Advantages: Well respected in the industry, Bristol Uni is lovely in all other respects, Challenging
Disadvantages: Bad lecturers, Uninspiring lectures
Firstly a disclaimer - I studied Aero Eng at Bristol from 1994 - 1998. We were the first year to do the course over a mandatory 4 years, previously there had been a choice of 3 years with or without an extra year in Europe leading to either an MEng or BEng respectively. We could choose 4 years in Bristol or 3 + 1 abroad, both leading to an MEng.
I am proud to say I have mine, a 2:i. What I am not proud of is I've got to say that a lot of the course was terrible.
I really enjoyed the first year. It was interesting, I was motivated, it was extremely well arranged with later courses drawing on subjects from earlier in the year etc. Had I hated the first year like I did the second I would've bailed out and changed course.
Many of the lecturers were uninspiring, and it appeared they were there for the prestige of their research (which is good at Bristol) but they had to teach as well. So many times we were just handed notes for the lecture, which were then basically read to us. As a result of this so many of us didn't go for a few weeks so we could do coursework instead. This course had a reputation of being the 2nd hardest in the uni (after vets) after all.
I'm not willing to name anyone. They weren't all bad though, there were some very enthusiastic lecturers there with their own inimitable styles. Nor was everyone on the course disappointed. But a lot of us have nothing to do with Engineering now.
I don't have any hard feelings about it, honestly. I'm just glad I didn't pay tuition fees to do it. And of course I graduated 3 years ago, and I think things have changed a lot since then. If you think you want to do Aero Eng then go to Bristol as it has a great reputation in the industry, but I suggest you try to talk to representative students first. With a bit of luck some will post their opinions on here - I'd like to read them in the hope things have got better. If once you're there yo
u have any doubts you've made the right decision, I say change course - it doesn't get any better.
