Advantages: up to date info and research, good lecturer-student relationships, good reputation

Disadvantages: very popular so classes are getting bigger

Want a great psychology degree, then come on down to Plymouth! Plymouth has an excellent reputation in the field of psychology and I am extremely happy with the degree that I obtained from this departmentseeing it as far superior to those obtained at different universities by other friends. Having since attended 2 other educational establishments, both being better thought of generally than plymouth, I feel that I am in a good position to be objective about the course and department. The course can be 3 or 4 years if you chose to do an industrial placement, which many people do chose to do in clinical or forensic psychology, although there are many options. The course also has many others that it can be combined with if you don't want to do a pure psychology degree, for instance criminal justice, sociology or languages. There are many possibilities and lots of variety which is always a bonus.

The department is on 2 floors of the science building and there is a good range of pc's and other information sources such as an information room with copiers and journals as well as filing cabinets in which staff put articles and papers relevent to the courses for students ease of access. There are also career sections and all past dissertations which are useful.

What I particularly liked about the psychology course was the good relationships that developed between staff and students. Staff always made time to discuss issues and in many cases were quite good at remembering names and faces (which in many educational establishments does not happen!)

The course provides an excellent grounding in all areas of psychology, although the departments major areas of research lie in the field of cognition and this is reflected in the options available. One thing that has been especially important to me in my present career is the strong grounding that i recieved in research methods and statistics. Believe me these are my least favourite topics and i w
ould have happily never studied them, but the lecturing staff are young and take an interesting approach to what i imagine is a tough subject to teach, combining lectures with workshops and practicals.

I really have very little bad to say about the course as i have recieved a better education in the subject than other friends at different universities and i recommend to anyone wanting to study psychology to think about Plymouth.
