunchy peanuts to make a spread to die for.

      I love Whole Earth; they are an ethical company of over 40 years standing. They were, until quite recently, the main suppliers of items sold in health food stores, but since major supermarkets began to stock healthy lines some have made their way onto the shelves there, but certainly not all the ranges. However I found this little beauty on the Ocado website, which means it is also going to be available in Waitrose, and it will cost £1.89 for a 227g jar. If you are interested in Whole Earth and would like to find out more visit their website at www.wholeearthfoods.com and here you can also find out which stores sell which of their products.

      The jar looks beautiful with lovely pictures of peanuts, trees, and chocolate pieces, and if you invert it you can see the little chips peering out of the bottom of the jar, like little friendly splodges on a child's playschool painting.

      The great thing about this product is that it is 22% protein, so it is great for giving you long term energy. However at 46.8g fat per 100g I think moderation has to be the key here!

      So I would suggest take an hour, take a toaster, and get a doorstep slice of something which you can use as a canvas on which to spread this amazing treat! I did and I have to tell you it is bliss. The chocolate chips are lovely and chocolaty, and the crunchy texture of the peanut butter makes this a very satisfying snack at any time of the day.
      I really love this on croissants and it is perfect on anything which can be used as a vehicle for spreading!

      Inside the jar are;

      Roasted Peanuts* (80%), Chocolate Chips* (15%) (Cocoa Mass*, Sugar*, Emulsifier: Soya Lecithin), Palm Oil*^, Sea Salt +, *Organically Grown, +Approved non-organic ingredient, ^Sustainable palm oil sourced from RSPO member.

      It is very important to note that the palm oil contained within this has not been obtained from any supplier whose production methods in any way threatens endangered species. This is vital as areas of the world such as Malaysia are being gradually eroded of their rain forests, and the habitats so crucial to the survival of species such as the orang-utan are being eliminated, threatening the species to the point of extinction. This is so important as about 1 in 10 products on UK shelves will contain palm oil as it is widely used in everything from shampoo to biscuits.

      I don't think many people are aware of the scale and the horror of this problem as the west demand more and more mass produced food it is leading to the death of an estimated 5000 orang-utans in Malaysia and also in Indonesia. These areas are losing vast tracts of rain forest through burning programmes, and in the process of this roads which are built to the plantations allow the entry of poachers into areas of the jungle not normally possible, and the horrific result of this is that they kill the mothers and go on to sell the babies as pets to families in Asia. It is so important to seek out products which do not have any part to play in this, as we are gobbling our way through so much palm oil now that indirectly we could be fuelling this dreadful, dreadful state of affairs.

      This ethical spread is a must for all peanut butter lovers, and I can recommend it wholeheartedly to you as a decadent topping for all manner of things, from currant buns to doorsteps of toast!
