Advantages: Good Engineering department.

Disadvantages: First year is boring.

I'm a 2nd year student at Cardiff Uni, studying architectural engineering.

The first year and a half are very scientific and theory oriented. It is very dull, and of course very difficult. You have to like what you do to get passing grades.

The first semester, the archis and the civils are together most of the time. There is only one module that is different. Then the seperation between archi and civil is more obvious.

As a second year archi student, we have a project to do from nothing. It's basically coming up with your own ideas and own design, and applying it to the "real life" (we don't actually build a building).

We had to design a house for the first year, but now it's a public building and space, orientation and all those things have to be thought of.

From now on we'll have more designing to do and that's what the course is all about. The first year is more theory to make sure the building stands up, the second year and other years is still theory, but much more practicing by creating your building.
