Newest Review: ... Age of the Sophists", and Greek culture was explained to us from this period. We had lectures on Greek art and archaeology in this period, on their democracy, on military events, on life in general and we studied some comedy, tragedy and philosophy from this period. The second semester had a similar format, although we studied Imperial Rome in the period from Nero to Trajan. The Level 1 Classics course was a bit of a mixed bag, which I think was partly what made it so enjoyable. When I first applied to Glasgow University, I wasn't even particularly sure what Classics was, but ended up picking it as a subject to fill up my timetable, nevertheless. I was apprehensive, to say the least, expecting that previous knowledge would be expected, and anything I knew about Classics could be written on the back of a postage stamp. However, I've just finished first year, and was very impressed with Classics and the Classics department and hope to continue to do Classics to Honours.
