Starburst Tongue Tangles Chews
Advantages: Quirky and different.
Disadvantages: Fiddly wrappers.
Discovering these sweets was a happy accident. On my latest grocery shop online, I just happened to type in "Tangled" into the search engine, as my daughter is a big fan of the Disney movie, and I was looking for something nice to treat her with. Unfortunately, the store had no movie merchandise, but the search did produce a surprising result: these lovely sweets, Tongue Tangles, made by Starburst, or Opal Fruits if you are of a certain generation! The sweets are basically fruity chews with a tangy liquid centre. They come in a sharing bag and cost about £1 from most shops.
The sweets come in three basic flavours: Blueberry and Lemon, Banana and Mango, and Apricot and Cherry. Unlike regular Starburst sweets, which are square shaped and wrapped in quite ordinary looking wrappers, Tongue Tangles have delusions of grandeur with their smooth oval shape and glitzy, foil wrappers, which makes them look more like something special that you would have at Christmas. rather than an everyday sweet. The wrappers, I must admit were a bit fiddly to open, and my kids had some real problems with them. If your hands are even slightly damp or greasy, there is no way you will manage to open one of these wrappers, and may end up resorting to scissors in desperation. I think the glitzy wrappers are just too pretentious really, because if you saw one, you would expect a boiled sweet to be inside, rather than just a chew, which could be disappointing if you thought you were in for something a bit posh!
Despite the silly wrappers, these sweets are still fantastic, in my opinion, and what makes them extra special is the lovely sour, runny centre, that escapes as you bite into the chew. The centre is deliberately designed to provide a stark flavour contrast with the outer chew, so that you get a delicious, stimulating combination of flavours that works really well. A good example of this is the blueberry and lemon variety. The outer chew, the blueberry flavour, has a very smooth, creamy flavour, but as soon as you bite into the centre, you are hit with a sharp, sour, biting citrus hit that really livens up your mouth! As the two flavours combine as you chew, the contrasting flavours merge to produce a very tasty, moreish combination. Starburst have picked some great combinations, and I really loved the banana and mango, which was very smooth and tropical in flavour.
The nice thing about the sweets is that they have not deviated too far from the original Starburst Sweets. As soon as you pop one into your mouth, you can tell that they are Starburst sweets from the texture and smoothness of the chew. It is just that the liquid centre adds that extra twist that makes these sweets different to the norm, and it really works well.
The kids loved these, and so did I, but I'm not sure whether the very sour centres would be to every taste, particularly older people. These really are kiddie sweets, and unashamedly so, perfect for days out in the car, or taking to the theatre or cinema, as they are not likely to melt and make a mess, and the fact that they are wrapped means less cross contamination from germy young fingers.
I will definitely be buying these sweets again, and what began as a chance discovery is bound to become a firm favourite in our house. I just don't know why the manufacturers have not done more to promote this product, as I had never seen them before last week. I hope that they continue to make them, and I'd love to see what new flavour combinations they can come up with in the future. I would have given 5 stars for the sweet, but those silly wrappers have lost them a star.
Summary: A fun sweet, ideal for sharing.
