Most of us love the sun shine and being fair skinned and having children sun cream is an absolute must.
Sun cream absorbs or reflects the suns ultra violet radiation (UV-B), therefore preventing sun burn and aids the prevention of the development of squamous and basal cell carcinoma. Sun cream is also believed to slow down wrinkles and sagging skin.
The SPF or sun protection factor of a sunscreen is measurement of the effectiveness of sunscreen. By choosing a high SPF, you get more protection a sunscreen offers against UV-B. Being fair skinned I burn easily and tend to choose a really high SPF and reapply frequently, whereas my husband tans easily without burning and tends to start much lower of the spectrum. My children vary but generally more like my husband, however have the same SPF as myself. It was over 40 in Turkey so I started on 40 and gradually moved to 20 by the end of the 2nd week!
So whilst getting ready for my holidays, as always I purchased a whole range of products, running from 40, 20, 15, 10, 8 and 6. I chose Calypso this year as I have used in the past and could be picked up quite reasonably at my local Home bargains from between £3 to £7 depending on the SPF. I particular like the fact that most of the range comes in once a day format. This means that I am confident that once everyone has applied cream / lotion in the morning, they are okay for the day. The exception being that on the first few days of the holiday I still encourage reapplication half way through the day but think this was me being over vigilant as we didn't burn.
I find the higher SPF 40 is a much thicker cream and both my middle daughter and myself found that if put on our faces it made our eyes run, especially once we'd swam, whereas the other creams / lotions where fine. It was also difficult to remove the last bits from the container and being a super scrimper I ended up cutting the end off with scissors in order to use. The PG 20 lotion was my favourite for ease of application, as was an oily liquid that was quick and easy to apply. The lower SPF's were in a lotion type container and were more creamy but not as thick as the SPF 40 and therefore easier to apply.
I think the once a day products are great, especially for those with young children when applying sun cream could be a battle.
Im scoring the creams a 4 Doo Yoo and would recommend.
Calypso Once A Day Sun Lotion
I bought this from one of the bargain stores like B&M and honestly cannot remember how much I paid but think it might be around £7.
The difference between this and any other sun screen is that this is applied but once a day. They say you should apply it 45 minutes before going out in the sun. I was intrigued, slightly skeptical but thought it was worth having a try.
This sun screen comes in a plastic bottle with a screw top lid. The hole in the inner lid was quite large but there was no spray or anything, you just poured the liquid out of this hole. The contents were pretty liquid and not creamy. They were kind of viscous so thicker than water but pretty liquid. The liquid is completely clear ans smells sort of alcohol - like. A bit like surgical spirit in my opinion.
The sunscreen container holds 200ml of product and is factor 20 protection which suits my husband and I as neither of us burn easily. I also thought that this would give a good base protection and if we needed more because we were going to be out in the sun for some time then I could add another higher factor on top.
I bought this for our last two holidays and the most recent was our sailing trip around the Galapagos islands. Bear in mind we were at sea so this makes the sun more fierce so it was important to be protected at all times.
We applied this after our morning shower each day. It is a bit like alcohol in that it evapourates quickly. I found I needed to spread it fairly quickly and evenly and after a few seconds it was completely absorbed into my skin. There was no evidence at all except a slight aroma which also faded after a while. No one would have guessed we had any sunscreen on . The other thing I liked is that it didn't make my eyes run and sting as some sun screens do.
It worked. We walked for hours on our island hikes. We wore short sleeved T shirts and hats but no other sun screen and neither of us ever got burned the entire holiday. If we went snorkeling I did put extra sun screen of a higher factor on my shoulders and back as that would be exposed when snorkeling.
I am not sure whether this was necessary but I took precautions as I didn't fancy getting burnt. After snorkelling we had another shower and I washed my hair so if we went out for another hike or doing anything out in the sun I re applied the Once a day. I couldn't expect it to work after swimming in the sea for over an hour and a shower using shampoo and shower gel; that would be expecting far too much.
This would be perfect for using on children before they head off to school for the day as it would last them all through the day. My grandsons now have this applied as I have told my step daughter about this. Test it first as my grand daughter and other step daughter are allergic to something in it and it gives them eczema so be wary if you suffer from sensitive skin. Maybe check the ingredients if you know what you might be allergic to.
I would certainly buy this again as it is not greasy, there is no danger of it marking clothes. It gives a good basic protection and good enough for my husband and I for most situations. It has no smell and absorbs completely leaving no gresy feel or smell. I also like the fact it goes into the skin rather than sitting on top so it doesn't get into my eyes when they water as they always do in bright sunlight.
This stuff works but binding with the skin to form the protective layer rather than sitting on top as a layer which can be rubbed, washed or sweated off. It provides protection from UBV and UVA rays. It does say keep away from your eyes and rinse well with water if you get any in your eyes but I found I could apply this to my face keeping it away from my eyes and kept my eyes closed and once it had sunk in it didn't run with any tears or watering eyes.
The container does say keep away from children but I would not get children to apply their own sunscreen anyway.
This is also made in Manchester which is good as I like to support British companies if I can.
I was favourably surprised and impressed with this product and have recommended it to a number of my friends. It makes it so much easier to apply only once a day. I have even used it in this country in the last few weeks because of this fabulous weather we have been enjoying. We apply this in the morning then when we are out and about gardening and doing DIY outside we are fully protected. My husband plays golf twice a week and uses this to protect his arms and face while out on the course.
I would recommend trying this. Test a small patch first just in case but if you have no reaction I am sure you will find it really efficient.

I really like using P20 when on holiday as I like the fact that I can just put some on the morning and be fully protected for the whole day. My one bog problem with P20 is that I think it is far too expensive for a bottle. I saw this in Tesco and it seemed to be pretty much the same product but at a fraction of the price. I was a little bit wary at trying it as sun protection is something that I don't think people should be scrimping on but I went home and read a few reviews and people seemed to really like it so I decided to go back and buy myself some for my holiday to Greece.
I paid £7.50 for a 200ml bottle of SPF 30. It was also available in SPF's of 20 and 40. The equivalent size of bottle that the P20 was selling for was £20 so it was a significant saving.
Just to make sure I also bought myself some regular sunscreen just in case I found this not to be very good so that I could add some extra to me to give me a little bit more protection if and when I might need it.
I have to say that I was really impressed with the Calypso and it performed even better than I had hoped that it would and in my opinion it was as easily as good as the P20 is.
The lotion is a sort of thin gel like liquid that was really easy to spread across my skin. The instructions state that it should be applied all over and then within 15 minutes the sun protection will be fully active and it will offer protection all day long (approx. 6 hours).
I really liked the feel of this on my skin. It wasn't heavy and it also wasn't sticky feeling so I didn't need to worry about getting to the beach and having sand stuck all over my skin.
It actually felt a little bit weird to begin with as after it had absorbed I felt like I wasn't even wearing anything on my skin and I am used to constantly reapplying sunscreen whenever I am at the beach. I did have my other bottle of lotion with me for if I felt like my skin was getting a little bit red and stingy but this was only needed a couple of times and it was on places where I actually don't think I applied the calypso that well such as behind my ears and on my temples.
I was really nervous the first time that I used this as I had convinced myself it wasn't going to be that good but I really did find it to be excellent and a fantastic buy for the money. I didn't burn once but I still ended up with a nice tan. My tan wasn't as dark as it might have been had I used a lower factor sun cream but it was definitely noticeable and considering that I was completely protected from burning the tan I got was quite good.
The one thing that I was worried about was swimming in the sea. I worried that this would wash off and I would need to reapply and as I swim in the sea quite a lot when at the beach I thought if it washed off then I might as well have just bought myself a normal sunscreen and applied it ever hour. I needn't have worried about the water washing it off as it was very resistant. The bottle did say it was resistant to water but I was dubious. When I went swimming I made sure to not towel dry and just allowed myself to dry off in the sun and I waited to see if I would start to feel like I was burning but it was very resistant and even swimming several times didn't seem to affect its potency. I'm not sure what towel drying would do but if it is sunny there is no need really as I dried off quickly in the sun.
I also used it for when I was sightseeing and this is really where I thought it was invaluable as I always seem to end up getting burnt when walking around. Probably because I don't reapply sunscreen as much as I do when I am on the beach but again I didn't burn so I actually have some pictures from my trip where I am not walking around with a big red face.
The bottle doesn't look very big and when I first used it I thought there was no way that it was going to last me for a week but it was really surprising how little was actually needed to cover my whole body and I really did think it was even better value for money when I realised that one bottle would last the week no problem.
I am going to buy some more of this in a lower SPF for being in the UK as I am quite sensitive to the sun so I am going to start wearing this on my face every day so that I can be assured that I will not get burnt. With the great British weather it is hard to be prepared and I can go up town to meet fiends in the morning and it can be raining and a couple of hours later the sun can be blazing down but if I am wearing this at least I know I will be protected no matter the weather and I won't have to lug sunscreen around with me all the time.
I know it isn't fair to keep comparing similar products but I feel I have to with this as it is so similar to P20 but I will definitely now be buying this instead from now on due to how much better value for money it is compared to P20. It is just as effective but it is such a fantastic price and I think it was worth every penny and I would even have been happy to have paid some more for it. Buy this with confidence and don't be put off with the fact that it is a budget product as it is just as good (and better than some) as the more expensive once a days.
Calypso Once A Day was my sun screen of choice on my recent holiday to Gran Ganaria. I like the freedom of only having to apply my sun protection once a day and not to have to keep reapplying constantly. I chose this one on this holiday as it was slightly cheaper than the P20 I have used before a 100ml of this cost me £6.99 from Home Bargains. It is also available in 200ml.
The packaging is quite simple it comes in a white bottle with basic writing on it and the one I had was a factor 20 though it is also available in factor 40. The temperature in Gran Canaria was 25-30 degrees whilst I was there so it was nice and warm.
The instructions are included within the packaging and for the first application you are advised to let the solution soak into your skin for an hour and then reapply again there are alot of other instructions but I will tell you how I used it as it is my experience after all.
On unscrewing the lid you find a small stopper with a hole in it like a vinegar bottle stopper here is where the liquid is released and it really is a liquid it is not like a lotion. To use I poured the liquid into my cupped hand and then rubbed into my skin I applied before I left the room for breakfast at around 8.30am so it had plenty of time to bond with my skin before the sun bathing began and that was it done for the day. It says it takes around 45 minutes to activate. The usual rules apply about coming out of the sun in main times I will be honest I don't follow these rules which is bad of me but I like to get a tan. Now my boyfriend kept telling me if I used this I was not going to get a tan he has skin which means he can just use carrot oil and will not burn I however will so I stuck to my guns and carried on with this and you know what by the end of my holiday he actually said 'I think you have the best tan you ever had from any of our holidays' and we have been abroad about 8 times so it is definatley good stuff.
We also like going on walks on holidays and again I did not have to worry about carting around a big bottle of sun cream with me everytime we went out for the day.
I give this sun screen 5 stars because it is so easy to use even getting in and out of the pool is not a problem you can do it without reaching for the sun screen the second you have dried of as it is water resistant. The only thing I will say is be careful when you put it on your face as if you get it in your eyes it does sting and it also has quite a strong chemical smell when you apply so be careful around your nose as well but apart from those things it is excellent and I will definatley be taking it on my next holiday. No burning just a lovely tan.
Be aware it can stain some clothing so let it dry before putting your clothes on.

I bought this for around five pounds at an Asda promotion, wondering if the product would really work given the low price. Having just returned from a 10-day holiday in the sun, I can now confirm that the Once A Day lotion really does what it promises. I applied the lotion every morning before going out - didn't top up - and didn't get burned at all.
Well, apart from a few areas that I'd obviously not put the lotion on at all. That is a slight problem as what's described as 'lotion' is actually a transparent liquid that is obviously high in alcohol content; it has a strong smell and evaporates almost instantly on application to the skin. After the first day or two, however, I found I knew how much to use and to be careful in making sure all my skin was covered.
As I say, I was very pleased, and actually rather surprised, that the liquid worked so well. I've been burnt in the past (and I don't burn especially easily) in similar weather when using traditional sun creams at factor 30 and applying regularly. The Calypso product allowed me to only undergo the annoying routine of smearing on sun protection once a day and then feel free to enjoy the sun without anxiety.
I also found I could put on the lotion and go out into strong sun almost immediately without burning, although the instructions clearly state you should wait 45 minutes. I'd recommend following the guidelines obviously, but the efficacy of the lotion was reassuring when time was short.
However, I think it may have worked a little too well. If you aim to get a tan, this product may not be for you as I certainly tanned less than I normally do on holiday - and that's generally using a higher factor product. It all depends on how seriously you take sun protection.
Overall, I was pleased with the lotion and will buy it again. The bottle was the perfect size for a 10-day break and at five pounds very economical. It didn't stain my clothing and was easy to use once I'd applied it once or twice.
Before going on my summer holiday to Cyprus, in August, I had a good look around for sun screens. I eventually bought a variety of sun protectors and aftersuns. I purchased sunscreens from various places trying to get both a good price and good products.
When, in TJ HUghes department store, I saw a sunscreen that I'd not tried before I was quite interested. I had seen a similar type of thing but for about double the price. I'm not sure of the exact price but the Calypso, which I purchased, cost in the region of six pounds for a 200 ml sized bottle.
This sunscreen is called, Calypso Once a Day Sun Lotion. It's sun protection factor is 20. (medium)
What I found interesting about this lotion was the fact that it only needs to be used once a day and it should then provide six hours full protection from the suns rays and therefore, sunburn. I was sceptical, but thought I'd give it a try but also take other sun screens on holiday, just in case it didn't work, and because I knew I would feel that I had to top up throughout the day.
On the first full day of our holiday, both myself and my husband decided it would be best to try this out from the start. We carefully read the instructions and then applied accordingly.
You are instructed to spread this very thin lotion over all skin that will be exposed to the sun during your holiday, and then repeat (for the first time of using) after twenty minutes. It is supposed to provide protection after forty -five minutes. On all following days it should be applied twenty minutes before exposure to the sun, which is about the same as most sun screens. I really didn't have much faith that this would work and took another sunscreen down to the pool.
When applying, this liquid it is thin and runny. It is easy to apply though and as long as you're watching what you're doing it isn't messy. Although the manufacturers claim that this is fragrance free, we thought it had an alcohol smell to it. This soon fades and doesn't leave the skin smelling of chemicals in the least. It is quickly absorbed wthout leaving any noticeable residue. I felt as if this bottle wouldn't last for long but, surprisingly, it did go a long way.
After swimming, and occasionally throught he day I would use sunscreen creams or a spray, but mainly in isolated areas that I felt might be getting over exposed. My husband, however, only used this Once lotion and NO other sunscreens, for the first week and into the second week of our holiday. He did, however, use Malibu dry oil spray on his head as he felt that theOnce A Day could run into his eyes when perspiring under the hot mediterranean sun. He didn't burn and he usually does to some extent, and he says that he feels completely satisfied that Calypso Once A Day provided excellent protection, better than any other screens he had tried in the past. I would agree, but as I've mentioned, I did top this up with other products, just in case, so didn't test this as well as hubby did.
If I'm fortunate enough to go somewhere hot next year, and I'm hoping that I do, then I wouldn't hesitate to take Calypso Once A day in my suitcase. I would probably also take a spray for use on the head.
