A sun oil which protects and nourishes the skin and which allows you to gain a healthy tan

It is extremely important to protect your skin from the UVA rays that we are exposed to whenever we go outside into the sunshine. It can cause permanent skin damage, premature aging and can even cause skin cancer. Putting ourselves at risk of all those things is a bit silly when there are so many lovely products out there that can keep us protected and enable us to get a healthy and long lasting tan.

I have very pale skin but by the end of the summer, I have usually got a decent tan but I religiously use sun cream to the point where my friends tease me. It's not uncommon for me go through a whole bottle in two days and after the first week of my holiday last year, I found that I had completely run out of sun cream.

I went to the shop near the hotel to purchase some more and looked for the cheapest sun cream from a well known brand. On that occasion, this was the Garnier Ambre Solaire Golden Protect Oil. An oil is not a product that I would normally choose but I already had a bit of colour meaning I was unlikely to burn and my money was running out so I bought it.

      What does it do?
The product promises to protect your skin from both the UVA and the UVB rays which would otherwise harm our skin. By using this product, we are guaranteed the high protection of a sun lotion but the golden tan of an oil. It claims that while protecting our skin, it will also nourish and moisturise it, leaving our skin feeling silky and smooth. The product is water resistant and will allow you gain a healthy tan in a safe way. It comes with a variety of SPF depending on your needs, including 10, 15, 20 and 30.

      How does it work?
The product contains Garnier's patented filtration system which prevents those nasty and harmful rays from penetrating the skin. It uses Mexoryl XL which is one of the best ingredients known to protect our skin from sun damage.

The oil contains Shea Butter which is one of nature's best moisturisers. It is highly hydrating and is quickly absorbed by the skin and forms a protective barrier across it. It is enriched with vitamins which nourish the skin leaving it feeling soft and smooth. It contains Vitamin E which is an antioxidant meaning that the butter helps to fight against the free radicals that the sun has left in our skin and prevents them from causing premature aging.

Also included is Menoi Oil which moisturises the skin and prevents it from becoming dry. It speeds up the tanning process and prevents the skin from peeling after sun exposure. The substance is created by soaking the petals of tropical flowers in Coconut Oil and gives this product a gorgeous summer aroma perfect for a holiday.

How do you use the product?
You spray the product all over the body twenty minutes before your skin will be exposed to the sun. I wouldn't say that this product is suitable for use on the face as it is a really thick oil which would probably lead to blemishes and shininess to the extreme. The product should be applied again at intervals throughout the day and also after swimming in the water.

      Packaging and price
The product comes contained within a translucent brown bottle so you can clearly see how much of the product you have left. It has writing across the front of the bottle and a caramel coloured spray mechanism. In order to access the product you push down on the top and a spritz is released. The product has a clear lid to prevent it from being sprayed in your bag and to keep it clean.

I bought mine on holidays for 10 Euros which was really cheap. Over here it will cost closer to £15 and for that money you will get 150ml of the oil. It is available to buy from most department stores, supermarkets and many online websites so if you shop around you may find yourself a better deal.

      My thoughts
Firstly and most importantly, this product really does protect you from the sun. I have never once burnt when using this product and I feel completely safe when I use it. Despite it being an oil, it doesn't seem to intensify the heat of the sun and my skin never feel tight or uncomfortable during or after use.

Even when I have been out in the hot sun for longer than I know I should be, it doesn't result in any pinkness or soreness on my skin. I borrowed my friends bottle one day, which was SPF 10 and still I didn't burn so the level of protection that comes with this protect is excellent.

The colour of the oil has a golden tinge to it so when you use on your body, you get an instant touch of colour. Some creams that I've used make you look deathly pale when you use them, so this was a pleasant change to that! The product comes with a delicious tropical smell that is so far removed from the usual aroma of sun lotions and it has a gorgeous coconut fragrance.

Another thing that I love about the product is how easy it is to apply the oil without bothering whoever you are with. The spray application is lovely and cooling on the skin and you can do reapplications without even sitting up which is great for obsessive sun lotion appliers like me! The spray function also means that you can put the oil on your back without having to ask anyone to do it for you.

After you've showered, your skin really does feel like silk and it's definitely the softest that a sun protection lotion has ever made my skin. It feel nourished and in fantastic condition. My skin never feels tight or dry after being in the sun wearing this and it maintains my tan because my skin doesn't start to flake or peel.

Now for the negative, and it's quite a big one. I actually laughed out loud when I read on the Garnier website that this product contains non greasy feeling oils. This has got to be the most greasy substance I have ever put on my skin and you feel dirty from the minute you apply it. It makes you feel sticky and horrible and I could never wear it anywhere but on a beach by the pool. I wouldn't last five minutes in work wearing this.

It makes you look as greasy as you feel and you will look like you've just coated yourself with baby oil. It leaves a greasy trail wherever you go, leaving foot prints and hand prints over everything you touch. If you go near a white towel or white clothing, it will stain them with a brown colour. From the minute I put this on, I can not wait to take it off again and, even though it has never caused any blemishes on my body, I would never use this on my face.

All in all, this product protects your skin from burning in the sun and helps you to develop and maintain a healthy tan. It smells delicious and gives your skin a coat of colour before you even go in the sun. Whether this warrants feeling so greasy and disgusting and leaving a trail of brown oil wherever you go would be up to you. I personally won't buy this again but I'm still giving it high marks for protecting my skin, smelling delicious, making my skin so soft after a shower and for the ease of application.
