Whenever I have a big night out with the girls fake tan is an essential for me. In the past I have always used a gradual tanning product as they are really easy to use but I started to use a cheap product called St Moritz on my legs as my legs never seemed to take the gradual tan well and just wouldn't tan to the level I expected. I was really excited at Christmas when I opened up a St Tropez fake tanning gift set from one of my friends as I have always seen St Tropez as the crème de crème of fake tans and never been able to justify shelling out for it! In the set were the fake tanning mousse and two small bottles of product designed to improve the tanning experience and one of these products was the body moisturiser which I shall review today.
The St Tropez body moisturiser comes in a small white bottle which has a black lid and for me it is instantly recognisable as a St Tropez product because I am familiar with the branding. The bottle in my gift set is just an 85ml bottle but you can purchase a larger 240ml bottle on amazon for around £11 should you be interested in purchasing it.
When it comes to having a nice looking fake tan it really is imperative that your skin is soft and well nourished to avoid any dry patches standing out like a sore thumb when you apply your tan. We are told on the bottle that this hydrating body moisturiser is packed with ingredients which will keep your skin looking sleek, supple and hydrated every day. You are advised to use this moisturiser in between fake tanning days to keep your skin in tip top condition.
When I had my last girls night out I used all of my St Tropez fake tanning products and I had been particularly impressed with the body polish which I had used in the bath to exfoliate my skin and so I had high hopes for the other products in the range. This body moisturiser is quite a thin consistency and light too but what is great is it rubs nicely in to the body when you use it. I tend to suffer with dry skin on my legs the most and that is where I can end up with tanning disasters so I used this product on my legs for a couple of days prior to applying my tan but also for the days after I had applied my tan to keep the colour in tip top condition. The body moisturiser has quite a nice scent I think that smells like the St Tropez in my opinion but it doesn't linger too long. It is easily absorbed in to the skin and it really does make my skin feel lovely and soft after I have used it. It does seem to combat any dry skin issue that I occasionally have on my legs too which of course is really important.
This is actually a really good quality body moisturiser and I did feel that it helped to maintain my tan on my legs. My only issue with it is that it is quite expensive but a little does go a long way. My main grumble is that you are meant to use the bottle within twelve months and I am not sure that given how infrequently that I go out that I would get to use the full bottle. Whilst I suppose I could use it as an all the time moisturiser I do like nice fruity smelling or perfumed products such as Soap and Glory or body butters as well. I would be most likely to purchase this in another gift set along side the actual St Tropez tan which would mean I would be getting better value for my money I think in terms of usage. I do think it is a really good product though for prolonging your fake tan and keeping it looking tip top.
Thank you for reading my review!
I received a bottle of St. Tropez tan optimiser body moisturiser in a gift set that I bought myself shortly before Christmas, from Boots. I wasn't particularly fussed about the moisturiser itself and was only buying the gift set for the actual bronzing lotion, and as the gift set was the same price as a bottle of that then I would not be paying extra for the other items you get in the set, so instead they were just a nice added bonus!
It states on the bottle that well nourishished, deeply moisturised skin is their top tip for a longer lasting tan. Therefore this indicates that by using this tan optimiser on a regular basis it will make your tan last longer.
To do this it states that you must exfoliate with St. Tropez body polish before applying the moisturiser. In my opinion you do not need to use St. Tropez body polish, I also received a bottle of this in the gift set and it does as good a job as any other body polish I have used. Then to moisturise with the tan optimiser all over your body inbetween self tan applications.
I have been using this moisturiser since I bought it, I have not always moisturised inbetween self tan applications but when I got this I started to, to see if it actually did make a difference in the length of time my tan lasts. In my opinion it does not. The moisturiser is good and makes my skin soft, that I have noticed straight away, but it does not seem to make a difference on how long my tan lasts. I have tested this and used it inbetween self tan applications, and alternatively used a completely different moisturiser instead from the Body Shop. My tan would last around the same amount of time no matter which one I used.
Therefore, is it worth paying more for a 'tan optimising' body moisturiser as opposed to your usual moisturiser? I would say no. I will not be paying for a bottle of this moisturiser in the future for the simple reason that I like other brands' moisturisers that are cheaper than this, but do the exact same job. I also like my moisturisers to smell fruity, this one does not really have a scent to it, it just seems refreshing.
It is a good moisturiser however, and does leave my skin feeling soft and smooth for a day or so after applying, but if you are wanting a moisturiser that makes your tan last longer, then this is not really the product for you. I have yet to come across a moisturiser that actually does this, I don't think I will ever buy one for that reason either, and instead will just stick to re-applying the self tan if I want my tan to last longer!
The bottle I got with the gift set it 120ml. I don't think you can buy this size by itself usually though as I cannot seem to find it on the internet. Instead it is 240ml which Boots sell for £12.26.
I'm a big fan of faking it when it comes to tanning and I've had a few St Tropez spray tans in the past. When I had my last one I bought a set of St Tropez products containing this moisturiser which contains a tan extender by way of something called L-Tyrosine. Apparantly, L-Tyrosine is an amino acid which is meant to synthesise the productions of melanin in the body which in turn is meant to increase the skins tanning ability (or summat like that!) so it's meant to prolong the life of your real tan should you have one whilst helping to keep skin moisturised to help prolong the life of your fake tan. I don't know if L-Tyrosine has any prolonging effects on a fake tan, perhaps there's a Dooyooer out there who knows.
The moisturiser comes in a bottle as in the picture although the graphics are ever so slightly different now and the lid has a top which flips up when you press down the edge of it. The cream smells nice and fresh due to the aloe vera content and the consistency of the cream is not at all thick yet not too thin that it is overly runny. A little goes a long way however and it spreads well over a larger surface area.
The bottle suggests using the cream after tanning which suggests it is useful as an aftersun and the aloe vera content is something which is found in many aftersun lotions. I have recently been using this as an aftersun and have found it very cooling and soothing due to it's thinness in texture which doesn't take a lot of rubbing in. My husband has also been using this moisturiser on his sunburnt back and it has soothed his skin. We both have sensitive skin and this moisturiser has been surprisingly gentle. It is very easily absorbed and smells light but with a lingering fragrance. The scent is pleasant but it does remind me a little of old ladies (in a nice fragrant way!).
I don't know about the tan optimizing qualities of the tan as I don't tan well naturally enough to test that out, but as a general skin moisturiser and a cooling aftersun, this gets my thumbs up. I bought a pack containing a small bottle of this, St Tropez body polish and some St Tropez wipes for £15 and I think for a smallish bottle of about 250ml, it's around a tenner. As I said, a little goes a long way so for a good brand name, it's reasonably priced I feel.
I absolutely love having a tan and usually because the weather in England is so sh*t I have to resort to using a fake tan instead to get me that "sun-kissed glow" Im looking for. Now I think of St Tropez as like the holy grail of fake tans but obviously because it is such a good brand it costs a lot of money meaning Ive never been able to afford it before. But my mom, knowing what a fake tan addict I am bought me a St Tropez set for Christmas which not only had the fake tan bottle but also contained a St Tropez moisturiser and a St Tropez exfoliating cream so I thought it might be time to get around to reviewing the moisturiser.

A Bit About The Product [ According to the bottle]:
Can be used on any skin type.
This moisturiser contains a "luxurious" blend of ingredients to keep your skin looking sleek, supple and intensely hydrated.
Great for keeping up that fabulous tan and not only that but it promises to give you the most natural looking tan possible.
Sounds Great Doesn't It?
How To Use:
This moisturiser can be used prior to fake tanning and afterwards to keep your tan looking even and to make it last even longer.
But I would suggest if you are using this prior to fake tanning to moisturise with this the day before all oer you body and then on the day but just apply to areas where you have very dry skin to prevent any streaking when it comes to applying the tan.
Results [When used before the fake tan]:
I had really high hopes for this cream because of the great reputation that this brand has and I am happy to say that I was not left disappointed when I tried it out.
The day before I used the fake tan I did all the usual exfoliating and then used this moisturiser and it did leave my skin feeling really fresh and clean.
When I can to apply the tan I was really happy to find I didnt end up with any streaks and the tan did look really natural which I think did have a lot to do with this cream because Ive never managed to get a fake tan to look that natural before.
Results [When used after fake tan application]:
I find that when I apply a fake tan it doesnt last as long as I would like it to and Im left with my pale, white skin again after a few days so I continued to use this cream after I had applied the tan to try and make the tan last longer and make it continue to keep looking even and fresh.
I am very happy to say that using this made my tan last about a week which is much longer than most in my experience and even though it lasted so long the colour didnt fade and still looked as natural as when I had first applied it.
A little goes a really long way with this cream and I only tend to use a tiny amount and that covers all my body so one bottle should last you a really long time.
The cream seems to sink in almost as soon as you put it on your skin and immediately your skin feels really fresh and clean and it is really moisturising which stays on your skin for days afterwards.
The smell of this is pretty hard to describe and the only way I can is to say that it smells really fresh with a slight hint of cocoa butter which is really nice. This covers up any of that horrid fake tan smell you could be left with after application.
I highly recommend this cream to anyone whether you use fake tan or not because it really is that good. Not only does it make you fake tan last a lot longer but it is really good for your skin as well because almost straight away it made my skin feel fresh and clean and not greasy and sticky like some fake tan creams. I strongly suggest everyone goes out and buys a bottle of this because this is a perfect example of sometimes its better to spend more money for better quality.
A bottle of this will set you back around £12 which I'm my opinion is great value for money when you consider the amazing results. I'll definitely be going to buy myself a new bottle of this when mine runs out!!
