A disappointing brew from a favourite tea maker

Pukka claim that their naturally caffeine free fennel seed, cardamom and aniseed will calm and nourish you.

Ok - this may be the 'freshest' review ever. I came into work this morning ready to have my morning coffee. The office fridge is broken and the milk is off! Not going to grumble, I thought I'd have a herbal tea. Not the same as coffee I know but these things happen.

Now I love my herbal teas. I like the packaging they come in. They always feel a little more special than ordinary teas. Pukka is one of my faves! My ACTUAL favourite is their liquorice (I'll review that another day) so in my caffeine depleted state, when I found a Pukka tea bag in my drawer I felt a little more optimistic.

Pukka boxes are made from cardboard which I like because they are recyclable. The designs are always stylish and pretty. This detox box is gorgeous with blue silhouettes of slim figures stretching with plant patterns, almost like a kaleidescope effect. The orange box with 'Pukka' breaks up the design and tells us the tea is for detox and the spices in the ingredients. Each bag comes in a sealed paper bag which is blue with the same orange border, cream box on the front, which is great because if you're anything like me, you'll get lots of different flavour of teas in a box and not know which is which. It also keeps each bag super fresh!

I also like the fact that there is no staple in this bag - they've used a little knot to secure the 'dipping' string to the tea bag itself and the little tag at the end says 'detox'

Pricewise I think these are more expensive than many herbal teas (RRP £2.29 from the ecogreenstore) but on balance, an on offer price of £1.95 comes in at less than 10 a brew.

Ingredients: aniseed, fennel seed, cardamom seed, liquorice root, coriander seed and celery seed.

Right then. Is it any good?

As I sat here starting to write the review and wait for my tea to brew (it says 5 minutes for infusion) I thought there was a smell on my desk. Had my teenage son been in and left an unfinished vegetable samosa around? No. It was the smell coming from my cup. My nose turned and my stomach churned. What a disappointment. Now at this point I would have simply thrown it but I thought I would see it out as I had started the review.

I took a sip and it actually tasted nearly as bad as the smell, though not quite. However, the aftertaste of gentle liquorice root saved it really. I have just gotten to the bottom of the cup and although I felt like gagging at the start of it, it's not quite so bad now. It IS a detox drink and for that I feel I should have it (a bit like medicine) for my health but to be honest, there are other ways of detoxing and I really will not be buying this again.

But please remember, we all have different tastes and you may like this yourself. Personally, it tastes a bit like I expect sucking a dirty dishcloth would taste like.
