Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Lip Care SPF 20
Advantages: Effective; easy to use; protects and repairs; fast acting
Disadvantages: Pricier than most alternatives
As much as I like to have a flavoured lip balm stashed in my handbag, I know that if I want proper protection for my lips in hot weather, as well as the coldest part of winter, I need to use something with a decent sun protection factor. A few sun-care brands now offer a lip product among their ranges but my product of choice is the Lip Care SPF20 from Neutrogena's Norwegian Formula range.
The Norwegian Formula range is designed for protection against and relief of dry skin caused by extreme cold in winter. An advertising campaign was based on the idea that Norwegian fisherman would use these products to protect their hands and faces from the harsh wind and rain, and the low temperatures which can cause the skin to become dry and chapped, when out catching cod in the North Atlantic. I first bought this lip care product when travelling to the Julian Alps in Slovenia one February because I knew that it was going to be very cold; I hadn't forgotten my first skiing trip many years earlier when my lips were very sore from a combination of cold temperatures and blazing sun and I didn't want to suffer like that again.
The Norwegian Formula range has been designed to minimise moisture loss and retain water under the skin and I suppose the lip salve must work to the same principle because it is described as 'moisture rich'. It comes in the form of a 4.8g stick which twists up like a conventional lipstick. A note on the packaging says it's for 'dry, chapped lips' which ignores the fact that you should use this before your lips get into that condition. A note on the Neutrogena website is more helpful 'Apply often for immediate relief and protection.'
The salve has a mildly sweet fragrance, something like vanilla but there's only a hint. There's also a slight flavour of vanilla too. Application is easy and because it's a stick and not a pot you don't even need to take your gloves off when using this in low temperatures. It is non greasy but it leaves a coating on the lips that is not unpleasant. There's a marked difference in how my lips feel when I wear this in cold weather compared with those occasions when I dash outside without thinking.
In Slovenia you need only go out for a short time on a winter's night without lip protection to come back in doors with dry lips. Do it more than once and more than likely those lips will be chapped. Although this product isn't medicated it treats chapped lips extraordinarily well and it works quickly but frequent re-application is the key. If my lips feel dry at bedtime, a liberal covering with this will ensure they feel soft and smooth the next morning.
Although this is marketed as a product to be used in winter, with an SPF of 20 there's no reason it shouldn't be used to protect from summer sun too. In very hot weather and if likely to be in the sun for some time (for example when I'm out cycling for the day) I'll probably use a total sunscreen with a zinc base but for shorter periods in the sun I find Norwegian Formula perfectly adequate. It keeps my lips soft and smooth and prevents them from becoming dry.
At £2.99 for 4.8g (Boots, 1st July 2013) this product is more expensive than a lot of lip balms; for example, the limited edition tin of Pink Champagne Vaseline works out at £17.50 for 100g, while Neutrogena Norwegian Formula costs somewhere in the region of £62 for the same weight. The method of application of Norwegian Formula does, however, enable more economic use and the multiple advantages of Norwegian Formula - protection, comfort and repair - are all in its favour. Norwegian Formula also has the advantage that when the weather is very warm, it keeps its firmness and doesn't become excessively greasy unlike some other stick lip balms; this also ensures that you don't use this any more quickly than you need to. Sometimes more is less.
