I know that in spite of Thomas Aquinas writing five "proofs" of the existence of God the evidence is far from compelling. I know that Austin and Strawson had a debate in analytic philosophy that spilled into numerous journal articles from each over a period of years, lasting till one of them died and the other claimed victory (I'm not telling you which; look it up!). Doing a degree in philosophy isn't an easy option in spite of what you might think - it really isn't all sitting about talking about what it all really means, man. People are always asking me who my favourite philosopher is, and it's such a bizarre question that I never know how to answer. I studied philosophy for ten years, and the thing I know most clearly is how little I've managed to learn in that time - there's an infinite variety of things out there. I know that Descartes wrote the Meditations, in which he imagined how it would be if he claimed to know absolutely nothing and built up the world again around him from his position of absolute scepticism. I'm merely studying my second year of Philosophy - so the conclusions I've made haven't had long to ferment. Bear that in mind when comparing my views to those of ancient Philosophy lecturers in University Prospectus. Well what is it? I'll tell you what it is - it's so incredibly broad that I could never even begin to tell you what it's about. Any fundamental question, any age-old problem - there will be thousands of Philosophers, nearly all dead, who will have devoted their entire lives to writing about it.
