I have tried many self tanning creams for the face including those that build a gradual tan and those that build a tan in around 2 hours. I decided to invest in Estee Lauder as I had tried the regular sun protection for the face and loved the texture and feel of the cream, it wasn't too greasy as with some other sun lotions. The same can be said for the self tanning cream. It is ungreasy and unscented and feels lovely on. As an alternative to exposing my face to too much sun which would be damaging, I used this on holiday and found that it gave my face a lovely natural looking colour. I used it daily for a week and was left with healthy looking skin and a very healthy natural looking colour. I would recommend this to anyone and will definitely continue to use it both on holiday and at home.
It happens about this time every year... the sun decides to show its face for a couple of days and the country unanimously decides it's now summer and girls all over the country whip out their brightly coloured summer dresses and men lose their tops (of course, this is more welcome in some cases than others - hairy men/ those with beer bellies, please keep those tops on!) Of course, nothing says winter like pale skin, especially against the gorgeous bright summer colours that have filled the shops this summer. Being naturally olive skinned, I find that a lack of sun over the winter can leave me looking decidedly washed out. While most self tanners are too aggressive for use on the face, Estee Lauder's Bronze Goddess Self Tan lotion is specifically designed to be gentle enough to use on the delicate facial skin, while still giving an effective (and safe from nasty aging UV rays) tan.
Estee Lauder claim that this uses "advanced tan perfecting technology" to deliver "your most natural looking colour ever". It contains fruit extract, jasmine and narcissus flower, coconut oil, and the exotic sounding Abricot nectar (yes, abricot, not apricot - apparently it's a top secret exclusive ingredient to Estee Lauder), all of which condition the skin. It's also dermatalogically tested and unlike lots of self-tanners, is non-acnegenic, which means it does not clog oil glands which can cause blemishes.
It is packaged in a 50ml bronzed plastic tube with a flip top lid. Like all Estee Lauder products it looks stylish and expensive and something that will look great sat on your bathroom shelf. As the packaging would suggest, it is indeed expensive, with the 50ml bottle retailing at £19.57. The flip top is a well thought out design for this type of product - it makes it easy to dispense a tiny amount and means that the lotion doesn't get too clogged around the lid which can cause blockages (this happened frequently with their old design for this product - a slit lid which would block and mean the product was then pretty much unusable)
Estee Lauder claim that this has a 'beachy' smell - well, I'd agree in so far as the initial scent smells of coconuts, but the underlying scent is that regular old fake tan smell. Still, it's a scent I can put up with if the product gives a natural looking and even tan.
To apply, you simply apply to clean skin, and I would recommend exfoliating and moisturising before applying to ensure your best chance of an even tan (although I've not had any problems with patchy tanning from this if I've been lazy and not exfoliated). The lotion itself is quite a shockingly vivid brown colour and quite worrying when you first look at it! But the texture is quite thin and it spreads onto the skin really easily and evenly, diluting the colour to a slight golden brown and is easy to see where you have applied it. It is absorbed into the skin really easily and dries within minutes so there's no annoying waiting around. I tend to apply this overnight and let it develop as you couldn't apply makeup over the top of it, but if you were more of a natural girl you could apply in the morning and just go with a slick of lip gloss and mascara and let the lotion do it's stuff! As with all self tanners, it's really important to make sure you wash your hands immediately after apply as it will stain your hands a very obvious orangey colour.
The colour that this gives is great - I get a natural looking and even golden brown from this which develops as promised after an hour. It leaves my skin the exact shade it turns naturally in the sun (I hate self tans which turn me a nasty orange - my skin does not turn orange in the sun!) It's also easy to build up the tan by applying this regularly and deepening the colour. I like the fact that the tan also fades naturally rather than leaves patches of tanned skin left.
I really like this product - it gives me back my natural colour and leaves my complexion looking that little bit more radiant and healthy without any need for exposing myself to the nasty UV rays of a sunbed. The colour is lovely and natural, it leaves the skin healthy and doesn't clog the pores, and the only downsides for me are the fake tan smell (which I can put up with) and the price. However, all of the cheaper facial self-tanners I've tried have been so utterly rubbish that I would rather spend the money on this one, or go without one at all!
