Having just graduated from Bristol in mathematics I can thoroughly recommend the course. Although the first year is relatively simple in content, it is designed to give you a well balanced background in a broad range of subjects. This is essential for making informed choices about units to take in subsequent years. There is a lot of contact with staff during this time as well, which provides sometimes necessary explanations of the ideas produced during lectures. However there are no choices during this year, you must do the courses which are set. The second and third years are where the more exciting courses take place and the level of work needed outside lectures increases accordingly, especially in the third year where it is essential to learn the courses progressively. It isn't an easy ride unless you have a supreme ability in mathematics, but if you are prepared to put the work in, then you will pleasantly find that you are rewarded. On the whole the lecturers are very good and more than sufficiently motivated during their lectures. A very good part of the course is the opportunity to spend a third of your time during the second and third years on subjects outside mathematics which I found essential to remind me why I did mathematics in the first place.
