Advantages: online support, material, 24 hour access

Disadvantages: need free internet access if possible

I am now a third of the way through this course. I never realised that I would find it so enjoyable.

I have done evening classes and correspondance courses in the past, but this beats them hands down. I don't know whether it is the people on the course - but everyone is so friendly and helpful, it is like being in a real class - despite the fact that most of you will never meet face- to -face.

I have also been lucky with my tutor group - there are 12 of us - we have decided to meet up - organised by ourselves - and form a self help group.

You do spend a lot of time online - although you can minimse this as the OU does provide a lot of material that can be downloaded and worked on offline. But then you do miss the chat in the conferences and so a lot of the more helpful 'hints' if you don't take part.

I have already learnt a lot more than I thought I would, and am a more confident computer user.

I would recommend the OU to anyone who has got the motivation and the ability to find the time to study.

Update July 01

I am now into the final stretch of the course and feel better placed to comment on the material so far.

The first part of the course was more of a familiarisation of your computer and a hands on tutorial of how to build a website. This was extremely enjoyable and the assignment for that module was to build a webpage. Considering i had no experience of this previously, I was found the material easy to follow and the support excellent.

The second part of the course dealt with the history of the development of the PC. For those that were expecting a techie based course I think they were a bit disappointed, as it was definately more of a history lesson - although I have to say it was very interesting. The assignment for this section was another, slightly more complicated web page relating to the history of the PC.

I do have to say that although I am r
eally enjoying this course - our group is now down to 6 - so with a 50 % drop out rate, not everyone is either enjoying it or has the time to devote to it.

I would still recommend it, and am still learning more and more each day!
