IBM 3447 ... Library provides an integrated, cost-effective solution to users who require a high-capacity automated tape library in a PC server environment.

It was developed for capacity, speed, reliability and ease of use and is based on proven Digital Linear Tape (DLT) tape drive technology and industry-leading library automation technology. The 3447 Tape Library has a dual-host function which will allow two PC servers to be attached to it and operate it as two independent libraries. This enables double throughput, concurrent read/write operation, simultaneous backup, and fault tolerance. This tape library incorporates 15 data cartridges and one or two drives in a rack-mounted or desktop configuration. Using technology based on DLT 7000 technology, the 3447 uses tape cartridges that provide 35GB native and up to 70 GB with compression (2:1). The data transfer rate is 5MB/sec native and 10MB/sec compressed (2:1). The 3447 is backward read/write compatible with legacy DLT formats. A bar code reader is standard on both models and provides fast, accurate cartridge identification, inventory and media management. The IBM 3447 has three modes of operation: Manual mode - controlled by the operator panel switches, allowing complete operator control. Autoloader mode - automatically loads the cartridges into the drives sequentially for reading and writing. Random mode - allows tapes to be selected randomly by the host for reading or writing. The tape library has two configurations: Base-single host library configuration - the 3447 is attached to a single host where the library is accessible through one SCSI port. Split-dual host library configuration - the 3447 is attached to two hosts where the 3447 appears as two separate half-sized libraries on two SCSI buses. The 3447 features industry-leading firmware in its robotic positioning system to provide self-calibration and maximum reliability and uptime. Drivers, power supply, and electronic modules are all easily replaced at your site.
