Automotive and Aeronautical Engineering at Loughborough -of which I attend the surface-travel variety.
I am still currently in the first year of a Masters Course in Automotive Engineering, which according to many sources around is the hardest course here at Loughborough -oh good!
The university itself is great, but if you want to know about that, read a review on it. The department is well-funded due to large research interests. Most tutors are involved in a form of research (alot of which seems to be with Ford).
The course itself is hard, and many hours of work are required to at least scrape through.
The year is made up of two semesters, with module exams at the end of each semester. In the first semester, I had 3 exams, in this, the second, I have 4. As far as I gather, that is about par for the rest of the course. With the project in the final year. The cousre is accredited with IMechE and eventually leads to membership of the IMechE, if a year in industry is taken, this could lead to a Diploma in Industrial Studies(DIS), on top of the degree qualification. There is no further entry requirement to do the year in industry.
In the first year, modules are mainly fundamentals:thermodynamics/ statics/ dynamics/ electro-technology/ maths. However, there are a couple of vehicle-based courses which are quite ranging in content, and include engineering drawing/ stripping engines/ AutoCAD and other more exciting stuff. Course socials are few and far between currently, however everybody knows everybody, even though we have one of the largest subscriptions here. In later years there is an option for different modules should you wish to do various other stuff.
The tutors are mainly of foreign-orientation which can be a disadvantage in terms of understanding, however, they are very dedicated and will normally be on hand to help with any problems.
I would recommend this course to anyone dedicated to the automotive indu
stry. However, without something to keep the interest, this may be a hard course to pursue. Good Luck.
Anyway, I have just found out that only 30% of applicants pass my course so I'm off to revise for my exams
Any constructive comments/advice/requests, leave us a comment. Cheers geeza
