Fake bake is a very popular fake tan brand that is amongst some of the best and can often be used in salons but can be bought in highstreet stores too.
Before you tan you must exfoliate and moisturise, adding Extra moisturiser to elbows, knees and ankles. To apply the tan it's always better to get someone else to apply it but you can manage it yourself apart from the back.
The can should be held 30cm away from the body at all areas and the salon way to apply tan is as follows:
1. Stand legs shoulder width apart and with your arms held out so you are making a T shape but then drop your forearms so your hands are pointed to the floor and your now making a box shape with your arms. ( obviously this cannot be done if applying yourself)
2. Spray the tan 30cm away from you UP and DOWN your shins on both legs then up and down both thighs. Then the same to your tummy, but when you get to your chest and breasts spray from side to side raising yOur head up to look at the ceiling when spraying your neck. This is the front of your body done.
3. For your face do It in three up and down storks one down the side, up the middle, then down the other side of the face again.
4. The back is similar to the front, up and down the legs and up and down the back.
5. Next turn to the side and pretend you are taking one big step with the leg that ISNT facing the person spraying and hold both arms straight out infront of you. Do the arm facing nearest the sprayer by spraying straight along the arm, spray one long stroke down the side of your tummy and down the side of the leg and then spray down the side of the leg that is stepping forward so you are spraying the INSIDE of this leg then repeat on the other side.
6. hold your hands out then spread your fingers like a claw and do one light spray across the fingers. During all this try not to stop an start spraying whilst the spray is directed at the skin as it will cause patches, stop spraying by ending at a place off the body e.g if doing the legs finished in a fast motion pointing away from the leg then stop.
A LITTLE TIP is to get an old towel or something to stand on even in the bath as some spray falls to the floor and if you step in it the bottom Of your feet will turn black!
This is best done in the shower cubicle as the spray is so fine it gets EVERYWHERE!
The tan itself goes on nicely an is already coloured so you can see where you have been but will also develope deeper and darker over a few hours. It will take about 15mins to dry before you can get dressed but it's best to wear loose clothes and no bra as bras can rub it off easily.
The colour comes out a lovely golden brown but can be made darker by adding more layers.
The colour will last about a week before patches will show mainly on the neck, between breasts, around the groin and between the creases in your arms. When this happens if you use a body scrub the tan should come off quite easy, ready to be re applied.
Dependig on how many layers you use at once the tan can last for about 4 or 5 fully body applications.
Overall I love the colour of the tan and I think it's good how it comes off when it needs to as nothing looks worse than a patchy tan that takes ages to stub off.
The only down sides to the product are the price can vary from about £14 to £20 and the spay nozle can often have a build up of product and cause some large brown blobs to be sprayed out mid-tan. And it also gets everywhere so make sure you do it in the shower!
I love having a tan, but hate using sunbeds so I constantly fake it. This product is great at giving you an even, streak free, glowing tan!
HOW I APPLY - With this product (as with the majority of fake tans) it is vital to exfoliate and moisterise before using so that the colour of the tan is even. I usually add extra moisteriser to dry areas of skin such as elbows, knees & ankles to ensure that all of my skin is smooth. Once I am prepared I start applying the tan (i usually do this in the shower as the spray goes absolutely everywhere - not gonna lie it can get messy). I start from the bottom up and apply in even strokes, holding the bottle approx 30cm away. It is easy to see the colour on your skin straight away, (the colour you can see is more or less the same colour it will go), so if it looks too pale for you then add another coat. The colour of the tan really depends on how you apply it. The tan is very easy to apply, the airbrush spray is great for getting a quick tan. I'd say putting the tan on takes about 5-10mins, not long at all.
The tan will dry in no time at all, i usually put a dressing gown on about 10 mins after I have applied the tan. As time goes on, I find that I start to look slightly darker than i'd like to which is why I usually tan before bed so that I can shower it off in the morning. The next day I will wash the tan with water (no soap) in the shower. When I finish & am dry, the tan is the perfect colour for me! No streaks, a lovely golden brown.
I would say the tan lasts about 1 week (if you don't top it up), to keep the tan I would say you would need to tan approx every 3 days. I spray my face with it every other day before bed as the tan seems to come off whilst cleansing.
DISADVANTAGES - The product gets everywhere!!! When I do my tan in the shower, after i'm done the white floor of the shower is completely brown...I find this makes the bottoms of my feet brown as obviously i'm standing on it. (this is easily cleaned with water though). I also find that when I open my bathroom door after tanning, the spray makes my fire alarm go off...none of my other products do that. In addition to this, the product is very expensive for the amount you get....I only get 2 applications in one bottle, and at approx £20 it can get quite expensive. So what I try to do is apply the tan initially and then top it up with another (cheaper) tan.
Overall I love the product as it gives a great tan, lovely golden glow, no streaks and even. BUT it's messy and quite expensive.
.My take on Fake Bake
Fake bake is a great way to cheat a tan, this is the first fake bake product I have used as I usually opt for St Tropez but I needed a quick fix there and then and since Boots were offering a ton of points when you spend over £50, of course, I needed to get my shopping basket filled with £50 worth of goodies!!
The best things about this product in my eyes is the speed, it is literally - lid off, spray - voila! I remember once watching Allan Carr on TV and Cheryl Cole was the guest star looking bronzed as ever, well that was enough, being a tanorexic and feeling extremely pale in comparison I needed a tan, so before my boyfriend knew it I was out of bed and the can was in his hand 'Please will you spray me' and a little flutter of the lashes, poor thing! But I was tanned by the time the adverts were over - and that is my point. It really is a quick fix and I swear by it!
The colour is more of an olive brown than a orang-a-tan! ;) The tan lasts around a week but like any tan it will stick around longer if you maintain it well (using moisturizer daily!) It also comes off very easy with a good exfoliating scrub if you are not impressed!
It is possible to use it yourself but obviously there are hard to reach places (like your back) where you will need a friend/sibling/partner to lend a hand! I also love this product for a last minute spritz before hitting the town!
What's ON & IN the tin
The picture above is actually the old design and they have now come back with a new and improved formula & packaging. They have made it a lot more girly now in a pink and silver aerosol can which is a lot more pleasing to the eye and definitely grabs my attention whilst shopping!
Water (aqua), Dimethyl Ether, SD Alcohol 40 (14%), Dihydroxyacetone, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Erythurlose, Tetrasodium EDTA, Polysorbate 80, Fragrance (Parfum), Blue 1 (CI 42090), Yellow 5 (Cl 19140), Red 40 (CI 16035)
This product does not contain a sunscreen and does not protect against sunburn. Repeated exposure of unprotected skin while tanning may increase the risk of skin ageing, skin cancer and other harmful effects to the skin even if you do not burn.

The fast drying formula (dries in seconds) will develop in just a few hours into a perfect natural looking tan. The refined 360 nozzle gives a continuous spray that works at any angle, ideal for those hard to reach places.
How to Use
- They say to always wear gloves but I'm rather naughty - I just make sure I wash my hands thoroughly afterwards in case any excess tan is between my fingers, I do like to give them a lights spritz though as I don't think a tanned body and pale hands is the best look!
- Next shake the can gently before application.
- Hold can 30 - 35cm from your skin and spray in long even strokes.
- Two light coats are better than one heavy application. Allow to dry between applications.
- To tan your face, spray on sponge to apply.
- Allow to dry before dressing.
- A small amount of the colour guide may rinse off when showering but the tan will remain.
- Avoid contact with water or perspiration for at least 4 hours.
If you buy this product from Boots it will cost you £20.37 but you will receive 80 points onto your advantage card. I will definitely buy again although I may see if I can pick up a bargain on eBay or another online retailer as I do think it is slightly overpriced for a DIY tan. Well recommended!
Any questions, feel free to ask!!
Also on Ciao.
I love having a tan however I don't do sunbeds and would much rather fake it. However I'm not a fan of the orange umpa lumpa look, so finding a false tan that actually gives a natural and streak free glow has been a challenge. One of the better false tans has been Fake Bake Instant Self Tanning Spray.
The product is described as "Airbrush on your best ever tan with Fake Bake Instant Self Tanning Spray, it's the closest you'll get to a professional spray tan, giving you easy and streak free application so you look great whatever the weather! This has been formulated with the highest quality ingredients combined with two tanning agents to give you an even, long lasting tan from head to toe."
Fake Bake Airbrush tan comes in a gold 200ml can with a spray nozzle and clear cap which stays on over the nozzle very securely. The can is easy to use and the nozzle feels very sturdy. In fact a little too sturdy I found the spray nozzle had to be pressed quite hard for the spray tan to come out!
A can of Fake Bake Airbrush tan costs £20.99 from feelunique.com and is available from other online retailers for a similar price. The product is sold in Debenhams for £25.00 for a 200ml can. This is a more expensive false tanning product and in the same price category as St Tropez, and in my opinion does deliver a great looking tan so is worth paying more for.
Before applying the Fake Bake product exfoliating skin is essential. As with any fake tan the Fake Bake product will apply darker an dry patches of skin. This removes dry rough patches of skin especially around elbows, knees and ankles and leaves skin soft ready to be tanned. Fake Bake sell a Body Polish which is around £10 a bottle but other cheaper exfoliating products have similar results.
When you have prepared your skin to apply the tan you simply spray the tan over your body. It is important to hold the can approx 12 inches away from your skin. If you hold too close the tan feel very wet when it goes on and can look streaky. When you spray the tan you do so in long even strokes over your body working upwards from the legs. To do your whole body it will take around 5 minutes once you have had practice at this. The Fake Bake tan when sprayed on has a golden colour which is helpful as you can see where you have and haven't sprayed helping you to create a more evenly applied tan.
Once applied the tan feels quite dry after around 1 minute but I would leave at least 5 minutes before you apply clothing etc. I would leave a good 6 hours before showering..
Once the colour has developed, Fake Bake Airbrush tan leaves a naturally golden looking tan. Providing you have exfoliated and sprayed the tan evenly during application the tan looks totally streak free. This is a very natural looking tan on the skin and skin is left feeling smooth.
The product has a nice scent to it when it is on the skin, the lasting scent is lemony as opposed to the awful biscuit type scent some false tanning products have.
The tan is slightly more golden than St Tropez and if too much product is applied it has a more orange tint than St Tropez. Therefore it is essential to wait for the colour to develop before another spray application as the colour could be too dark if you reapply straight away. This is particularly applicable to those with fairer skin tones as the tan is quite dark and in my opinion is better suited to those with medium to darker skin.
The tan wears off gradually with daily showering. The Fake Bake tan lasts for around 5-7 days on the body before in my opinion it needs reapplying. I think this is a lot longer than other similar products such as St Tropez which lasts around 3-5 days. It is easier to reapply the product as it fades rather than letting it wear off completely then reapplying.
This is more expensive than many false tanning products however does deliver superior results. Once applied correctly it gives a fantastic natural looking streak free tan. What is impressive about the Fake Bake Airbrush tan in comparison to other false tans is that it is long lasting and lasts before 5-7 days before you need to reapply. A great tan for those with medium to darker skin tones but could be a little too dark for those with very fair skin.

Over the years i have tried all types of fake tanning products trying to get the best fake natural tan, i came across fakebake airbrush on ebay about a year and a half ago its about £17-25 for a bottle and i only use it for very special occassions as i only get one application from a bottle so its just like going for a spray tan only you do it yourself. It is a really good colour and is very easy to apply just spray on and go to sleep dont worry if there are any streaks or runny bits as this will be fine go to sleep shower the next day and your left with a lovely brown colour no nasty smells, its great but expensive and the one bad point is the mess as its a spray it tends to go everywear make sure the place your doing it is well covered and clean any surfaces right away.
I purchased the fake bake self tanning spray last week after using fake bakes lotion for over 3 years. I have trust in fake bake and decided i wanted to try something new, as much as I love the lotion it doesn't go dark enough for me. I purchased the spray tan on ebay as I found a better price because it can be quite expensive, i loved the look of the gold can.
So the day before using the spray tan I exfoliated and moisterized. The next day I decided to give it a go, i found it quite awkward for most parts of my body to get a good distance away from my skin and spray evenly, so I had help from my partner. It was very difficult to see where it had been sprayed so he went over the same area twice without letting the first coat dry which it states on the can, so i ended up with the tan dripping down me making it look streaky. I was terrified i was going to look patchy and uneven once it had dried, I decided to leave it on for just over 4 hours and then shower. A lot of the colour came away, and i was very surprised when i stepped out the shower, apart from a few streaks on my legs the tan was even and a lovely golden brown, and it hadnt gone darker on my elbows and dry areas like most fake tans. The colour lasted about a week and didn't look patchy whilst fading, the only issue was my neck was left brown whereas the rest of my body was a lighter colour.
I'm going to have another attempt at using it again tomorrow ensuring i leave areas to dry before spraying over them for a second coat.
I have to add its better to do it in the shower as it makes such a mess, my white bathroom ended up with a brown bath and tiles which had to be cleaned straight away afterwards.
I'm a bit of a fake tan novice. I don't really spend much time outdoors in the sunshine and I don't like sunbeds. That combined left me very pale and peaky looking. We had a large family do coming up and I wanted to look a little healthier as people often see how pale I am in comparison to my tanned family and think I am ill. So I took the plunge. I had seen that Fake Bake were a good brand in the magazines and despite the price I decided to buy it.
I chose spray as I didnt want to have to rub it in and get orange hands. I thought using an aerosol might give a more even less streaky look and I was right.
The tan applied easily and evenly. There were no patches and it looked blemish free. The colour was a natural tan look rather than the satsuma orange you sometimes get from fake tan. It gave a glow and made me feel much more confident. I buffed my legs arms and chest with a dry towel before getting dressed and this ensured there was no transfer of the fake tan on to my clothes.
A really great product and I would definitely use it again.
I have tried various tanning products in the past, some good and some terrible....this Fake Bake tanning spray is one of the best I have ever bought...it sprays on brown so you can see if you have missed any areas on your skin and it smells delightful, like oranges. This fake tan dries almost instantly and once washed off gives you a lovely golden colour and even coverage. The only disadvantages about this product are that it is quite messy to apply, I had to stand in the shower and spray it on as when I attempted this in the middle of the bathroom the overspray was settling on everything (brown dusty layer). Another thing was that because I had to apply this in a confined space I was standing in the overspray which caused the bottom of my feet to be stained dark brown eeek! Alright in the winter but not so great in the summer when your feet may be exposed.
This fake tan brings you out in a lovely natural colour but tends to go a bit patchy once it starts to wear off, especially where my arm bends. I will usually disguise this by adding another layer of tan :)
I think this fake tan is a bit pricey for usage. This spray tan will only give me around 3 applications.
Overall I would say that this is one of the better fake tanning products but I now prefer to use one of the other Fake Bake tanning products that will allow me more applications.
It's bad enough having holiday blues, but when your tan starts to fade - even worse. I have recently returned from 6 months away in Asia. Over this period I had built up an even bronzed tan. Sadly I came home in winter and my tan didn't stick around for long :-(
I think most people can feel washed out and pale in winter months. Having a healthy glow makes me feel so much better. I don't agree with sun beds as I used them quite a lot years ago and developed skin pigmentation. There are a number of risks associated with sun beds; Premature aging, pigmentation, skin cancer and problems with the eyes from UV rays. These are just a few risks.
In the past I have tried all sorts of tanning cosmetics, creams, gels, mousses, wipes and sprays. Most of the time I have ended up looking like I've been tangoed! Not a cool look! Then there is the issue of orange hands from rubbing in self tan cream. Also not a good look... especially when you have a job interview and have to shake hands with the potential employer (notice I said potential employer - I blame the fact I didn't get the job on my lovely orange hands!)
Worse than the orange hands, I have also ended up with streaky bacon looking legs! This is probably due to not exfoliating before applying tan or not being rubbed in properly. It's actually quite a lot of effort to achieve a 'natural' looking tan with self tanning products.
*Fake Bake Instant Self Tanning Spray*
The great thing about this product, is that it's the closest you'll get to a professional spray tan. No streaks and no orange hands! It will also dry instantly, so no waiting around before you get dressed. Some creams and sprays are oil based and can leave your skin feeling slimy or sticky. Not Fake Bake, this product will dry on your skin without any residue. Fake Bake is non - comedogenic so it won't clog your pores either. As an extra bonus, Fake Bake also smells fab too!
The tan lasted me about 5-6 days, then started to go slightly patchy. I find that if you re-apply the spray you will get an even result again, but if I re-apply again after that it will be patchy. I usually exfoliate and wait a couple of days before applying again.
You can buy this spray from Debenhams, leading chemists, ebay and major department stores. It will cost you under £30, my advice is to shop around as the price does vary from £21-£30.
Augua-Eau (purified water), Dimethylether,SD Alcohol 40, Dihydroxyacetone, Erythrulose, Propylene Glycol, Glycerine, Polysorbate 20, Fragrance, Phenoxyethanol, FD&C Blue #1,m FD&C Yellow #5, Red #40.
*So how does it work?*
Simple! Fake Bake Instant Self Tanning Spray comes in a gold colour aerosol can of 207ml (7 fl.oz). It is great for those hard to reach areas, giving you an even tan. The spray is a light mist that covers your body, penetrating the skin to give you an even flawless tan.
-Shake gently before each use.
-Hold 12" to 14" from your skin and spray in long even strokes.
-Two light coats are better than one heavy application.
-Allow to dry between applications.
-Apply to clean moisturised skin (use oil free moisturiser)
-To tan your face, spray on sponge and apply.
There's a whole range of Fake Bake tanning products available. Lots of different shades, lotions, face, body, legs etc. I have tried a few and I can fully recommend the self tanning spray as it gives best all round results- I have said goodbye to the oompa loompa look!
Apparently celebrities including Madonna and Britney Spears swear by this amazing spray! I can certainly see why.
Why I purchased the product
I was first introduced to Fake Bake Instant Self Tanning Spray when I attended The Beauty Show at the NEC 2 years ago. This is a show for beauty therapists and only trusted brands and products are sold here, at retail price. When I walked past the Fake Bake stand, I saw someone getting a spray tan, I stayed and watched for a few minutes to see the outcome and when the girl stepped out the tent, she looked amazing. Her tan was even, streak free and natural looking, it was a really beautiful colour. After seeing this I went to the counter to speak to one of the representitives about what products I could purchase and they recommended the Instant Self Tanning Spray, I was told the results were similar to that of the spray tan and you literally just spray it on with no rubbing in or mess, I thought it sounded fantastic, so I purchased a can and I am so glad I did!
About Fake Bake
Fake Bake is a US company that has taken the self tanning market by storm. The company is relatively new - having only founded in 2002 by Sandra McClumpha, a former salon owner. Even though the brand is still relatively new Fake Bake is one of the most popular self tanning ranges to date and one I will definately stick by.
About Fake Bake Aerosol Airbrush Tan
What Fake Bake say about the product - "Airbrush on your best ever tan with Fake Bake Instant Self Tanning Spray, it's the closest you'll get to a professional spray tan, giving you easy and streak free application so you look great whatever the weather! This has been formulated with the highest quality ingredients combined with two tanning agents to give you an even, long lasting tan from head to toe."
Is it true? Yes, I would agree, it is simple to apply and does give you the effect of a spray tan and is always streak free. I would also say this fake tan has the most staying power compared to other tans I have used.
Other products to use with this
It is recommended that you use Fake Bake Skin Smoothie on your skin before you apply any Fake Bake tanning product and this is one extra that a company sells that I would actually use everytime! It really does make a difference to your tan. If you apply it all over your body, concentrating on dry bits such as your elbows, knees, hands and feet it will give them a soft, smooth surface for the Fake Bake to settle on. If you're skin is uneven then the tan will also be. It is also great to use as an every day moisturiser and for moisturising after your tan.
Fake Bake Instant Self Tanning Spray V Fake Bake Self Tanning Lotion
I have attended Fake Bake courses in both Spray Tanning (which produces the same effect as Fake Bake Instant Tanning Spray) and in Rub in Application. From a professional point of view I would definately recommend Fake Bake Instant Tanning Spray every time, and also from a clients point of view my clients prefer this, the reason I no longer offer the Rub in Application at the salon. I like to have confidence in what I am giving my clients and I definately have confidence in this.
The tan comes in a beautiful gold 207ml can with a spray nozzle covered by a gold cap. Across the front is 'Fake Bake Instant Self Tanning Spray Airbrush'. Although the gold can is beautiful and elegant looking, I must admit the style of the writing makes the product look a little cheap and not so professional. On the back are directions, a list of ingredients, warnings and a little information about the product.
The can is easy to use, although luckily it hasn't happened to me, but quite a few friends have stated that the spray nozzle has broken half way through the usage. This would be annoying but I do know that if this happens, then Fake Bake will replace it free of charge for you.
Before you start, I would definately recommend that you stand in the shower so any overspray can be washed away and clean over any white surfaces after use.
The first step is to exfoliate, you can use Fake Bakes Body Polish, or your own but you need to make sure it is a soapless and oil free product which will leave no residue on the skin. This is important as residue can affect the outcome of your tan. The second step, although not complusory but I would recommend is to use Fake Bake Skin Smoothie all over your body, concentrating on dry areas such as your knees and elbows. I would recommend before you start spraying to maybe wear a shower cap to avoid the tan discolouring your hair. Then when you are ready to tan yourself, the steps are simple. Hold the can about 12inches from your skin and spray in long even strokes over your body. I usually start and the legs and work my way up. (If a women!) Imagine you are shaving your legs, the way you do that would be the way to apply it, long upward strokes. You will notice a difference in colour straight away, but it does take a few hours to fully develop, so you are best to wait a bit before you apply a second coat. If you are used to doing this though and know how it turns out, then you can apply two coats one after another, but allow each coat to dry before you apply another. To tan your face, spray on sponge or mix some moisturiser and the tan in your hands and apply, but make sure you wash your hands afterwards to avoid staining! As I am used to using this tan alot, I just lightly spray it over my face twice, as I know what colour to expect. If any patches are too dark then just blot some excess off with a tissue.
The product is really easy to use. It takes about 5 minutes to do a full body application and is great to do just before a night out. There is no need to wash it off and although it develops over a few hours slightly you will be a good colour immediately.
How it looks
You have instant colour after spraying hense the products name but it does still develop over a few hours. The colour is a lovely golden brown, it isn't orange, yellow or even have green tones like some fake tans. It looks really natural. It's also non- comedogenic so it won't clog your pores, a bit problem I find when it comes to applying fake tan, so this one is great. It is suitable for sensitive skin too, which I suffer from, it doesn't irriate it at all. I have ecezma on some areas of my body and I find the tan just sticks to that and looks terrible, so I use mix alot of moisturiser in with some of the tan then apply to the parts of skin with ecezma and gently pat it in. The tan is even and streak free. When you do have a shower, some of the colour will rub off, this is nothing to worry about - it is just the cosmetic bronzer so you can see where you are applying the product. You won't look any lighter and the tan will remain the same.
Alot of fake tans smell awful, and although this has a light lemon fragrance to it, it still smells like fake tan.
Re-applying the product
You can reapply the product as many times as you like. In one night you could do 10 applications if you really wanted, but you will be very dark! I tend to do 2 or 3 applications over my body for the desired effect. I would recommend reapplying every week to keep up your tan and for you to continue having your glowing golden tan.
How it lasts
I find this tan lasts longer than any others I have used and when it is fading it doesn't turn patchy and show, your skin just discreetly turns paler. I would say this lasts up to 10 days, but this does depend how you care for it. If you don't moisturise, rub when drying and exfoliate it isn't going to last as long as if you did the opposite. A tan will never last as long on your face, as you are always applying make up and removing it and cleansing and toning so I would say this lasts about 3 days on your face, but is simple to reapply on your face. If you really don't like your tan - go swimming as the chlorine strips the tan, great if it has gone really streaky and theres no other way to remove it, another thing that helps to remove it is toner. If you want to continue using the tan, when it begins to come to the end of the 7-10 days I would recommend reapplying it before it fades. This makes it easier and you don't have to apply as much, you are just topping it up.
Price & Availability
I try and purchase this from beauty shows at the NEC and at Excel for £10, but unless you are a beauty therapist you won't be able to do this. So another site I use to purchase inbetween these shows is www.lookfantastic.com for £22.91,and you will get a 207ml can for this but you will also have to pay postage and packaging of about £2.00 and they have really quick delivery. I use this website as they are authorised Fake Bake stockists. You can also purchase this on Fake Bakes website and various other websites, ebay and Fake Bake salons, but I haven't seen many of them around the UK.
This is the perfect fake tan, it is quick, simple and easy to use - it takes five minutes to apply and you are left with the most even, natural looking colour a fake tan can give you. I would definately recommend this to anyone looking for a bit of colour.
