The first pair of "expensive" sunglasses that I bought were Oakley Eye Jackets. I had had several pairs of cheap glasses <£10.00 but thought it time to get a decent pair. I bought a pair of Oakley Eye Jackets with blue frames and a multi couloured tinted lense. There were several good things about these glasses but one of the best is their excellent use for driving. Oakley Eye Jackets are wrap around glasses and completely enclose your eyes so that no unfiltered light gets through. I have found this to be very usefull on those summer drives. The lenses in Oakleys are quite simply some of the best that I have ever looked through. There is excellent clarity even in the brightest sunlight. As the lenses are polarised and what ever else Oakley do to them things do not appear too dark or dull but the brightness and intensity of the sun is reduced suitabily. The glasses have a plastic frame which I have found to be quite flexible (I have not yet managed to break the frames). The arms of the glasses can pop out of the socket but they are easily popped back in. The down fall of these glasses came one day when I dropped them (not the smartest thing to do) and naturally they landed on cencrete, lenses first. There was and still is a large chip / scratch right in the field of view on one of the lenses. Fortunately the glasses were covered under my home contents insurance and I claimed and then bought a new and different pair of Oakleys, but that is another review.
I'm currently on my second pair of Eyejackets after my first pair snapped on the earsock joint on BOTH arms. I spoke to Oakley's customer service dept and was told that since my pair were out of warranty, they wouldn't replace the arms free of charge. So, why did I buy another pair? Because they're the best glasses I've owned! The only gripe I have (apart from the fault on the arms) is that they do sit very close to your face and your eyelashes may touch the inside of the lens. Hopefully my current pair will last for a few years as I paid a bit extra for the Full Metal Jacket (.45) instead.
For a bottom of the range pair of sunglasses these eyejackets are da bomb. From a manufacturer like Oakley you can't expect anything but quality but these are also great value. I bought mine for only £50 because the centre logo was scratched, a saving of £20. These shades give great UV protection and also protect against harmful blue light. Although Oakley do make a lot of stuff up about their sunnies (in the owners leaflet it says the lenses are blasted with 12 microns of iridium) they actually are really good quality. The other advantage of these shades over a £7.99 pair from Boots is that they are cool to wear, you won't look like a fool in these babies. I would probably rather own one of the more expensive items in the Oakley range but for the price these are the best you can get. My pair are just black with black iridium lenses but if you want something a bit cooler be warned: the cooler the colours the more expensive the glasses. The customer support from Oakley is also excellent. I snapped one of the earstems on my eye jackets and even though the glasses were out of warranty (the optician didn't realise they only have a 12 month warranty) I got them sent away for repair. The opticians phoned the next week and when I went to pick them up I got a pleasant suprise: they replaced the whole sunglasses, not just the earstem so my sunnies no longer have the logo scratched off and I didn't have to pay a penny. I would recommend these glasses to anyone looking for shades with street cred but doesn't want to fork out over £100 for something they can only wear in the summer.
