“ Brand: Boots / Type: Sun Lotion / Subcategory: Body Lotion / Suitable for: Body / Contents: 250ml „
After reading a lot about the various gradual tanning products available I decided to try Boots own version as it was only £2.50 for a 250ml bottle. It comes in light or medium, so you choose based on what your skin tone is like. I have a medium toned olive skin so I went with the medium one.
It's a body moisturiser with a small amount of tanning agent added, so that when used regularly it will build up a subtle natural looking tan as well as keeping your skin perfectly moisturised. It has cocoa butter and vitamin E to smooth and moisturise. It's suitable for all skin types.
It comes in a pale yellow bottle with a flip lid. The lotion is white and it's very runny, much more so than I expected. It smells quite nice, not too strong or overpowering. It goes on easily and because it's so runny it spreads easily over the skin making a little go a fairly long way.
It sinks in quite easily and quickly, but it does leave my skin feeling a little sticky for a while after using it, and the scent seems to get stronger once it's on my skin. The smell gets worse throughout the day but not to the point where it's really strong and I notice it all the time. My skin feels ok after using it, but it doesn't feel particularly moisturised so I wouldn't use this instead of my normal body lotion.
I used this on my legs every day for a week and there was no difference in the colour whatsoever. I carried on using it for the next few weeks just to use up the bottle, and still there was no change in colour at all. So obviously I was not impressed with the performance of this lotion, and I would not buy it again.
It would be much better if they did a dark shade as well, maybe if they did then that would have actually had an effect on my skin, even though my skin really isn't that dark, but as it is there's only the light or medium to choose from.
When I go into any Boots store I find it pretty much impossible to come out empty handed, even if Im just accompanying a friend whos after a certain product. There seems to be something about the whole atmosphere which draws my hands to pick up various products and before I even know it Ive got a basket in one hand containing at least 3 or 4 items that I really cant justify buying no matter how hard I try. On a recent visit to Boots I found myself in the same predicament and ended up returning home with Boots Holiday Glow body lotion to try out.
Im a big lover of tanning products, especially the ones which involve creating a natural tan without exposing myself to the harmful factors of a sun bed. Im pretty much an expert really and have tried the majority of the self tan products out there, from Johnsons to the more expensive St Tropez. Now from my past experience these products tend to range from around the £4 mark for a small bottle of a high street brand tanning product to the regions of £30 for a more exclusive brand. The thing that caught my eye about the Boots product was that it was only £2.65 for a 250ml bottle which is the average sized bottle for these products. It does normally cost £3.99 however for about the past month it has had a third off the price.
The bottle itself isnt really anything special and does look slightly tacky in a sense, its a golden / yellow colour which almost resembles a peach type of colour and the information is portrayed in either a blue or gold colour. It does look as though it is quite cheap and not really quite as classy as some of the higher end products although at the end of the day I wasnt paying for the packaging was I!
The actual lotion is white in colour as most self tanning agents seem to be, not really ideal as you cant see where youve applied the product to although Im not a big lover of the dark brown St Tropez lotion that seems impossible to blend in! The smell actually reminds me exactly of Soltan sun screen lotion which is quite odd, there are hints of self tanning agents that seem to be present in Johnsons, Dove, etc. products as well. Its quite thin in consistency, probably the same amount of runniness as sun screen has.
The directions on the bottle recommend that you simply apply the product daily to build up a natural tan which is what I did for three days to see the overall result clearly. The product is absorbed really easily and leaves a lovely soft feel to your skin, more so than most of the other self tanning products Ive tried in the past. It takes only about 5 minutes for the product to completely dry on your skin and theres no greasiness whatsoever.
The first thing I noticed that that the product didnt stain my clothes, very often I find that when wearing white self tan products will effectively tan your clothes as well but luckily not with this one! I applied this over three days, each time before bed and I let it thoroughly soak into my skin before putting any clothes back on. As for the results well
Day 1 I woke with lightly fragranced skin which made me think of summer and I must admit I was dubious about turning the light on however I neednt have been at all. My skin had a really subtle golden glow and absolutely no streaks to be found anywhere!
Day 2 After the surprising results of the morning I opted to apply the product for a second night as I always find the effect is better and more noticeable after two or three applications. I awoke the next morning with soft, golden skin which had a wonderful natural golden glow to it.
Day 3 Getting a bit brave now I applied the product a third time and awake the next morning to quite a deep golden tan which looked completely natural, my mum actually commented that it looked like Ive been on the sun bed or in the sun for a day or two!
After that I stopped applying the product at risk of turning orange! The effect lasted perfectly for a good three days before it started to flake off slightly and look a tiny bit patchy when close up. I exfoliated my skin fully on the third night of no application and it all came off quite easily really.
I wouldnt hesitate to recommend this product to you, I bought it in the light shade but its also available in medium as well. If youre quite pale Id recommend the light shade but if you want a more intense glow Id go for the medium one which Im going to buy next time Im in Boots. The price is an absolute bargain at the moment and easily makes this the cheapest self tan product that actually produces good results on the market at present. I think after taking the price into consideration, this product is the best one thats out there at the minute it does what it promises and creates a natural, streak-free tan so get buying it!
