T171 You, Your Computer and the NetNewest Review: ... help group. You do spend a lot of time online - although you can minimse this as the OU does provide a lot of material that can be downloaded and worked on offline. But then you do miss the chat in the conferences and so a lot of the more helpful 'hints' if you don't take part. I have already learnt a lot more than I thought I would, and am a more confident computer user. I would recommend the OU to anyone who has got the motivation and the ability to find the time to study. Update July 01 I am now into the final stretch of the course and feel better placed to comment on the material so far. The first part of the course wa... more |

I am now a third of the way through this course. I never realised that I would find it so enjoyable. I have done evening classes and correspondance courses in the past, but this beats them hands down. I don't know whether it is the people on the course - but everyone is so friendly and helpful, it is like being in a real class - despite the fact that most of you will never meet face- to -face. I have also been lucky with my tutor group - there are 12 of us - we have decided to meet up - organised by ourselves - and form a self help group. Iam currently two thirds of the way through this coarse. The description lamorna gave of the coarse was 100% accurate but I do not agree with her opinion of the online work. Our class only has seven students and seem to be working on our own a lot. Mabye our group just don't have a lot to talk about ( i find the group very quiet sometimes and as this is the first time i have done any computer work i find it a little daunting ), some are doing other courses at the same time but at the same time I feel a great deal of achievment when I complete an assignment and would recommend this course to anyone who would like to start a career in computing. ... Having never had any formal qualifications apart from the University of Chaos, I decided to take the plunge last year and do a Level 1 Open University course, You,Your Computer and the Net..T171. I'd had a computer for less than a year, had taught myself, had gone as far as I could on my own and needed to go further. What an experience. T171 is an online course done entirely on the net. Nine thousand registered for it. We were put into groups of twenty, each group having it's own tutor. We have a virtual campus with everything from a Steam Room, Log Inn Bar, Conferences, live online chat rooms, Cafes, Support, in fact everything a 'real' ... Read the complete review

You, Your Computer and the Net a foundation course in its first year, last year was a trial run, and this year it was over subscribed, they had to create a second intake. I haven't studied since 'Careless Whisper' was number 1 so I signed up for this course tentatively. I am now two thirds of the way through and have pleasantly surprised myself with my assignment results so far. The title explains the course well, the first part revolves around emailing and conferencing techniques and netiquette, while also introducing you to reading and notetaking skills, and get a good understanding of your PC. The second stage is an indepth look at the ... Read the complete review
