A SPF 22 sun cream which moisutrises, nourishes and protects the skin

Neal's Yard Remedies believes that beauty products should contain natural ingredients that benefit our body, mind and our overall well being. The company has been in business since 1981 and promises to include the least amount of synthetic ingredients within their products that is possible. Their herbal and natural remedies are created without damaging the environment and they never test their products or the ingredients within them on animals.

The Lavender Sun Screen is a product which has been created by Neal's Yard Remedies in order to protect our skin from the sun. The product comes with a Sun Protection Factor of 22 and it is designed specifically to protect fair skin like mine that burns easily when exposed to the sun.

Why do you need to wear Sunscreen?
Wearing sunscreen will protect your skin from prematurely aging making you look old before your time and damage caused by the sun is permanent and it is impossible to undo. The biggest reason to wear sunscreen is that damage caused by the sun is the main cause of skin cancer.

      How does it work?
The lotion contains sunscreens which block the harmful UV rays from burning and damaging the skin. It is these rays which can lead to cancer and premature aging of the skin.

The cream contains Organic Shea Butter which is one of nature's most moisturising substances. The butter hydrates your skin keeping it smooth and supple and maintains the elasticity of the skin. It revitalises the skin and has soothing properties. The butter is extremely nutritious for the skin as contains Vitamins A, E and F which all work together to keep the skin healthy and looking young. As Shea Butter comes from a nut source, this product will not be suitable for use on those suffering with nut allergies.

It also contains Sunflower Oil which hydrates the skin without leaving it feeling greasy and uncomfortable. It is enriched with fatty acids which are needed for the healthy maintenance of the skin. The oil acts as an anti oxidant, helping to keep the skin looking younger for longer.

Lavender is included because of its soothing properties. The herb helps to reduce inflammation and restore the skins health. It encourages the growth of healthy new skin cells and tones the skin.

Chamomile is present because of its calming effect on the skin and it has restorative qualities. It contains a host of vitamins which heal any damage that has been caused to the skin and also conditions the skin giving it a healthy glow.

Calendula is also included in order to fight the anti oxidants which may be lurking in the skin which may otherwise have caused premature aging. It promotes the synthesis of collagen which makes your skin firmer and more toned as well as possessing anti bacterial and anti inflammatory qualities which can calm puffy skin.

Bees Wax is present in order to help the skin to retain moisture while Aloe Vera adds an extra soothing action which helps to cool the skin. The Aloe Vera also helps to strengthen the skin and keeps it supple. The Horse Chestnut which is included helps to firm the skin and acts as an anti inflammatory. And finally is contains Corn which absorbs the sweat produced by your body and prevents the lotion from being washed away.

How do you use the product?
The product is to be used in much the same way as you would use a normal sun lotion. You take a generous amount and apply it to the whole body and massage into the skin. It needs to be applied around 20 minutes before exposing your skin to the sun in order to give it time to start working.

The sun lotion needs to be reapplied every two hours although I apply it more frequently when I am in really hot sun but then I am a little obsessive with protecting my skin. It also needs to be reapplied after swimming and it is also safe to be used on children over the age of six months. Although personally I think the SPF is too low to be used on children.

The product comes in the company's trade mark dark blue packaging and the lotion is contained within a tube with a black flip top lid that clicks open and shut. The product costs around £13 for 150ml which is around the price of many sun lotions these days. It is also available in smaller 50ml bottles which may be handy when travelling. It can be bought from most large department stores, including Boots and also from many online websites.

This sun lotion has an extremely thick consistency which coats the skin easily. It is absorbed fairly quickly and doesn't make you feel sticky or uncomfortable. It has a really luxurious feel and it hydrates your skin very well.

I have never burnt while wearing this product and it makes you feel safe and secure. I don't feel the need to apply this quite as often as some other brands that I've tried. I haven't used this product on my face as I have spot prone skin and I prefer to use a higher SPF on that area but it hasn't caused any irritation elsewhere on my body, so I assume facial use would be fine.

The product has a delicious herbal fragrance which is lovely although it's different to the sort of smell that you normally find with sun creams. It also contains a natural insect repellant. When this product is washed off, your skin feels as soft as silk, with no horrible dryness or tightness that you sometimes experience after being in the sun.

The only criticism that I have with this product is that as it is such a deep white colour it makes your skin look even paler. This is not a good thing when your skin is already as pale as mine as it makes you look like a ghost lurking around the pool! For this reason, I tend to use this product in the first few days of summer when my skin hasn't seen the sun for a long time and needs the extra protection that this product gives.

All in all, this is a great sun cream that moisturises and protects the skin. It smells nice and keeps the skin looking young. The natural ingredients that is possesses is a massive bonus against many of the similar products out there.
