This product has been knocking about the market for years and i think there are plenty reasons that people are still buying it!
For one, some people do not have the time, or the patience for long developing tans like St Tropez or Fake Bake. Also- with long developing tans- if you miss a part or go wrong - it can stain for days and much more difficult to get off.
With Rimmel Instant Tan- the product is more easily removable. This product is for people who want instant colour- perhaps for a night out or special occasion. I also find it's a good product to top up over your base tan it you want darker coverage.
Warning: the product will come out very dark brown colour- you have to make sure that you really rub it in your skin (use a mint or a glove) otherwise it will look false and patchy! If you find that the colour is too dark (it does come in different shades) my biggest tip would be to mix this tan would a body moisturiser- this will almost dilute the darkest of the tan but still give you a good colour whilst hydrating your skin!
I find this product is always handy to have- i use it more for touch ups or to use on difficult areas of the body that won't tan like your hands and feet or the back of the arms just to even out the whole colour of my body.
I don''t get alot of time to get out to get a natural tan so to have a product that is quick and simple to apply and comes out beautifully is brilliant!! Love love love!!
As we are currently enjoying a heatwave (woohoo!!) i thought it would be the perfect time to review this instant tanner, as it is the first product i grab when contemplating getting my pasty white legs out for all to see!
I have bought this product for years, it truly is my go-to product when i need to give myself some much needed colour. I buy it in the shade "light matte" as it looks very natural on my fairer skin tone and is good for using on the face. I have also purchased the same colour in the shimmery version which i also like, it gives a lovely sheen to the arms and legs but i tend to avoid putting this on my face as it is slightly too sparkly for me, but that is just a personal preference.
One of the great points about this tanner is that it is so easy to apply, it blends very easily and the colour can be built up for those who like a slightly deeper tan, or just applied once for a nice wash of colour. I do find that i have to work with the product quite quickly as it dries really fast, but that is a good thing for me as i can just apply it and get dressed straight away without having to worry about it not being dry. It dries almost instantly.
For best results i do suggest applying with a mitt to ensure a streak-free finish, however today i just blended with my hands and it turned out just fine.I can apply this to my face, chest, arms and legs in roughly 5 minutes, the product really does live up to its "instant" name. Do not be put off by the colour of the product, it can look quite daunting at first as it is so dark, but once massaged into the skin it dissipates into a lovely light bronze colour, perfect for those who don't want to go too dark. ( i would look rediculous with a really dark tan!)
After applying i make sure i thoroughly wash my hands, but i have never experienced it transferring onto my clothes or fabrics. The smell of the tanner does linger slightly but i actually do like the smell of it, however it is not overpowering so it won't clash with whatever fragrance you choose to wear.
I bought this instant tanner for £5.99 in Boots which i think is a very reasonable price for the quality of the product. Obviously it is not longlasting but as it is so easy to reapply this is not a hassle. I like that i can just wash it off in the shower before bedtime and it won't transfer and get all ove my bed sheets like traditional self tanners. I would definitely recommend this product, it is ideal for those who would like to top up an existing tan or for those like me who just want to give themselves a bit of colour (instead of milky white!). It really gives a natural bronze colour and isn't orange in any way which i have found with other instant tanners i have used, i mean who wants to look like an Oompa Loompa?!
I am giving this product 5 Dooyoo stars as i really cannot think of any bad points to this product. It deserves it.
Thanks for reading
P.S - Please wear sun protection, this product does not protect from UVA rays in any way:)
I am quite pale skinned and have always hated it, if I go out in the sun (even with sun tan lotion on) I go red then peel, not attractive. I was going on holiday to Italy for two weeks and wanted to look a little tanned before going as I didn't want to look like I was a tourist on the beach amongst the toned, tanned Italian people.
As a fan of Rimmel products, I searched the shelves for some fake tan, deciding that that would help me start off slightly tanned and not so lily white looking. I chose this Sun Shimmer Instant Tan brand and went for a light shade as I didn't want to come out looking orange. After reading the instructions and ingredients, I had a shower and a good scrub/exfoliate of my skin. Once buffed and dried it was time to get bronzed. On opening the lid the liquid inside can only be described as very dark brown, I was concerned that I had picked one that was far too dark for my liking but after checking the lable thought maybe it would settle down once on my skin, only one was to find out....
I put some in the palm of my hand and started to run it into my skin, well OMG!! I have never known anything to be such hard work in all my life, trying to get the colour even and stop the streaks was almost impossible. My palms ended up brown, a tell tale sign it is out of a bottle, my legs were relatively even but after spending so long doing my arms and legs I couldn't be bothered to do anything else as I was on my own so couldn't have done my back anyway. Needless to say I couldn't really show off said tan because it would have been obvious that my arms and legs were a different colour that the rest of my body. I showered and scrubbed and managed to eventually vanish the tan. I instead went for the red and peeling look. You may have to have more patience with this product than I had. I found it really hard to get it even and there are certain areas of your body you can't see, so you would need another pair of hands anyway. It does end up a lovely colour and should I ever decide to try it again, I would use this product. I would need to cover my hands though as brown palms is not a nice sign. It has a nice smell to it as well, quite sweet smelling.
I like the idea of having a tan you don't have to commit yourself to. If you want a 'proper' tan you have to go on holiday - let's face it, the sun in England isn't really worth it. If you want a fake tan, you have it for a good while and have to keep it up otherwise it goes blotchy and awful. That's why the idea of having a tan 'makeup' is really really amazing to me! You can just apply it when you need it, and wash it off when you're done for the day.
I bought this product with the intention of giving my legs a bit more of a glow at the beginning of the summer. Since I spent most of spring (when it was properly sunny) in jeans and T-shirts, my arms and face got brown, but my legs stayed lily-white. It was less of a full-blown fake tan and more of a colour matching!
The first impressions of the product itself are quite awful, however. The only way I can describe the colour and texture of the cream is like slightly runnier Marmite. It really is black! You're going to be careful not to stain anything around you with this, because judging by the colour it won't come out very easily either. The cream is quite good, a small bit goes quite a long way and is easy to rub in. I just found that the colour wasn't particularly nice! I know that fake tans are always a little bit orangey, and it's never going to be a proper substitute for the real thing, but my legs honestly looked like I'd smothered them in beef gravy. Really really thin beef gravy! It may have been because my legs were so pale to begin with, but I gave it to my mum to try, and the colour still didn't look in any way natural. The only saving grace is that it does wash off with relative ease!
I can't really comment on the price as it was bought a while ago, but I probably wouldn't have spent over the £15 mark for it. You also get a decent sized bottle which ends up going quite a long way as well.
I always wear this product whenever I go on a night out. It's great and it last's all night!
I usually use a fake tan anyway, but use this to make my tan look deeper when i'm out. I apply this tan after I have had a shower and moisterised. I used to apply it with my hands, but found that the product stuck to my fingers and was very hard to wash off even when I tried to scrub them... hence I now use a tanning mitt, which you can find at places like superdrug/boots. The tan goes on very smoothly, and the results are never streaky. If you find that you put too much on, it's easy to wash off and start again. I find that the colour of the tan is more of an olive colour, and never looks orange.
The greatest thing about the product is that you don't have to worry about the state of the fading of the tan because you just wash it off when your done, and reapply when you want to look tanned again.
One negative I would say is that you have to be careful if it is raining out, or if someone drops a drink down you. If the body area with this tan on gets wet, it will rub off. (this can be a problem if you have your legs out on a rainy night). If the tan does not get wet however it will last a long time, usually until you next have a shower.
I do use this product regularly and would be lost without it. I love the colour it produces, the easiness of the application and the longlasting effects. I have given it 4 stars because of the way in which it stains your hands if applying the tan with them.
I think that Rimmel's SunShimmer Instant Tan Make-up is an absolutely brilliant idea. I only ever use fake tan on my legs - I think my face, arms and decollete have enough colour already - and I only use it in the spring and summer months. After going on a recent shopping trip which involved matching a top to a summer skirt, I was horrified by the sheer whiteness of my legs. Having lived in jeans and trousers over the winter, now that milder weather has arrived it's definitely time for me to get my legs out.
Rimmel's bronzy-brown tube (with the words 'Wash Off' highlighted in yellow) gives you a very good hint that this is a tanning//fake tan product. The tube contains 125ml of product, and is currently available (24th April) at Boots for £5.99. It's £6.12 at Superdrug, but they are running an offer of 'buy one get one free on selected Rimmel products'. It comes in three shades, Fair, Light and Medium, and is available in either Matte or Shimmer effect.
This fake tan/make-up is designed to be used on your face and body, but as I only use it on my legs I can only comment on how it works there. The lotion does not contain any sunscreen, and, as the instructions on the back of the tube state: 'Repeated exposure of unprotected skin while tanning may increase the risk of skin ageing, skin cancer, and other harmful effects to the skin even if you do not burn'. As both my parents, my brother and myself, have all suffered some form of skin cancer (thankfully non-malignant), I would go along with the instructions and say for heaven's sake, wear a sunscreen with a good protection factor!
The product is designed to give colour immediately, and it certainly does that. It comes out of the tube as a dark brown lotion, which means that you can instantly see where it is going. A lot seems to come out of the tube at once if you're not careful, and at first it does seem alarmingly dark. However, it's easy to rub in and gives excellent coverage. I find that the best way of applying this product is to use an applicator mitt, such as Boots Soltan Self-Tan Applicator Mitt (which I have also reviewed). I love the idea of applying some in the morning as part of my beauty routine, and not having to go through all the palaver normally associated with applying fake tan. Having to walk around like John Wayne after a long day in the saddle is not an attractive look!
I think you would find this an absolute must for your summer holiday, and for getting rid of the winter's pallor. For years now I have spent time in the summer, especially just before going away on holiday, applying fake tan to my legs. I have made myself put up with the stickiness, the smell, the wide-legged walk, and having to sleep in old sheets so that I don't make a mess of the good bed linen. And of course waiting to see whether I've applied it carefully enough so that it didn't streak. I think a lot of people will sympathize with me - these are problems that apply to all but the most experienced users of fake tan.
In the interests of science, I've experimented with applying this product a few minutes after putting on a good layer of suntan lotion. It went on well, with no streaks, and gave an even coverage even on top of another product. However, as recommended on the tube, you need to be careful to wash your hands thoroughly after use, as the palms of your hands will be dark brown. I found that washing with soap, and paying attention to the spaces between my fingers, did the trick.
I first tried the Fair version, as I have very pale skin, and chose the Matte effect rather than the Shimmer because I thought it would look more natural. However, I found that this did not give me the colour I was hoping for, so I then bought the Medium Matte, which is just right, and which gives me the lovely brown colour I would want from a fake tan when going on holiday.
As far as fake tan products go, in my opinion this one actually smells quite nice. When I was about 15 (longer ago than I'd care to admit), I remember concocting my own fake tan lotion by blending instant coffee powder with baby oil. Can you imagine!! The fragrance of that delightful invention was no more enticing than the fake tan smell we are all used to. By comparison, Rimmel's product is perfectly pleasant. I didn't find it at all sticky, and it stayed on me and not on my sheets!
Although the tube states that the product stays on for 24 hours, I have not yet had the chance to test this product in the rain, or in a swimming pool. However, I find that if I am very careful during and after my shower not to rub, and to gently pat my legs dry, the coverage either fades or cleans away altogether, with no streaking.
This 'make-up' looks lovely on my legs, is easy to apply, and does what is promised, so I am happy to give it five stars.
(This review is also on Ciao, under the same user name.)
Rimmel Sun Shimmer does work for instantly giving you a tan, it really does shimmer too but not so much that you look like you've doused yourself in glitter, it just gives a nice sheen which i think makes your legs look slimmer and longer. It is a very dark tan too so if you are just wanting to add a little bit of colour then this one probably isn't for you.
I'm quite fussy about the smell that a fake tan product has, some of them smell really powerful and you can tell a mile off that you're wearing fake tan because of the smell! This one wasn't quite so strong smelling but does have that classic fake tan scent, it would of been nicer if it had more of a flavour too it so that it smelled nice on my skin.
I didn't find that this washed off very easily especially on my hands! What a nightmare i had trying to remove it all from my hands, i looked pretty ridiculous with bright orange hands that were a totally different colour to the rest of me. I've learned my lesson about "fake tan hands" now though and i always use gloves when i'm applying it.
The price of this fake tan has gone down since it was first released too, i used to pay at least £7 for it but now you can get it for £5 or less. For the price of it, it does do a good job at giving you an instant tan.
I started using this product about 5 years ago and i have never used anything else. I have never been very good at applying fake tan and it tended to either be streaky or i would end up with orange hands! My sister recommended this to me and at first i started using medium matte shimmer. This was a lovely colour and gave me a really sunkissed look. I now use the medium matte without the shimmer as it looks more realistic.
This also comes in a mose and you can also get one especially for your legs. I use the all over face and body sunshimmer and it cost around £6 from boots or superdrug, I tend to buy this in bulk when it is on special offer. Boots and superdrug have always got special deal on, either buy one get one free or half price.
you will definately need a tanning mitt to apply this as for some reason even though it washes off quite easily on your face and body it tends to get ingraind in to the lines your palms!
When it fisrt comes out it looks really dark and you only need a small amount for most areas, if you use too much it can be quite hard to blend in and is more likely to come off on your clothes.
It gives a lovely colour and stays until you wash it off, it has never come off on my clothes as i have always been very careful to use a small amount but if you use too much it will. although it doesnt stain.
It doesnt smell of anything so you are not left with a horrible smell like most fake tans, you have to be quite careful when you are putting on your clothes but if you leave enough time, usually 5 or ten miuntes to dry its fine.
You still have to be careful around the knee's and elbows like most fake tans but just a small amount will go a long way.
you can also get some just for your face.
Firstly, Rimmel is one of my all time favourite makeup brands. I own an assortment of Rimmel eye shadows, blushers and eyeliners and they never fail to disappoint, additionally the range isn't too expensive which is an added bonus. Recently, I realised my skin was almost milk coloured obviously with it being Winter, the pale look really doesn't look attractive on me so I decided to invest in this 'Rimmel Sun Shimmer' to give me that healthy, sun kissed glow I required. The retail price for this product is around £6 (at Boots) which isn't too expensive compared to other brands.
The product itself is contained in a plastic tube which is easily squeezable. Also, the colour of the bottle is a beautiful, golden colour which is obviously appropriate for a tanner. The name of the product 'Sun Shimmer' is visibly displayed so it's easy to distinguish from other ranges. Overall, the packaging is sleek and professional in appearance and looks perfect on my vanity table.
Additionally, the product itself isn't runny - it's relitavely thick and won't make a mess. In colour, the liquid is a very deep, pigmented gold considering I got the shade for fair skin however once you distribute it evenly over your skin the colour dumbs down a little leaving a soft, sunkissed look. I found the product took alot of blending before a natural finish could be achieved but once blended it looks stunning and really does make your skin shimmer! I applied this pretty much over all my body, excluding my face though because I have quite sensitive skin. The tan is a wash off one and lasts pretty much all day (at least 8 hours!) it is perfect if you are going out or just don't want that ghostly white look.
I would most definitely buy this product again, it gave me the natural, glow I wanted to achieve and made my skin go from dull to shimmering. Remember, the tanner comes in 3 shades (dark, medium and fair) so choose the one that's appropriate for your skin tone. I shall probably repurchase this in the summer months because I imagine if you applied this over a tan you could get fantastic, beautiful shimmery skin. My new favourite tanner! 5 stars.
With winter fog shrouding the landscape I feel shut in and fed up so yesterday I thought i'd have a pamper day and get all my beauty products out and go through them, throwing away what was nearly empty and putting in place the one's I've been bought for xmas.
Whilst doing this I came across a tube of Rimmel sunshimmer instant tan, this was bought by me earlier this year from Superdrug and it cost me £4.99 so while I was feeling shut in and fogged in the mind I decided to brighten up my day and use this to tan my skin and cheer myself up.
The tube I bought is a 125ml tube and the colour of the tube is a golden brown with a flip up lid. This can be used on the face, neck, legs and the arms for a quick and easy tan to cheer you up or for if your are going out or on holiday.
A tan always seems to make you look a little healthier and as this suits my skin tone it comes out a good tanned colour not orange or too brown, but just a nice subtle golden tan colour.
The cream inside the tube is a dark brown colour and to apply it's best to put the cream onto a cotton wool ball so that you get an even spread of the tanning cream, you can put it on with your hands if you like but need to wash them straight away after using this.
I apply it just like foundation starting on the face and working my way down the neck, then rubbing it on the top of the arms working it down to my hands for an even all over tan.
It doesn't take long to apply and a little goes a long way, which is good as it's a bit of a luxury item to buy at nearly £5 a tube.
This then tans the skin straight away and will last until you wash it off, I bought the medium matte colour of tan which suits my skin tone and it works well for a good all over tan. You can use it on your legs if you like but if your just going out in a t-shirt and jeans you can just put it on your arms, neck and face.
I like this as it's quick to use, easy to apply and comes out really well, not streaky of orange but even and nice, giving your skin a healthy glowing look that feels good and gives you confidence and cheers you up.
Before a night out I like to have a nice tan to make me feel that little bit more glamorous. I am a real fan of fake tan and love st tropez. However, occasionally I try to save a bit of money by using new products that I can apply myself. This rimmel sunshimmer instant tan makeup is something that caught my eye when scouring the makeup counter for new ideas.
This product, sounds great as it offers you the opportunity to see the tanning lotion going on. I have used very many products in the past where you have to wait overnight to see the results devlop. But with this tan makeup you can see the results immediately. This is what appealed to me the most as sometimes I want a tanning makeup that I can put on last minute.
When opening this plastic bottle. I was impressed by the smell. It is a lot more pleasing than the normal tanning creams as it has a more perfumed scent to it. I love tanning wipes, but it has to be said they do smell. I think they smell quite like bovril!! and that is not really the alluring scent I am going for. However, this rimmel sunshimmer is much more pleasing to the nose. Although it still tends to get quite sickly after a while.
I was suprised by how dark the makeup was when it came out of the bottle. I have a fairly dark complexion, but this makeup did look a little too much like gravy browning for my liking. Although it sounds good in theory, I found it very difficult to apply without is looking messy. It really left the most orangy false look that did not suit my needs at all. The makeup, I found was very streaky. Maybe this is just due to my rubbish application skills but I did follow instructions.
I also found that despite washing my hands after application. the palms of my hands still held the telltale orange stains of false tan application. I was not at all happy with the result of this tan makeup. In my opinion it looked really cheap and unattractive. I would much rather look pasty and intresting that streaky and cheap. And in my experience this made me look streaky and cheap.
This sun shimmer is described as a natural looking tan. But, I would beg to differ as I thought I looked as if I had been tangoed!! I will never use this product again. There are so many positives going for this makeup. However, in my experience the actual product falls way short of the mark. I just think it is far too intense a colour and far too streaky to be any good.
I'm not usually one for using fake tan, I have tried it in the past but was very unimpressed with it, but I also tan quite nicely naturally. However before I went on holiday on a night out I decided that I was looking a bit pasty for my outfit and was in need of a bit of colour. Not wanting to go for the normal fake tan type products I scoured the selves for an alternative and came across Rimmel Sun Shimmer Face and Body Make Up. Although described as an instant tan it also stated that this product simply washed off so I decided to give it ago, after all if I hated it I could just wash it off.
Rimmel Sun Shimmer looks just like most fake tans, it comes in a shimmery bronze coloured squeezable bottle with the word Rimmel at the top of the bottle and the words Sun Shimmer written down the length of the bottle. There is a picture of a sun on the front of the bottle as well with 24hour written in it, this is the length of time the product should last if not washed off. Other information on the front of the bottle is that this product can be used for both the face and body and simply washes off when required. It has a plastic flip lid which is very easy to open, even if your hands are a bit slippery from using the product. Upon first glance at the back of the bottle the information can appear daunting as the whole of the back of the bottle is covered with small writing, however after reading it most of it is in various languages. The information consists of various warnings such as wash hands immediately after using this product, avoid contact with eyes and keep away from children. The most important part is that Sun Shimmer does not actually protect you skin from the sun, it also goes on to list various risks of continuous exposure of unprotected skin to the sun. The packaging is quite basic and a little on the plain side but does contain all the necessary information.
The Product and How to Use
This is a simple product to use, you simply squeeze a small amount of the product into you hands and rub it evenly into your skin on the areas you wish to 'tan'. One thing I noticed straight away is that this product did not have that horrible indescribable smell that fake tan products usually have, the fragrance was in no way over powering and had more of a flowery smell to it which was quite pleasant. The liquid inside the tube look just like the usual fake tan products I had used in the past, it was the same consistency as moisturiser and was dark brown in colour.
I found this product was very easy to use, it rubbed in reasonably easy giving my skin a healthy glow. The colour I chose was Fair Matte which was just right for my skin tone. After applying my skin did not appear too dark and false looking, I found this product left my skin with a very natural colour. The product absorbed into my skin easily and did not leave it feeling greasy, the fragrance was lovely, just like I had used a moisturiser, the fragrance was something I was particularly worried about as I hate the smell of fake tan products. Also another bonus with Rimmel Sun Shimmer is it is transfer resistant, I was a little unsure about this as many products promise to be transfer resistant but none of them ar 100% however after a night out wearing this product I found none of it had transferred onto my clothes.
As for the claim this product makes about washing straight off, this is also true. I only wanted to wear this product for one night so the following morning I had a bath to was the Sun Shimmer off. I was a little worried that the water would make the instant tan go streaky however it washed off relatively easy with soap and water. There may have been a slight tint of it left on my skin but the majority of the product was gone and my skin was back to its normal colour.
This product can be bought from shops such as Boots and Superdrug and usually retails between £5 and £6. This price was for a 125ml tube, whilst this is quite expensive the product is quite long lasting. Personally I find this product long lasting as it is not something that I use all of the time, it is something I would only use occasionally.
This product can be purchased for around £3.99 from places like superdrug, body care etc and heres why I like it.
Over the years I have tried many fake tan products you know the ones exfoliate before hand and gradually build a 'natural looking tan' over time, you apply praying that this time it will work this one has to be better than all the rest. You stand still for ages waiting for it to dry because you don't want streaks, you wake up the next day hoping this time it will be fine and then oh no its streaky again orange patches everywhere damn that tanning moisturizer that was going to be the one, you then spend the days after covered up and smelling like burnt skin until its gone away lol.
Well this is different my friend introduced me to it first and I soon had to purchase my own. Its like a foundation for all over the great thing is you can see it going on, I have 'light matte' think there are a few different shades this one gives me the healthy glow I desire. You can see it going on there which is great and means there is no risk of doing the same patch again because you think you missed it as sometimes open with moisturising tan builders. It goes on easily and dries quite fast you also don't need to completley cover yourself in it (unless you want to) and I just do my arms legs and where ever else is on show on a night out. It smells more like make up than the smell you get from fake tan which I always think smells like burnt skin and I never quite feel clean when I wear tanning moistuiser either don't know if thats just me though lol.
Do make sure you wash your hands as you apply else you will end up with those tell tale orange hands. If you over do it on your body don't panic because it wash off you can easily blend in.
The sun shimmer does not rub off on clothes aslong as you wait until its dry which is great and I have been out in white tops with this on as has my friends with no problems It also comes in shimmer so beware when buying you want matte for the tan look shimmer is good for a night out and it does make you shine.
I also post on other sites under the same name
I found this product at a car boot sale, hardly ever used and sold for only 50p! (But there were two - so I bought both!) So the moment I saw this, I thought why not? Give it a try. You may get amazing results or you may get terrible results. I heard other people's opinions on this product before and some people like this product, others hate it, but most people I asked liked it.
I think this tanning sun shimmer is average for me because there are good things about this product but also there are bad things about this product.
The advantages of this product is that you only need on applicant to get a tan, and you only have to wait a little while for it to dry (but make sure you wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty with tan! Just don't wear colors like white or yellow - wear colors like black!)
I don't know if this point is a good thing or a bad thing, but I think it can be both - the product washes off with soap and water. I think it's good if you want to get rid of the tan, but it's not great if you're walking home bare legged in the rain or you wash you hands before eating or after going to the toilet. Don't think this product is not suitable for places such as the UK, due to weather. But even , abroad where it's the best place to wear it, the tanning stuff with come off when sweating and leave nasty streaky lines (unless you can get hold of some tanning wipes you may be safe!)
When I first tried this product, (it was a couple of moths ago as the weather's been impressive this summer) it made my legs look orange rather than brown and it did not look natural at all! It made me look like an Ompa Lompa! Also, my arms only looked slightly brown they weren't like proper brown, so the combination didn't go brilliantly!
Also before you try this product, make sure you shave your legs cause the color can show through the hairs of your legs!
But this product in shops it is expensive - about five pounds for a tube, but I will probably try it again when I got abroad next month and see what results I get then and I will edit this review when I get those results!
This product is sold in all superdrug, Boots and various supermarkets for about the same price, of five pounds.
