Starburst Twisted Chews
Advantages: Nice flavours, same great Starburst quality
Tremendously fruity tastes twirled tightly to be teasingly tongue tingling and tantalizing.
Well, that's a mouthful if ever I've heard one and even more of a mouthful if your mouth is full of the sweets it is referring to. Lost, ok so am I.
Starburst Twisted Chews are the new variety of fruit flavoured chews from the Mars Corporation. I am a big fan of sweets; especially fruit chewy sweets and one of the best varieties around have to be Starburst.
Starburst were originally know as Opal Fruits and I know many people who still lust whimsically after Opal Fruits and still have not embraced the name change. Opal Fruits were first produced in the UK in 1960. In 1976 they were introduced in the States under the brand name, Starburst and due to the fact that Mars wanted to standardize their product Opal Fruits were changed to the American name, Starburst in the late 1990's.
If you are unfamiliar with Starburst they can be described as fruit flavoured chews in a cube shape. They are not very big; each sweet is probably ½ inch wide and a ¼ of an inch in depth. The sweets come in a packet of probably about 10 or so sweets and each one is individually wrapped. Each packet contains a mixture of different sweets so you are guaranteed to get each flavour in the packet.
Originally Starburst/Opal Fruits only came in four flavours, strawberry, lemon, orange and lime. I don't know anyone who liked the lime flavour but I'm sure there are some of you out there!! Flavours have been added over the years and this review will focus on the flavours contained in the Starburst Twisted Chews range.
The name Twisted refers to the fact that these sweets are made up of two flavours each and twisted together to give a taste explosion!
The new flavours consist of:
Blueberry and banana
Strawberry and lime
Cherry and lemon.
The flavours I think are all quite unusual together and not always put together in different varieties of sweets so I think it's really a good combination choice by the makers of Starburst.
The chews are not hard but they do have quite a solid consistency to begin with. It's only once you have them in your mouth and begin to chew that they become chewier. I like this fact about the sweets; they become very chewy and very tasty.
The sweets are extremely juicy as well, whenever you eat one your mouth really seems to water and leaves a really nice taste in your mouth. This gels with their current marketing slogan which is, "Get your juices going." Well, with these sweets you definitely do!!
The packaging of these sweets is also quite youthful and fun and definitely would appeal to a younger connoisseur. The packaging is a bright blue colour and Starburst Twisted is written in a swirl which alludes to the twirled taste combination. Each sweet is then pictured on the packet with two colours to depict the two different flavours mixed together. For example, the blueberry and banana sweet is purple and yellow, the strawberry and lime red and green and the cherry and lemon red and yellow.
A package of sweets weighs 45g. In a full packet there are 181 calories so not too low/not too high, about what you would expect from a sweet treat.
The sweets generally retail for approximately £0.35 and can be purchased at most convenience stores. You can also buy the twisted chews in a 180g bumper pack (much like the ones you get at the cinema) and these are generally about £1.50 ish.
