Tesco Strawberry Pencils
Advantages: Cheap, taste reasonable, good for a sweet treat
Disadvantages: So sweet they can catch in your throat, odd texture
I went to the cinema last night and on my way popped into Tesco to get some popcorn (well I wasn't going to pay cinema prices was I??) and discovered upon strawberry pencils while I did. I love strawberry pencils, they are classic cinema fare, and at 38p for the bag how could I resist?? The packet is blue and red with a picture of a cartoon sausage dog heading a red ball.... Under the product name there's little white writing stating that there is no artificial flavours or colours in the bag, and a look at the ingredients suggests that it is fruit colours that give the sticks their pink hue. You get lots of pencils in the bag- My friend and I ate quite a few at the cinema yet I still had four left this morning.
On opening, you're met with a very sickly sweet strawberry smell, at which point I put it under my friend's nose and remarked that the smell didn't inspire me with belief that there were no artificial colours or flavours! I pulled out one and bit into it. The first thing to note is that the pencils are very thin and flat, not like the chunky round pencils you get in a pick and mix. The texture is also quite sticky, you have to bite quite hard to tear off a bite.
The taste is very intensely strawberry - it's very, VERY sweet. If that's what you're in the mood for then the sweets are nice, but I did find them a bit sickly. Also, on a couple of occasions I found the sugar did that weird thing where it catches and dries out your throat and you can't swallow - not nice!
However, for 38p the sweets are fine for a cheap treat, you couldn't eat many in one go so would be good for sharing. They're not healthy (but you knew that), however they also don't taste and feel as nice as one's I've had in pick and mix or even as nice as the equivalent Somerfield versions. I also really didn't like the throat catching effect.
Summary: Might buy again, but would choose a different brand if I could
