While the E-IDE chip only provides for the right signal editing on the motherboard (the actual controller is integrated into the drive electronics), the CPU of the computer is more stretched. With SCSI, the hostadapter takes over these management tasks. E-IDE can only process one I/O enquiry at a time, SCSI can process more. The SCSI bus stays vacant until a device wants to exchange a command, data or a status. During the internal processing of commands, the device releases the bus for other devices. Some can even accept several commands and change their order (Command Queuing). The E-IDE bus, however, is blocked until the hard disk has found and transferred the data sought.
