Advantages: Continental Europe Study Option

Disadvantages: Halls of residence far from faculty

I started at Bristol in September 2009. I am in my first year studying for a MEng in Civil Engineering with Study in Continental Europe. I chose Bristol because it has a good academic reputation and I liked the city when I came for the open day.

Since I arrived here the faculty of engineering has impressed me greatly. The 'pastoral care' system seems to work very well. We are allocated a tutor who is responsible for about 6 people and I have already been given a lot of great useful advice from him.

The way things work at university is very different from school and this was initially somewhat daunting. However, with a good amount of encouragement from lecturers the transition from a school like environment to a lecture based environment is very easy.

The courses within the faculty vary but they all follow similar structures. I took the option of studying a foreign language (French - but Spanish, Italian, German, Japanese, and I think chinese are also possible) with the aim of spending the 3rd year of my 4 year course in Grenoble, France. This is a great opportunity to get more than just a civil engineering qualification out of my degree (hopefully I will be fluent in french by the end of the 3rd year).

Bristol is tuning out to be a really good city to live in. Compared to my home town of London, Bristol is pretty small but there is plenty to do in the small amounts of free time that I have between studying and all the extra curricular activities like sport and music.

Summary: It was a good choice.
