Advantages: Learning new skills.

Disadvantages: None so far.

You, Your Computer and the Net a foundation course in its first year, last year was a trial run, and this year it was over subscribed, they had to create a second intake.
I haven't studied since 'Careless Whisper' was number 1 so I signed up for this course tentatively. I am now two thirds of the way through and have pleasantly surprised myself with my assignment results so far.
The title explains the course well, the first part revolves around emailing and conferencing techniques and netiquette, while also introducing you to reading and notetaking skills, and get a good understanding of your PC.
The second stage is an indepth look at the development of software and the Personal computer, IBM, Apple and Microsofts, and other companies involvement in the process.
Having got this far and just staring the third module about the History of the Internet and where it is going, I can see why study can become an obsession. Since February I have learnt a little HTML (not really required within the course but its there if you want to) created a web channel, and discovered I can write a decent essay. Aside from that the self discipline required for distance learning is a new skill intself.
This course is described as ideal for beginners, and many of my fellow students are quite techie minded and have found most of it plain sailing, even too easy some report. However I wouldn't advise a complete newbie to start here, although there plenty of prepartion materials, a little experience of computing is definetly beneficial.
The course cost £195 last year, I believe it is around £200 now. I stated in February and the course finishes in October, worth considering if you want to return to study and want to know more about these piles of microchips and plastic.

I've signed up for this course and start next month. It's all very exciting :-) (I already have ten years of computer experience, including building two machines for our family) so I'm hoping that it will be reasonably straightforward for me.

Careless Whisper? Good grief! You're a brilliant advert for this, I've got to have a go!
