Classics At University of NottinghamNewest Review: ... selection of my favourite modules over the three years: Classics and Popular Culture - This took a look at the modern use of the Ancient world, looking at the influence Classics has had on film, modern art and music. For the assessment we had to write a 2,000 word essay - for mine I compared the character of Hector from the Iliad to his presentation in a feminist novel and the film 'Troy'. Ancient Greek - I took up this language on a whim but it ended up being my favourite module. It is pretty hard-going - there is loads of homework and 4 seminars per week (most modules are only one a week), but you get a real sense of satisfaction going ... more |

Within the Classics department at Nottingham there are several different courses. Pure Classics is for the hardcore fans of all things old - it involves a compulsory taking of Latin and Ancient Greek. Ancient History is the more politics based version, and then there is Classical Civilization (which I took) which gives an all-rounded approach to the study of Classics. * Modules There is a vast amount of modules to pick from within the Classics department, the percentage of which are compulsory will vary depending on your course, (about 40% of my modules were compulsory).
