Advantages: Best sour flavour for sweets i have ever tried.
Disadvantages: Lots of E numbers and sugar
I absolutely love sour sweets. If I see a new packet of sweets and it has the word "sour" on the packaging then I am almost guaranteed to buy it. Understandably, therefore, I was very excited to see that Skittles had brought out a sour version of their famous sweets.
Sour skittles come in the exact same packaging as the standard Skittles with the only difference being the green background on the sour packet as opposed to the usual red. Each packet weighs 55g and usually cost around 50 pence. I do find that there can be a lot of variation in price dependant on individual retailers though.
Inside the packet are lots of small, circular sweets with a white S stamped on each one. They come in five different colours and each colour represents a different flavour; apple, cherry, mandarin, pineapple or raspberry. You get a decent amount of sweets in each packet.
Each sweet has a hard outer sugar coating and this is where all the sour flavouring is. Once you have bitten into the sweet you will find that there is a softer, chewy centre. I really liked the flavouring of these sweets. Many sour sweets that I have tried in the past have lost the sharp sour taste very quickly but this isn't something that happened with the Sour Skittles. Nor were they too sour, which is another common mistake. I felt that they really got the balance right and they tasted great. They immediately became one of my favourite sweets and something I have repurchased many times. They make standard Skittles seem boring in comparison and a little tasteless. I feel the added sharp sour taste really helps to bring the sweets to life.
Obviously these sweets aren't the best for you. Just looking quickly at the list of the ingredients I can see several E numbers listed and I know they do contain a lot of sugar. However, they are definitely intended to be a once in a while treat and so this isn't something I have great issue with. I can overlook a lot when something tastes this good!
Summary: Much better than original Skittles.
