I got the chance to sample the soft apple liquorice on a recent trip to Lakeland. They were offered samples of both apple and ginger flavour but as I don't like ginger I plumped for the apple flavour.
Australian soft eating liquorice is available in original, mango, strawberry, ginger and apple flavour and costs £3.43 for a 500g bag which contains about twenty five strands.
I do already like liquorice but the lady offering the samples stated that although she didn't like liquorice she did like these.
I always think of liquorice as a low fat food as a friend who had hepatitis and had to have a low fat diet was recommended them for a sweet treat. However as the first ingredient on the list is cane sugar they are probably not a healthy option.
The bag states per 100g
Energy 381 kcal
It then gives values for a 20g as a serving guide but I think realistically the 100g is more likely to be an average serving.
It does contain Wheat and gluten and may contain traces of peanuts and other nuts.
They are thick and apple green tubes and they have a very strong aroma of apples.
When you bite in it has the usual texture of liquorice but tastes nothing like it. It does just taste like apple sweets although. They are made with natural apple flavouring and which makes them taste less synthetic than other sweets I have tried. They are not chewy but as they are thick do require plenty chewing
I found them very easy to pick at and found the bag going down quicker than I hoped.
I gave them to another couple of adults who both really liked them; however my son spat it out despite liking apples. I don't think he particularly likes any foods that are green and isn't a particular fan of sweets so probably isn't in their target audience.
I do think that they are expensive but a nice alternative treat.
