Advantages: Dedicated staff, Excellent facilities, surroundings

Disadvantages: No facilities for smokers

As a former and present student of the University of Sunderland I would recommend this University to any one wishing to study computing, languages, business or education courses. I found the facilities at Sunderland excellent in every department I encountered. My only gripe was that smokers had to stand outside rain or shine.

I returned to education at the age of 40 after leaving school at the age of 16 with no qualifications at all. Through their foundation year franchised to my local college East Durham and Houghall Community College I gained the marks required to enable me to enter the Business Computing Course.

During my time on this course I was given support and assistance whenever I needed it and also encouraged to think and learn for myself. The computing resources are available 24 hours a day; the lecturers are available by appointment whenever they are needed (during work hours). on several occasions during my course lecturers put on extra sessions in their own time for modules students were finding difficult.

There was a module that had two lectures cancelled due to illness but these were made up and an extra workshop session thrown in. I was encouraged to stretch myself and took up German, where once again the attitude of lecturers and facilities were excellent.

I found the work hard but rewarding and received nothing but encouragement and support from academic staff, administration staff, and the student union. I gained a 1st class honours degree and have now returned to the school of education on a MA in Post 16 Education.

The campus is located by the river in one of the most serene locations in Sunderland next door to the Glass Centre and forms part of the heritage trail, well worth walking along.

It was the dedication, enthusiasm and commitment of the staff at the University of Sunderland that awakened my interest in education and set me off on a career that I thoroughly enjoy. once again I w
ould recommend the University of Sunderland to any one looking for a university that offers excellent facilities combined with dedicated and enthusiastic staff.
