Marks & Spencer Percy Pigs
Advantages: yummy, attractive to look at, not bad for you in small proportions,
Disadvantages: none... apart from you might get a bit podgy after a few packets
According to the Independant newspaper Percy Pig sweets are worth more than £10m a year and two of the M&S sweets are eaten every second! This first might give you a taste of how popular these sweets are! To me, these are my all time favourite sweets, and the only reason I ever go to M+S is because of these squashy pink pigs.
The sweets are always really soft and not too chewy, making them taste almost fresher, if thats the right word. I often get cheap sweets that are hard and tough, making them uncomfortable to eat and at the same time damage your teeth more thoroughly! Percy pigs are definitely the opposite. For this reason these sweets must be a huge hit with children, the lovable character of 'percy pig' probably adding to the popularity too.
A sweet, strawberry/raspberry flavour is the taste of the sweets, very similar to other sweets of this kind (haribos e.g.). Although the flavour isn't remarkably original, these sweets are incredibly moreish and after having a few it's very easy to eat the whole packet. Perhaps this is to do with the nice texture, or perhaps additives are used I'm not sure!
The packet cost £2.09, and at the time I discovered them I bought other sweets alongside, like wobbly worms, as part of an effort to defeat my boredom on a long plane journey abroad. I think the price is a little bit expensive, but this isn't exactly unexpected as it is by Marks and Sparks. Whenever I have had a little bit of spare cash after a shopping trip or wanted to treat myself, Percy pigs have always been the way forward.
Looking at nutritional value of Percy Pigs, they are free from artificial colours or flavourings. This doesn't change the fact though that they are incredibly bad for you on a large scale and especially bad for your teeth! As far as I know, they aren't suitable for vegetarian's as pork gelatine is used.
As well as the normal percy pigs, a whole collection of sweets has been created. Some examples include percy piglets, Percy Pig and Pals and Reversy Percy. All of them taste similar, but add variation and are nice for a change once in a while. Not only sweets now are available, there are cupcakes, biscuits and icecream (although I've not actually seen the icecream yet!) too.
If you're already a lover of Percy pigs you can buy them in a box of 26 from Marks and Spencers online for £36. Now before you look at this and curse, wondering who would ever spend that amount of money on such a thing, this is actually approx £1.40 a pack, saving you a mighty 60p a packet and £18 altogether. I have to admit though, you need to be a reallyyy big fan to purchase this.
Not only this, you can buy a Percy pig giftset. I do actually think they look really attractive and appealing and would definitely be suited for a kiddie birthday or xmas present. In a set you get: Ceramic Percy Pig money bank, Ceramic Percy Pig sweetie bowl, Percy Pig sweets (340g), Cupcake mix (80g), Fondant icing mix (50g), Percy Pig sugar cupcake decorations (15g) and all in a really cute Percy Pig decorated box. However, looking at M+S website it seems to have been out of stock for a while, so this unfortunately this product might possibly have been discontinued :( I would definitely have wanted someone to buy this for me...
All in all, the world has gone percypig mad! Hate to admit it, but I think I've got hooked too.
