When I went on holiday last year it wasn't until I got to the airport that I realised that I didn't have any after sun, so I purchased a bottle of Clinique After Sun Balm with Aloe Vera from the Clinique concession in the duty free area. I paid £9.99 on special offer, I believe the high street price for the 150ml (5oz) tube that I purchased is around £13.
The tube is quite basic and in the familiar light green colouring of the Clinique brand, with a big yellow C and a yellow band stating in white text that it is after sun.
The idea behind after sun is that you use it to soothe skin reddened by the sun. It is not a substitute for a good sun tan lotion - I use a high factor Nivea on my face and a lower factor on the rest, but you can still catch the sun and feel the burn of a bit too much sunshine. Aloe Vera is a well known soothing agent so it's the ideal choice for an after sun lotion.
So, you squeeze out the lotion and it's pretty creamy and not greasy which I like in a cream. It is quite fresh smelling (must be the aloe!) and you only need a fairly small amount, a 10p sized amount is enough for the top of your arm / shoulder area, the same for the neck, legs etc. So I believe that the tube would easily last for the duration of a fortnight's holiday for a couple. As soon as you put it on you can feel it soothing and cooling the area - though as an extra tip I recommend keeping the tube in the fridge, it feels even nicer when it is cold! The after sun sinks in nicely and it provides a lovely soft nourished feel to the skin, and really works to reduce the redness and the burn feeling you get, especially when you have clothing rubbing against your tender bits!
Overall I highly recommend the Clinique After Sun Balm with Aloe Vera, I have used some other (cheaper) after suns which haven't had as good an effect or left my skin feeling as soft and supple as this one does, it also leaves my face feeling soothed, moisturised but not greasy or sticky which is great as you can apply your make up over it.
If you are going on holiday (even if it's not somewhere super hot - I've used this after sun after a day in Blackpool!) then I'd absolutely advise you to have a tube of this on hand to soothe your sunned skin (but prevention is better than cure, use a good sunblock!)
I bought this after sun in duty free whilst going on holiday. I also bought the sun lotion to match! As I am really bad at packing it was my fault for leaving my other sun lotions at home and I had to shell out for expensive sun cream and after sun at the airport, but at the same time it is nice having the Clinique fancy stuff!
My skin is really sensitive so I have to be really careful in the sun and make sure that I apply lots of sun cream, sometimes though, as hard as I try not to, I do get burnt. Because of this I need a good after sun lotion to use.
I really like this after sun. I found that with the added aloe vera in it, it really cools down my skin instantly which is really what I look for in an aftersun. I like something that cools my skin down and refreshes it since my skin gets really hot when its burnt or when I have been in the sun. It also really helps with moisturising my skin so I don't get horrible flaking skin, which is not a good look on holiday (or anytime!) I find that it absorbs in to the skin really quickly and is really effective in cooling burnt areas and moisturising. Another great thing about this lotion is that it is oil free, it is also allergy tested and fragrance free. Since the lotion was really good at soothing it really made me feel more comfortable and reduced and itching the sun caused me. Because the aloe cooled my skin I think that my skin was less red in the long run too.
I really like the design of the tube, it is a mint green colour with a big yellow 'C' on the front of it and then a yellow band across the middle with 'Clinique After Sun' written on it. It has a yellow plastic flip top which really aids with opening and closing the lotion quickly and easily and it saves some mess! (I really prefer flip tops to screw tops)
The after sun has to be used up within 24 months of being opened. I tend only to use after sun if I have spent too much time in the sun and have got a bit red, otherwise I just use my sun cream before going out in the sun. I guess I should get in to the habit of using it every time I go out in hot weather to protect my skin more.. Since I normally only really use this in summer too, I'm not sure whether I will use up the whole tube within 24 months, but I will make the effort since I don't want to throw it away with lotion still in it (maybe it's a good excuse for another holiday..?)
I can't remember how much I paid for this after sun in the duty free but you can buy it from Boots for £11.50, which I don't think is too bad considering you tend to pay quite a lot for a good after sun.
The lotion comes in a 150ml tube. I tend to really smother this on when I use it but I used it last summer and I still have half a tube left, so it has lasted me. But I guess it depends how much you are in the sun and how often you go on holiday!
I highly recommend this. It is not that much more expensive than other after suns and it really did cool down my skin quickly and stop it from flaking. It was a really good buy.
