When coupled with application software such as CA ARCserve or Seagate Backup Exec, the manageability, performance and capacity are extended even further through the following features. The DLT Library automatically reads bar code labels on tapes via an integrated bar code reader, then passes the information along to the application software that automatically builds and updates a tape catalog. The catalog can then be used to locate tapes for automated restores. Therefore, the labor-intensive functions of scheduling backups, cataloging and controlling tapes and locating tapes for restore in a tape library can be automated using the DLT Library. Both models of the DLT Library support five cartridge magazines that provide an easy and quick way for administrators to remove five backup tapes, typically a week's backup, and replace them with blank tapes. Up to five libraries, containing two DLT drives each, can be placed in a single 8U Compaq rack cabinet, providing an easily manageable backup solution. The design of the Library allows the addition of more Libraries for additional performance and capacity as needed. Using the RAIT function in ARCserve 6.5 for NT, the physical libraries can be combined into one 'virtual library' and managed as if it were a physical unit. This virtual library can be managed by a single administrator from any server or workstation on the LAN, which has the ARCserve control (server) software.
