I have bought this product from Ambre Solaire several times. Garnier Ambre Solaire products are among my favourite sun care items so I do tend to choose this brand quite often.
In the case of using after sun that contains a tan maintainer I tend to be more interested in using them when I have arrived home after my holiday in the sun when I want to keep looking tanned for as long as possible. But I do sill want my sun tan to look natural and therefore I think tan maintainers are a good product to use for this purpose. I think it helps to prevent skin from peeling.
This particular product is very nice to use. It applies smoothly and doesn't take too long to be absorbed into the skin, being non-greasy. Soon after use my skin feels soft but clean and not at all greasy. But I would advise that this after sun is best applied straight after bathing or showering and applying before dressing. This is because it is a tan maintainer as well as an after sun lotion and therefore contains a small amount of a self-tanning ingredient which can stain clothing. Hands should also be washed after using or they will also look discoloured!
This Ambre Solaire after sun contains glycerol and vitamin E. These ingredients will nicely re hydrate one’s skin, to keep it moist, feeling soft and looking good. If using on holiday after a day in the sun it will add moisture to the skin and soothe as well as looking good, giving that boost to your developing sun tan.
It can be used on the body and on the face.
Garnier Ambre Solaire After sun Hydrating Tan Maintainer is readily available from chemists and supermarkets. There are often offers to be found and I would expect to pay around £5 for a 200ml sized tube.
I bought this for my holiday to Greece to use as an after sun but found that it is probably more like a weak fake tan. That being said it does moisturise well and prevent peeling of the skin.
You apply it after being in the sun for a while to hydrate your skin. It contains glycerol and Vitamin E to help prevent dryness and peeling of skin caused by exposure to the sun. The 'tan maintainer' in the product supposedly prolongs the look of your suntan.
The product is easy to apply - just apply on clean skin and the product will be absorbed.
I have found a couple of times that I have been left with slight orange marks on my skin if I haven't rubbed it in completely so it does have to be treated like a fake tan. It does have a warning on the bottle to wash your hands after every application and this is important - I have been left with orange hands once!
I will point out that it is important to take care when applying the product on your face as it can change the colour of your eyebrows and any baby hairs around the hairline. The bottle does warn about this though. They also warn to avoid contact with fabrics as it may stain but I have not found this to be a problem.
The instructions do say that it is a non-greasy, non-sticky formula but I have found that my skin can feel a little sticky after application.
Like others who have reviewed this product I believe it works more as a fake tan than a 'tan maintainer' and just gives you a layer of fake tan over your natural sun tan. I use this more as a fake tanning product now to give my skin a bit of a glow. I have found that personally I don't mind the smell of this product compared to other fake tanning moisturisers I have used.
In the future I think I would be more inclined to buy a normal after sun product and not one with fake tan in it as this isn't the reason I bought the product. When I have a natural tan I don't want to be covering it with a fake one, I just want to hydrate my skin to prevent my skin from peeling!
I paid £4 for this product in boots and the bottle size is 200ml. I have found that the bottle has lasted me well as you do not have to apply too much.
I work really hard at protecting my skin in the sun to stop me from burning as I have fair skin. This means that I am extra proud about any tan that I do manage to achieve and unfortunately it seems to fade way too soon. I looked for a product which would allow me to hang onto my colour and this is why I bought the After Sun Hydrating Tan Maintainer by Garnier Ambre Solaire.
What does the product do?
The product promises to deeply hydrate your skin and restore its moisture levels after you have been sunbathing in order to prolong your tan. It claims that it will soothe and rebalance the skin after being in the sun. It contains Vitamin E to nourish and protect the skin which will keep it looking younger for longer. The product also contains a small amount of a self tanning ingredient which enhances and deepens your natural tan to give your skin a beautiful sun kissed glow. It promises to leave your skin soft and supple, and looking radiant and healthy.
How do you use the product?
The product can be used on both the face and the body. It is to be applied to clean skin all over the body after sun bathing. You can apply a generous amount to the skin and massage it in until it has been fully absorbed. As it contains a little fake tan, you need to be careful with the application around the hair line and the brow line. You need to be careful when you apply the product around the eye area. Once you're done, you need to wash your hands and you need to ensure the product has been fully applied before dressing.
Packaging and Price
The product comes contained within a plastic bottle which has a flip top lid which is easy to open and close. The bottle is a pale blue at the top which fades into a tan colour at the bottom and the bottle gives some more information about the product. The product will cost you around £3.50 for 200ml and it can be bought from supermarkets, stores such as Superdrug and Boots, and also from a range of online websites.
Application and Performance
When I first purchased the product, I only thought it was a tan enhancer after sun product. I have to admit that I hadn't read it properly so I didn't know that it contained fake tan. I thought it was still worth a go so after a full day in the sun on holidays, I gave it a go. The cream is white in colour like a normal after sun. It is easy to apply to the skin and it doesn't pull or drag the skin as you massage it in which is a good thing when you have tender or sore skin after being in the sun. It smells completely delicious. It smells a bit fruity and it is truly tropical so it is perfect for your summer holiday and the aroma lingers on the sun long after use.
The cream relieves feelings of tightness on my skin which was instantly comforting and it does give my skin a lovely burst of moisture which left it feeling soft and smooth. When I woke up the next day, my skin looked nice and it wasn't dry or flaky at all. Unfortunately in the sun, I could see small patches that I had missed and it didn't look good. I went on holidays to get a natural tan and ended up looking like I had just used fake tan. If you knew this contained fake tan and was a bit better than me at applying it then this would be different. That being said, it didn't cause my skin any irritations or discomfort.
All in all, the product does soften the skin and hydrate it well which would help to prolong your natural tan. Unfortunately that natural tan is then covered with a fake once which is not what I want when on holiday. If your good at applying fake tan then this may be more up your street but I was left feeling disappointed. It does smell good and it hydrates the skin well but using this product once was enough for me.
I have to say that when I first purchased this product I didn't really realise excatly what it was! I just picked it up thinking that it was after sun which would somehow help to prolong my tan and as I like Ambre Solaire I thought it would be good. However, I then discovered that the 'tan prolonging' part of it is actually just a 'low level of self tanning ingredient', so actually it is not maintaining my own tan at all, it is giving me a false tan on top of it!!
Anyway, this was my own fault for not reading it properly, though I do still feel it is slightly misleading. I bought this for £5.99 from Boots for a 200ml tube, though I have seen it on sale elsewhere too. A tube of this size will last quite a while so it is fairly good value.
It has quite a pleasant smell, like a sun cream really, but unfortunately once applied this ends up being that annoying sickly biscuity smell that you always find with self tanning creams! This smell then wafts about all day!
It has a nice consistency, quite light and it blends in well. It does also do a good job of moisturising, so I guess this will help with keeping your tan going. The finish is fine, I had no problems with streaks and it fades out well. I now use this as a general tanning product, rather than one to maintain a natural tan because personally I would rather my natural tan remain looking natural!
Although I often tan quite easily, especially on my arms and shoulders I like to maintain and keep the look of my tan for as long as I can. When I was in my local Boots store I happened to see this product and thought it sounded great so I purchased it and gave it a go.
~ THE PRODUCT ~
The product is made by Garnier and is called After sun hydrating tan maintainer. I know many people have made the mistake of buying this and using it just as an after sun without realising that the product does contain self-tanning ingredients to keep your tan looking great. The product contains glycerol and vitamin E so soothe and hydrate your skin after being out in the skin. The product contains a low level of self-tanning ingredients which subtly enhances and deepens your tan and helps your skin to keep its radiant glow. The formula is greasy and non-sticky, so is quickly absorbed by the skin. The product is a cream and comes in a light blue and orangey coloured tube which sits on its lid. On the front it states that it's a Hydrating tan maintainer, but it also states that the product is after sun as well. This may confuse some people who think it's just an after sun. On the back of the tube is information about the product, how to use it and a list of ingredients. The product sounds very simple and easy to use so I decided it was time to put it to the test.
~ PRICE AVALIABILITY ~
I purchase a 200ml tube of this for £7.99 from my local Boots store.
~ USING THE PRODUCT ~
Apply the product to clean, dry skin avoiding eyebrows and roots of your hair. The cream is suitable for both face and body. Ensure you wash your hands after each application. The product does not protect you from UV light. I flipped open the lid and squeezed a small amount onto my fingertips. The cream was white and wasn't at all thick but was quite runny. I rubbed the cream all over me where I had tanned. The cream was cold, but very soft against my skin. It didn't leave my skin feeling greasy and it didn't take long for the product to soak in. I did how-ever give the cream an extra few minutes to soak in just in case. As the product isn't very thick you only need to use a small amount as a little bit of it goes a long way. The product had a slight smell to it which smelt a little of after sun creams, how-ever there was also quite a strong smell of fake tan as well which wasn't too pleasant. I made sure that I washed my hands straight away after applying the cream, as the last thing I wanted was discoloured hands. When the cream had soaked in I got into bed, so I could rate the results in the morning.
~ RESULTS ~
The first thing I noticed was how much better my tan looked. It looked slightly darker than it was but my skin looked moisturised and hydrated. Looking after my skin now I could tell that the product contained a small amount of self-tanners, how-ever it hadn't made me look orange or un-natural which was good. I couldn't help but notice the fake tan smell that the product left on my skin which was a down side to using the product. Also I noticed that any white bits, did have a slight orange tinge to them so you can literally only use this on your tan to make it last longer and this cannot be used as a self-tanner as the results will look un-natural. I was really impressed with the results and continued to the use the product every few days to maintain my tan and to make it last longer. I personally think when using this product it did help to make my tan last a lot longer than normal and it definitely made my skin look and feel hydrated.
~ OVERALL OPINION ~
This is a great product to maintain your tan and to keep it looking good. I often find that the sun can dry out my skin and I often suffer from dry shoulders. The cream was a fantastic moisturiser and my skin felt smooth and soft. You do need to ensure that you wash your hands every time you have applied the product as it does contain self-tanners and you will be left with dis-coloured hands. You need to make sure that the cream has soaked into your skin before dressing as it can stain some fabrics. The product doesn't protect you from UV light so this cannot be used for when out in the sun or on the beach. I give this product 4 out of 5 stars as the only downside to the product is the fake tan smell.
