I expected this product to come out a bronze colour but it came out as white, much better i find actually. It is silky and acts like a lovely normal moisturizer, not sticky or anything and comes on very well. It gives you a lovely glow but maybe not an extremely visible tan.
I've recently been searching for a self-tanning product that will give me the perfect skin colour in preperation for a big 'do' I'm attending soon. This Maybelline Dream Sun Glow Subtle Glow Daily Moisturizer was one of the cream tanners I've tried. I should point out that although this is labelled as a body 'moisturizer' that it contains a mild tanning agent which gradually builds up colour on the skin with regular use. The cream should therefore be treated and applied with the same caution as any other self-tanning solution. It should also not be confused with the Maybelline 'Instant Shimmer' product whose packaging looks alike and that is similarly named.
The product comes in a malleable squeazy 200ml sized tube and stands on it's dispensing end where there is a flip lid. The top is easy to open and stays securely shut after use but would need taping down if you plan to travel with it. The product has lots of details on the back of the tube including the shade. Mine says 01 Golden, which is especially for fair tones. The company also make a darker, richer shade called 'Bronze'.
The brand claim that the moisturiser will leave your skin soft and hydrated whilst the tanning agent will gradually develop a natural and even tan. The ingredients of the moisturiser include chamomile for extra softness. The formula is a self tanner and body lotion only and does not protect from UV light.
The lotion is a bit runny and I tend to dispense more than I need. The translucent white colour and thinness of the lotion means that it feels like less of a luxury and isn't as much of a joy to rub into the skin as a thicker lotion might be. However, the thin solution does have it's benefits. It means that it can be applied straight onto the skin unlike most cream tanners which require you to moisturise with a different lotion prior to use. The thinness of this lotion means it is easier to smooth over larger areas of skin without clogging in one spot.
As far as being a moisturiser, despite it's thin solution this does actually work. There seems to be a kind of waxy glyceryl solution that is left on the surface of the skin once the lotion has sunk in. This means skin is left feeling bouncy and fresh. It is effective even on the roughest areas of the body. Although I was initially reluctant to use it over knees and elbows due to prior self-tanning disasters, I found that I needn't have worried as the product does as it promises and builds up a tan very gradually - so no shocking brown patches!
The colour that builds up is very natural looking and seems to make my skin glow and look healthy rather than change my colour completely. This is one self-tanning solution that I feel confident about using every time I apply it. I have no fear about streaks or about getting too much colour. The formula is mild yet effective. I find that once I achieved a nice colour (after a few applications) I only need to top up every few days.
What is brilliant about this product is that no-one has ever guessed that I am wearing self-tanning solution. This is due to the fruity fragrance - it is like melons and pineapples. There is no hint of that horrible burning, chemically stink that many self-tanners have. The fragrance is quite strong and radiates long after application.
Normal rules apply for the self-tanner though: wash hands after use; don't use on face; rub well around drier parts of body or difficult to reach places; keep away from clothing. Follow these rules and you shouldn't have any unwanted results!
I would recommend this self-tanner to everyone but especially self-tanning virgins or those who want a very natural, sun-kissed effect rather than all out Californian bronze.
The product is available for £5.86 at Boots but look around as I got mine cheaper from a local store. It is definitely worth trying!
