St.Moriz Self Tanning Lotion
Advantages: easy to apply, pleasant smell, good results
Disadvantages: not 100% streak-free ( but is there a product that is?) can't gauge how much is left in the can
I've used fake tans for more years than I care to remember and hate to think how much it has cost me to have a bit of colour on my face and body. I've tried the really expensive mousses/ creams/sprays to the very cheap ones all with varying results. I've experienced the 'tango' effect as well as the speckled/freckled effect and have, of course, been streaked. To be honest I was just about to give up on this whole pallaver until I read a few reviews on St Moriz fake tans so decided to give it a go.
If I hadn't had the benefit of reading the reviews I probably would have walked past this product thinking it was cheap so therefore nasty but, believe me, it's well worth a try for £2.99.
The can comes as pictured and there's a choice of mousse or spray in 150ml sizes so I opted for the mousse as I'm used to using St Tropez ones. With a quick glance on the reverse of the can I saw that the directions for use were as for all makes of tanning products plus there seemed to be no 'nasty' ingredients listed.
When I opened the lid I expected to find the smell of 'guess who's just applied fake tan?' but it actually smells very nice - just a hint of floral scent. The mousse is nice too as it's easy to dispense, easy to apply and makes the skin feel soft after use.
Of course I had to go through the rigmarole of exfoliating, moisturising and taking care of my heels, knees & elbows (boring but worth the effort in the long run) then got down to the best bit.
From experience I've always found any type of fake tan works best if you wear the soft gloves you find in hair dye kits as it means the product is easy to work in and your palms don't give the game away. I find mousses and creams are best applied with circular motions to help prevent streaking although I have yet to find a self tan which gives an absolutely 100% streak free finish.
You could be fooled into thinking you're using a much more expensive mousse - I still can't believe the price tag. It's easy to work with because it's quite dark in colour when applied so you can see exactly where you've been and also where you've missed. After a minute or so the mousse disappears so is easily absorbed into the skin.
I left it about 10 minutes or so before I got dressed & found that (as advised on the can) the tan would develop over the next 4-6 hours, which indeed it did.
I was worried that things were going too well and was half expecting the old Tango look but no, I was left with a medium bronze tan which is the nearest thing to my 'holiday' skin that I've ever achieved from any other can, bottle or tube. Even after showering the tan was still just as good and I've found an application lasts me about 5 days even though I have a long bath every night.
I'm not sure if you're supposed to use this on the face but I did and didn't have any bad effects whatsoever although I must admit I'm in mature years so wouldn't recommend using it on the face without checking first.
It's suggested that you re-apply after 3-5 days if you want to achieve a darker tan or every 5-7 days for a medium one. Personally I think I'll stick to the medium because of my colouring as I don't want to scare anyone lol.
The only problem I've found is, due to the packaging, it's difficult to know how much I've used but for this price I think it is well worth stocking up at Home Bargains or Qualitysave as the shelf life has a couple of years.
So, forget your Fake Bake, St Tropez and Sun Lab. - I'm going to stick to St Moriz because it's hassle-free, gives an (almost) streak-free tan, smells OK and my skin feels soft and moisturised.
Summary: well worth a try for £2.99
