Having never had any formal qualifications apart from the University of Chaos, I decided to take the plunge last year and do a Level 1 Open University course, You,Your Computer and the Net..T171. I'd had a computer for less than a year, had taught myself, had gone as far as I could on my own and needed to go further. What an experience.

T171 is an online course done entirely on the net. Nine thousand registered for it. We were put into groups of twenty, each group having it's own tutor. We have a virtual campus with everything from a Steam Room, Log Inn Bar, Conferences,live online chat rooms, Cafes, Support, in fact everything a 'real' University has.

We have a Website where all our work and assignments are published for us to download. The course is split into Modules, each one having a Tutor Marked Assignment at the end. We submit our TMAs back into the website for our tutor to pick up electronically. There's no final exam as such, but an End Of Course Assessment which is marked as an exam, and has to be treated as such.

There is quite a large amount of group work involved, all online, we never meet.I wasn't looking forward to this, in fact I coudn't see how it could work, but it's phenominal. My particular group worked together to produce a Group Website. It was damned hard, but we did it. Studying online with the Open University is something worth thinking about. Take the plunge and do it! The cost was £195.00 but we all get a tax rebate of about £45.00. Go to their website and have a browse at the courses available. I've sign
ed up for another level 2 course next year. It's an addiction!
